  • The Southern African Plastics Recyclers Organisation (SAPRO) announced the winners of the 2013 Best Recycled Product of the

Year Award at a gala dinner held in Irene, Pretoria.

This annual competition is hosted in collaboration with and forms one of the highlights of the local plastic industrys

Clean-Up South Africa Week - an initiative that encourages South Africans to clean-up and recycle where they work, live or

play. The Oscars of the Plastics Industry acknowledges recycled plastics products and encourages brand owners and industri-

al designers to consider recycled plastics as a material of choice.

The winner of the 2013 SAPRO Trophy for the Best Recycled Product was the Sunlight Dishwashing Bottle from Unilever SA.

Recycled material for the Sunlight bottle is supplied by Extrupet.

The bottles are injection stretch blow moulded

    by Nampak Petpak in Isando.

  • The retailer was motivated to implement this on-pack recycling label process as previous packaging material

information was designed to assist waste collectors and separators not the consumer.

Our shoppers were complaining that some of the packaging material is not recyclable because of the

labelling being used (which was not a recyclability use but a material identifier.) says Kiril Dimitrov,

Woolworths Foods Head of Packaging Procurement and Technical Services.

The aim is for this design to become the adopted standard for all packaging in South Africa. It is currently

supported by , PACSA (the Packaging Council of SA), Paper Recycling Association of SA, SAPRO

(South African Plastics Recycling Organisation), Collect-a-Can, The Glass Recycling Company, PETCO,

POLYCO, Wasteman and Wasteplan. To progress the adoption process, they require nationwide support

from the manufacturing and retail sectors as well as local and national government and municipalities.

The new label provides clear advice to customers on how they can recycle.

MATERIAL SOURCEIndicates which sustainable materials are used in each part of the packaging.

PACKAGING COMPONENTThe specific part of the package referenced by the label.

  • Woolworths

    recently initiated

    and introduced

    a new on-pack

    recycling label to

    inform customers

    how to dispose

    of the various

    components of

    the packaging in

    a responsible way

    and encourage

    them to recycle

    more of the

    packaging. The

    initial roll-out took

    place in October

    and they hope

    to have the label

    on most of their

    packaging in the

    near future.

  • According to Manjary Subiah The most exciting part of being exposed to

an international exhibition such as the K Show, means that has

    the exposure to the latest technologies in the plastics and rubber domain;

something which is vitally important for our primary purpose of training

the industrys future Plastics and Rubber practitioners. We also had the

opportunity to network with role players of international brands as well as

promote the training cause of . As such, we are indebted to

companies such as Arburg, Hestico, Leister, and Plastiweld for their firm

    support of .

Isaya Mtshweni commented that the opportunity to attend the 2013

K fair was a once in a life time experience. I met world manufacturers of

machines that are used in SA. The level of technology in Germany is very

high and everything is well organised in terms of quality, maintenance,

safety, recycling and production systems. It is important for us to benchmark

    ourselves against such standards.

The Thermoplastic Welding Inspection Programme (Non-NQF) provides an

excellent overview for everyone in the plastics fabrication industry. The pro-

gramme focuses on plastics as a material of choice and various fabrication

methods such as butt welding, socket fusion, electro-fusion, hot air, hot air

extrusion and solvent welding, with the main focus being on the inspection

    of plastics fabrication welded joints.

    is proud to welcome

    Grant Crosby-Emery as the new

technical trainer for the Western and

    Eastern Cape regions.

    Grant is based at the

    Maitland offices in

    Cape Town.

Born in England, Grant left with his family for the warmer

temperatures of SA, at a young age. After qualifying as a

chef, Grants foray into the plastics industry began as a setter

with Bichler Industries on extrusion and injection moulding

machines, until he was sent to Japan for PET setter training.

During his 13 years at Hilfort Plastics, Grant was responsible

for in-house training of their setters.

He is keen to pass on some of this manufacturing and

mechanical knowledge to learners. We look forward to many

more years of successful training and development from

Grant and the Western Cape Team.

Grant is married with a son and enjoys radio controlled

aircraft and motorcycling in his spare time.
