ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

The Grand Finals get karting enthusiasts’ pulses racing all around the world. Pure adrenaline, maximum driving fun and a chance to compete with the best are the success criteria for the karting event of the year. Anyone who gets a place on the winners’ rostrum here stands a good chance of breaking into the elite classes of motorsports! All drivers take part in the course with the same racing equipment. With the Grand Finals, it’s not the material that determines a win or defeat, but the driver’s skill, nerves and strategy – and of course a little bit of luck is needed too.

I am delighted to welcome 360 drivers from more than 50 nations to Portimao this year. At Rotax we have worked very hard this year to further improve quality and get the performance levels of our engines even closer together. We are convinced to offer the world’s best platform to compete in motorsport – and Ladies and Gentlemen: We intend to stay on top for many years! As much as we strive for continuity and stability in products we are well-known for – we hope, our ambassodor Ferdinand Habsburg and I are not destracting you from winning in your

Rotax class by introducing a new Kart product driving a show race – stay tuned...I would like to particularly thank our drivers, teams, partners and employees who make the Rotax MAX Challenge a unique experience with their enthusiasm, commitment and passion.I wish all the participants the top driving enjoyment and determination to win. ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

We are proud to welcome about 360 drivers from approximately 60 countries around the world, to one of Europe’s largest kart tracks that can operate three tracks simultaneously. The circuit is a great venue for the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals, as it is one of the most challenging circuits in the world. No wonder we are hosting the final races of the world’s biggest kart racing series that takes place from November 4 to 11, 2017 for the third time after 2015 and 2012.

It is a great opportunity for us to present our region that is recognized as a tourism destination – counting on mild temperatures during almost all the year, with a stunning coastline and where beaches are on the list of best in the world – this area is also recognized for sports events. Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is famous as a race and test circuit for cars and motorcycles. For example Superbike races, Le Mans Series, Blancpain GT Series,

and others. On the other hand, our circuits are often chosen to host International presentations of new cars, motorbikes and tyres to journalists and clients. As you can see, you are in the best company at our track. For the final races of your karting season we wish all of you a great time here, a fair and successful competition and a pleasant stay in Portimão. Good Luck!

Thanks to an agreement with Cram Motorsport, single-seaters in works Praga livery will also take part in the next Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. A prestigious partnership that adds another element to the value chain of an organisation that, beginning with the preparatory kart classes, is able to cha-perone the progression of its drivers, step by step, in motorsport.

“Project”. This has always been the key word behind decisions made by Praga. A brand with a history spanning more than a century, but which looks to the future with a continuous

desire to improve and add important elements to continue its winning ways.

If, on the one hand, the aim of the new Rotax Junior Sport class, a result of cooperation between Praga and Rotax, is to provide youngsters with new opportunities to get closer to motorsport, the partnership with Cram provides a natural entry point to the world of single-seaters for drivers who, having been brought up with team Praga, are looking for a way to continue to nurture their talent during their professional development.

Vroom together with Officine in Progress, Kart-Shop Italia and DR Racing have carried out an amazing test: 50 hours on the track with a karting engine without ever touching the seals. The protagonist of this test, first of its kind, is the Rotax FR 125 MAX Evo used for the Rotax single-brand event. Words: M. Voltini – Pics: D.Paolicelli

9GASETTE 2017

Over 4 turns of the clock, twice the

time for the great Le Mans: this was our aim when we started our test where we hoped to do 50 hours with the same engine, without ever opening it, not even just to check. The protagonist for this nerve wrecking test – both mechanical and human – was the Rotax FR 125 MAX Evo. Nothing like this has ever been done before. An exclusive test, which is also very hard and probative, so, it has made us carry out this job at Arce in an arc of three seasons and this is something that has moreover allowed us to get interesting results also concerning atmospheric and environmental conditions. And this is thanks to Officine in Progress who accurately monitored all the test.

