From the Commander

Cdr Paul Austin, P

With boating season starting up for most of us there is reason to look at something a lot of boaters seem to ignore; wearing life jackets on the water. I was looking for a subject that would be good for an article in the May issue of the Bellviews and I realized that for most people in the northwest, boating season starts in May and runs through the summer months. With the waters on Lake Wash-ington and the Puget Sound we all have to realize that we are only moments

away from adversity when we are boating,

For me, I can’t emphasize how hard it is to wear a life jacket when on the water. It is uncomfortable, and espe-cially on a warm day, it’s confining. Unfortunately, it would be a pretty lousy excuse if I fell overboard or had a boating emergency and ended up in the water. I’m sure I would be thinking how stupid I was, regrettably it could be too late.

Here are a few items to know from the US Coast Guard resource center:

• Certain life jackets are designed to keep your head above water and help you remain in a position which permits proper breathing.

• To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person aboard. Boats 16 feet and over must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well.

• All states have regulations regarding children wearing a life jacket.

• Adult-sized life jackets will not work for children. Special life jackets are available. To work correctly, a life jacket must be worn, fit snugly, and not allow the child’s chin or ears to slip through.

• Life jackets should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once each year. Waterlogged, faded, or leaky jackets should be discarded.

• Life jackets must be properly stowed.

• A life jacket — especially a snug-fitting flotation coat or deck-suit style — can help you survive in cold water.

When Do Life Jackets save Lives?

When capsized in rough water. When sinking in unexpectedly heavy sea conditions.

When thrown from the boat as a result of a collision.

When injured by rocks or submerged objects.

When unconscious from carbon monoxide fumes. When tossed into freezing water.

When thrown off balance while fishing.

When unable to swim because of heavy or waterlogged clothing.

I know for me I will make it my goal to wear a life jacket whenever I’m on the water in 2014.

See you at the Change of Watch on 7 May 2014.

From the Squadron Education Officer

Lt/C Robert Cooper, P

PersPectiveI received the following editorial and thought it very applicable to our squadron’s situation. We have a very large “senior” member-ship and being aware of these safety items just may save a life or prevent injury.

A Harbour News Editorial: Published April 2014

Even though thousands of Power Squadron and Auxiliary members around the country support the efforts of senior boaters safety education, many in leadership positions have failed in basic boating safety responsibility and dismissed this most important issue, aging boaters safety awareness. Although this newly disclosed information has been described as a real “wake-up call” for aging boaters, many in leadership positions are still fast asleep!

Recent research well documents that the traits and conditions of human aging can have a severe impact on boating safety if left unchecked. These traits and conditions were recently confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Board.

Dozens of articles in leading boating media outlets, magazines and Squadron or Flotilla Newsletters have focused their information on the handbook and guide for aging boat-ers “The Book for Senior Boaters” where this information was first spelled out in detail, back in 2011.

IT IS OUR OPINION that every recreational boater and every Auxiliary and Power Squadron member, should be familiar with this boating safety information about the safety risks associated with the human aging process.

More information on this subject is available on their web site - www.seniorboatersofamerica.com

eDucation neWsSeamanship class started on 15 April with 7 students registered. Classes are being taught at Lake Hills El-ementary with yours truly as the principal instructor. We have over 13 students enrolled in the 10 May 2014 ABC class with Lt Bruce Gardiner, AP, as the coordinator / team leader for the class. Upcoming seminars in May / June include Anchoring (14 May 2014), Mariners Compass (21 May 2014) and Boat Handling Under Power (14 June 2014). We also have two Practical On the Water (POTW) classes that will be conducted with exact dates yet to be determined.

At this time of year we are selecting the candidate for the Chapman Award. I welcome any and all nomina-tions. Please forward me ([email protected]) the names of individuals that you consider worthy of national recognition.

reminDerDon’t forget Sea Skills (10 May 2014 at Shilshole Marina). This is a chance to mingle with other squadrons and take in a few very informative boating skills demonstrations.

Sticks and Strings

Lt/C Barbara Erickson, JN

Sticks and Strings was organized last year in Poulsbo at the D/16 rendezvous. P/C Debbie Harden, P, from Olympia Squadron suggested the name. The sticks represent the needles/hooks used for knitting as well as the mast and hooks used on our

boats. Strings reference the yarn/threads for knitting and also represent the lines on our boats.

D / 1 6 knitters from each squadron signed up to knit blocks for a 100-year Anniversary Afghan. P/D/C Barbara Erickson, JN, represented Bellevue Squadron by knitting several blocks. The completed afghan was on display at both the Fall and Spring Conferences and is a whopping 86" x 71", machine washable, and con-sists of 50 patterns repeated once in red and once in white.

Tickets are being sold by each squadron for the drawing to be held at the D/16 Rendezvous in Poulsbo this June. Barbara has tickets for $1.00 each and individuals need not be present to win. The back of the ticket must be completed so the winner may be contacted.

Pictures of the afghan have been posted on the website Smug Mug which hosts many of the district’s photos. Go to http://usps-d16.smugmug.com/ for excellent views of this lovely afghan. It could be yours to curl up under, with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, during those chilly days/evenings on the water.

