Computerization and Pipe Inspection

WD Averitt New Tech Systems USA

Back in the 1980’s adding a computer to capture flaw and wall data and control various functions of a pipe inspection process began to gain acceptance in the OCTG industry. We started referring to these systems as “computerized” and labeling them as such. By adding the computer to the data-acquisition process, there were several added benefits:

Appearance – with the world becoming more computerized, it showed that the pipe inspection in-dustry was following suit

Data Retrieval – by enabling an operator to quickly post data for review by clicking a button as op-posed to unrolling miles of chart paper to find a specific joint, this benefit was well received

Cost – I recall one customer running an older model system say that as much as 80% of their down-time and repair cost was “chart deck related.” The fact that the standard PC (notebook or desktop) has proven to hold up very well in the field with minimal upkeep, it is also very in-expensive to replace and needs no special chart-paper or ink to operate

While there are other benefits to adding a computer to a typical pipe inspection process (processing speed, the ability to computer generate inspection reports, etc.), there has actually been very little use of the computers “power” or functionality. We are seeing a RAPID change in that fact now. As a manufacturer of pipe inspection systems, we have the good fortune to work with many of our customers to interface pipe inspection systems with the customer’s unique type of operation. We are finding a great deal of focus now being placed on not only improving and enhancing the above 3 items, but also (and sometimes more specifically) improving the data management and operational efficiency. This is ALL being accomplished by utilizing “readily available” 3rd party computer software and hardware. Example (1): Whereas the typical method of acquiring tube or joint serial numbers or run numbers and end-area inspection results were for a man to read the numbers off of each tube, write the numbers down, and retype the numbers into a spreadsheet type report – now many customers are simply typ-ing the numbers into a palm-pilot or hand-held PC and transferring the data to the run sheet at the touch of a button. This latter method is faster, easier, cleaner, and more accurate. Example (2): Where as the typical method of recording and entering UT body-wall readings is much the same as the serial numbers in EX (1), inspectors are now using UT compression-wave units with built-in data-loggers that upload the recorded data in the same fashion with the simple touch of a transfer button. There are many other areas where these same improvements and utilization of computers are occur-ring. For instance: companies are now moving to automatically measure and record tool joint OD readings (for downgrade as well as for tracking wear patterns), map full-length ultrasonic wall-thickness readings (also for tracking loss), capture hi-resolution images to enhance the inspection process, etc. These types of computerized processing as well as PLC (programmable logic control) op-erated pipe movement and loadings integrations, are proving to be very beneficial to the inspection companies.

Computerization and Pipe Inspection (continued) While the larger pipe handling companies have actually created departments to implement computerization and data-management into all phases of their operations (called IT groups – information technology) in their facilities, there is a similar approach to mobile operations in the yard or on the rig. Handheld devices made for hostile environments are available and easily interfaced with a standard computer. These devices can be used IN THE FIELD to: measure tool-joint OD’s, tally pipe with an inexpensive laser device, record premium, class II, reject data, etc., record rotary-shoulder dimensional data, etc. By using the computer and taking advantage of peripheral software and hardware the industry is finally moving into a truly “computerized” operation. The companies with the most success in these endeavors are those that focus on how they can implement these changes rather than why they cannot do so. So now the benefits to computerizing are:

Appearance Data-Retrieval Cost Data-management - for tracking wear patterns, tube life, machining events, etc. Speed - computerization routinely improves time spent on mundane tasks Accuracy – computerization eliminates the entry of incorrect data that often occurs in a

manual data-entry process Labor savings – computerization of many inspection functions, including pipe movement

systems, can drastically reduce the need for dedicated personnel. In addition, these systems always pass drug tests!

In summary, a highly computerized pipe inspection industry is fast approaching us. It will be quality driven and, most importantly, it will be economically driven.◄
