Will you be a foster parent for a child in need?

Who Can You Help?

Why Do We Need You?

At the heartbreaking age of two, young Noah was alone, without a family to love and protect him. Luckily, Noah was placed into our foster care system and found a family that changed his entire life. As a result of the trauma and neglect he experienced in his early days of infancy,

Noah struggled in his relationships with others and had significant developmental delays. But with the ongoing support from his foster

parents and the BGCC Foster Care team, Noah has now found a preschool program tailored to his needs. He has made significant

gains in his communication skills and he has now begun to develop new relationships with both his peers and other healthy adults in his

life. Thanks to the support and love his foster family has given Noah, he has grown into a happy, curious and affectionate child.

Children like Noah need people like you to help change their stories. You can provide a vulnerable child or youth the chance for a brighter

future filled with love, support and opportunities.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had some time to relax and enjoy friends and family over the holidays.

I wanted to send a shout out to all the neighbours who deco-rated their homes and businesses. The lights make the com-munity very festive! I also want to acknowledge the Business Improvement Association (formerly BRZ) for the great job decorating the trees in Montgomery Town Square! What a great addition to the community. Maybe next year we should have a contest?

I want to address Shouldice Park Unofficial Off Leash area.

Just for some context, Shouldice Park is designated an ath-letic park. Shouldice Park is named after James Shouldice, an early pioneer who donated the land to The City on the condi-tion of it becoming a park. James and his wife, originally from Ontario, settled in the Gleichen area before moving their 470-acre farm west of Calgary. The farm was first known as Shoul-dice Terrace then as Montgomery. The land sat untouched for 40 years after James’ death in 1925 until being developed into a park in the late 1960s (City of Calgary website).

The area on the south west corner, formerly a trailer park, has grown into a well-used unofficial off-leash area for dog own-ers from all over the City and for professional dog walkers. This area has been highlighted through pictures of Candy Cane Lane on previous newsletter covers.

The City has identified this area as a “missing link” in the Path-way system. Currently, the pathway ends after going under the 16th Avenue bridge then picks up again along the east-ern side of privately owned homes. The City began preparing the site for the construction of the pathway when area uses raised concerns.

Prior to the election, Ward Sutherland met with dog owners at Shouldice Park and again at the Community Centre. Ward had asked for a small group of spokespeople to come forward to work with the City on issues and concerns from the larger group. Concerns regarding cutting down of trees, continued off leash access to the river, possible negative interaction be-tween off leash dogs and pathway users (particularly cyclists), and the destruction of natural habitat for coyotes and birds were raised. There was a request to review different, more natural, material for use on the pathway. Many of the dog owners have requested that nothing change in the area.

City staff took the information and questions from the group. After the election, the group was invited to City Hall to meet with the City team and Druh Farrell’s staff to review the changes proposed. These responses included a natural area and habitat study, a separation of bike and pedestrian path-ways to mitigate dog/cycle conflicts, a move of the pathway to follow the current natural path, and a small fence on the

south side of the cycle track so dogs would be less likely to ac-cidently conflict with a cyclist. In the natural area and habitat review, the City noted that there was no natural vegetation in the area, further, the designed pathway would not be disrup-tive to animal habitat. The City staff explained that asphalt is the only material that is approved for the pathway as per the accessibility guidelines. The City is not looking at enforcing the on-leash rule of the area and are not looking at stopping people from using the area as an unofficial off-leash site. The construction will likely be completed this spring.

Following the meeting, the group has requested that Mont-gomery Community Association (MCA) work with the City to determine if the area should be designated an “Off Leash” area. The group has presented a petition to the MCA for con-sideration. We will review the request and work with the area users and the City to determine next steps.

I am presenting this information because I think it is impor-tant to note a few things:

• Ifyouareconcernedaboutsomethinghappeninginthecommunity, voice your concerns to MCA and the City.

• InmyexperiencewiththeCity,ourvoicesdomakeadif-ference! Although we don’t always get everything we may want, City staff have proven to be willing to explore and look to work with community members.

• Beclearwhatweaskforandunderstandthattheremaybe someone just as passionate pushing for the exact op-posite.

• Wecanengageinproblemsolvingandcompromise.

Sometimes passion trumps decency and respect. This area is special because of the people who use it; it would be a shame if in the process of trying to “save” the space, the kindness that makes it special is lost.

I will keep you posted as we move forward with this.

South Shaganappi Area Strategic Planning Group

The South Shaganappi Area Strategic Planning Group is a group of community representatives and stakeholders that meet on a monthly basis to inform and respond to a number of institutional and infrastructure development projects in the area.

SSASPG was given a presentation by Vecova on their strategy for their new development plan. Vecova pro-vides wellness, living support, employment, research and social enterprise to 35,000 individuals, young and old, who are living with a disability. The new proposal is based on an anticipated growth of 50%. Vecova’s existing structure involves two leases. The bottle de-pot leases its facility from the province while the main building has a lease agreement with the City of Calgary. It is Vecova’s goal to align these agreements under their new plan. On November 30, 2017 the Calgary Cancer Project re-ceived approval for its new facility from the Calgary Planning Commission. Over the next six months piling and shoring will continue on the site in preparation for thefoundationsinthespringof2018.

The City of Calgary announced that the 16th Avenue/29th intersection is approximately 90% com-plete. As construction operations have ended for the winter season, the last of the paving will be completed inthespringof2018.ThetrafficcircleonUxbridgeDriveNW is approximately 50% completed and will be grav-eled for the remainder of the winter.

The City of Calgary confirmed that as a result of the lat-est budget there will not be any service reductions to Calgary Transit in the northwest quadrant of the City.

West Campus Development Trust, while scaling back on construction on the University District for the winter season, anticipates that Save On Foods will be breaking groundinJanuaryof2018.