All knitters are encouraged to join the group. The next meeting will be during the D/16 Rendezvous in Poulsbo on Saturday, 21 June in the Marine Room at the Sons of Norway between 1030 and 1230. Bring your current project along to work on and enjoy visiting with other knitters and D/16 members.

Our next project is with Christmas House. This organization is located in Everett and serves Snohomish County by providing an opportunity for qualifying, low income parents to come to their facility and “shop” for free holiday gifts for their kids (infant to 18 years of age). We will be supporting their holiday season with gifts of fingerless gloves, hats and scarves or anything else depending on your area of expertise.

From The Sea Belles President

D/Lt Laurel Redecker, AP

This is my final column as Sea Belles President! It’s so hard to believe how quickly this last year has gone. Our Change of Watch is on Wednesday, 21 May, at the Issaquah Elks. Their chef prepares a wonderful Prime Rib dinner and all the fixings! We’d love to have you join us for this special event! Check our flyer for all the details.

This is the time to say “Thank you” to all the people who have made this year so successful! I have so appreci-ated each and every one of you! Karl and VP Dortha Lang have graciously opened their home for our monthly open board meetings. Past President Jan Brintnall made sure the tables were set at squadron dinner meetings, and always had volunteers to do the center-pieces. As well as having kept me on my toes and being a wonder-ful adviser, Barbara Erickson was kind enough to take on the Secretary job part way through the year, as well as make up flyers and take reservations for our events. Marge Dippie has aced the job as Treasurer once again. Marie Van Cleave has taken care of Membership as well as contributing her knowledge as a long time Sea Belle. Diane and Mike Heinrich once more put on a wonderful Crab Feed. Pat Dorratcague chaired the lovely Holiday Gala. John Worl and Karl Lang contributed so much to meet-ings as Members-at-Large. Willa Conrad was so helpful in answering my questions. All who attended our meetings and shared their thoughts and ideas are why Sea Belles works, and I couldn’t have made it through the year without you!

I mentioned last month I was going through our albums from way back to pick out some pictures for our website page. Here are a few I want to share with you. See if you know who these people are: I call it a “Blast from the Past!”

Join us for a cup of coffee ... and a second opinion.During volatile and confusing markets, we understand that even the most patient investors may come to question the wisdom of the investment plan they’ve been following. We’d like to help – and we can start by offering a cup of coffee and a second opinion.

By appointment, you’re welcome to come in and talk with us about your investment portfolio. If we think your investments continue to be well-suited to your long-term goals — in spite of the current market turmoil — we’ll gladly tell you so, and send you on your way. If, on the other hand, we think some of your investments no longer fit with your goals, we’ll explain why, in plain English. And, if you like, we’ll recommend some alternatives.

Either way, the coffee is on us. For a free consultation, please contact us and let us know if you prefer milk or cream.

United States Power Squadron SeaSkills Events

The United States Power Squadron is presenting SeaSkills throughout the northwest waters. SeaSkills com-bines the fun of a weekend boating rendezvous with interactive training in all aspects of boating. Originally conceived in Seattle as a means of boosting new member involvement and confidence, now in its third year, SeaSkills has spread to USPS throughout the Puget Sound and Portland, Oregon. Some squadrons are open-ing up the Seaskills event to the public while others are allowing guests of members.

Popular topics have included crabbing, engine maintenance, electrical troubleshooting, man overboard drills, emergency signaling (flares), cruise planning, docking tools, or public on the water training. Some of the pre-sentations/training count toward power squadron certifications. Like any other rendezvous, presenters typi-cally bring their boats in to a shared dock on Friday afternoon/evening and share an informal meal.

On Saturday, they turn their boats into classrooms/props for their presentations, which typically last 45–50 minutes with a few minutes in-between. Most offer their presentation more than once during the day so those who want to attend more than one seminar scheduled at the same time can take one first, then the other when it’s offered again later. Schedules and maps to boats are generally available at registration throughout the day. Each boat holds a placard identifying the boat, presentation and times offered. Lunch is generally available about mid-day and some squadrons are offering an option for dinner and social events Saturday evening. Some squadrons will have door prizes or a fundraiser such as a raffle with prizes awarded after the presenta-tions.

For more information, contact your local United States Power Squadron, coordinator Lt/C Gregg Longstaff, AP, at [email protected] or one of the participating squadrons listed below.

Bridge

aDministrative officerThis position requires that one oversee the Administrative Department, which includes dinner meeting reservations and programs, the publication of the squadron newsletter, the Bellviews, the squadron directory, Who's Who, and the website at www.bellevuepowersquadron.org. Our annual fun-draising auction and boating activities and rendezvous fall under the Administrative Department as well. The ideal can-didate should be very familiar with the squadron operations, but the “old guard” will be very willing to advise in any area. It is not the job of the Administrative Officer to perform all of the functions, but to secure and supervise volunteers in those areas. Many of the jobs within the Admin Department are currently being capably handled. The traditional progres-sion is that the Administrative Officer may be nominated the following year as Executive Officer, and, following this, may be nominated to be Commander. However, it is dependent upon job performance each year and, if the person doesn't want to progress, it is not required.
