The land and the experiences of this region are the product of the unwillingness to surrender to time and nature itself! 75 million years ago, the dinosaurs roamed this region in abun-dance. Fast forward to the present, and we live in a wealth of amazing opportunities, events and attractions.
A visit to the Region of Newell reveals many lakes, waterways and habitats that will thrill even the most seasoned outdoorsmen. The profusion of walleye & northern pike, make the lakes and reservoirs in the region a fine place to retreat for some quality nature time. The abundance of water in the Region of New-ell supports incredible campgrounds and loca-tions for some of the most unlikely sports in Alberta. Consider wind surfing or sailing. The size of the lakes are ideal and are some of the least crowded in southern Alberta for you to enjoy any water sport you like!
Water can be said to be the master architect of the region. When the dinosaurs disappeared, the giant inland sea that once claimed this land flowed out, and in its path created the
UNESCO World Heritage site, Dinosaur Provin-cial Park. In this wonderland, the earth seems to melt away from your feet creating a spec-tacular panorama. Dinosaur fossils are still be-ing excavated from this prehistoric treasure chest. Imagine the opportunity to unearth a dinosaur with the palaeontologists at the park! If you’re not interested in unearthing a dinosaur, how about exploring the hoodoos; strange land formations seemingly created by a master sculptor!
A picture is worth a thousand words. Capture that picture with your own eyes.
The Region of Newell has an array of camp-grounds and outdoor recreation spots for idyllic outings with family or friends. The most iconic of these places is Kinbrook Island Pro-vincial Park, located next to the largest man-made lake in Alberta. Lake Newell, designed for agricultural water supply, has resulted in one of the best walleye and northern pike fisheries. Lake Newell boasts strong winds for sailing and lots of space for water sports like waterskiing and tubing!

In addition to eerily beautiful scenery, Dinosaur Provincial Park has some extremely important fossil discoveries. The park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heri-tage Site for its rich fossil resource, extensive badlands and riparian (river side) habitats.