THREE SEASONS IN A TEST The 50-hour test lasted about twenty days stretching over three seasons: we started back in winter and finished when summer was upon us. During the test under

variable weather we discovered what owners of this type of engine have already know: carburetion doesn’t suffer much from the variable weather conditions, or I should say not as much as kart drivers from different classes usually do. Despite having gone from 9°C to 39°C environmental temperature, on test days during different seasons, it really wasn’t necessary to continue opening the carburettor to change the jets as in other classes. There are a couple of elements

that determine this: first thing, as far as carburetion is concerned, the Rotax Max isn’t a “very tight” engine, therefore it isn’t very sensitive to the weather conditions like other racing engines that are more “sqeueezed”;

furthermore, the latest version of the ECU mounted on the “Evo” has been well set and works wonderfully well in adjusting ignition to the various working conditions of the engine. We would like, at this point, to point out that such ECU is made by Dell’Orto.

The lads from OiP would have like to mount more sensors, especially the one for measuring pressure inside the combustion chamber. However, this was discarded because, as you’d

have to work on the cylinder head (first of all, it would have to be drilled), and this would have been too “invasive” on the mechanics, when our aim was to see what the Rotax Max was like “as it is”.

10 GASETTE 2017

ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

THE TESTER’S OPINION: AYRTON BECHERINI “Rotax needs no introduction, we all know their experience on the field and the quality of their products. However, in a racing world where the duration tests are carried out in litres of fuel, it’s quite a shock to accept a fifty-hour test challenge. I think that in the Rotax FR 125 MAX Evo nothing is left to chance, both in substance and in minor details, first of which is the position of the carburettor. The “all in one” (all to the right) decision helps, it makes it easier to mount and remove the same, and at the same time it means that tube length is minimum, this means less work load on the water pump (which is internal). The results, practically speaking, is that the engine with over fourty-five minutes wear, strained by turns with no rest, also with environ-ment temperatures at 40°C and asphalt at 70 °C during the hottest part of the day, never gave any sign of overheating. Water temperature values remained good and this confirms that they have done a great job on the thermal system and the material used has excellent metallurgic characteristics. The Rotax MAX passed the test with full marks, fifty hours racing and no break-age and surprisingly without any drop in performance felt either until after a good thirty hours of running. Then, as you can see in the detailed technical analysis, there was a drop, even if a small one, especially if compared to the number of hours it had been running, or rather the hundreds of litres of fuel used up. The piston/cylinder allowance couldn’t have remained unaltered, just as the efficiency of the main bearings. Often great reliability and strength is a compromise that works against performance, but in this case, the engine guarantees excellent performance, very competitive and nothing to fear from its rivals. Another surprise was the clutch: over the fifty hours I minced chains, pinions and crowns, while the Rotax clutch proved to be very strong indeed, never gave any sign of giving in or signs of problems caused by wear.” The sturdiness of the engine and the accessories of the same, and the tyres’ resistance to wear make this kart ideal for anyone wanting to race without spending a fortune; however, it’s also a kart that I would recommend to hobby drivers who love speed without the risk of having to spend more time in the garage than on the track.”

COMPRESSION ACCORDING TO KM COVERED On each test day, we checked engine compression both before starting to drive lap (purple line) and at the end of the day (grey bars). As you can see, after intensive use (time and km per test day are given just below) compression tends to diminish more. For “endurance” use, probably, the engine requires some particular attention. To be clear, the stress tests were carried out in the following way: 100-200 km for more days at the start of the test (simulation week of a typical race); 500-500 km in one day at the end of the test (endurance simulation).Furthermore, over the 50-hour test you can see how a first slight compression flexion is about at the 30th hour, then there’s another evident one at about the 45th hour, just before the end of the race.

We’d like to thank Daniele Parravano Daniele Parravano from Officine in Progress who had to take on the organising and operative phase over a 6 month transfer to the track. Nicola Becherini, Ayrton’s father who did his best to solve some problems encountered during test days. Mario Fini, track owner in Arce. Andrea Saccucci from Officine in Progress, despite working with Magneti Marelli for the F1 world championship he followed the evolution of the test from close to elaborating data that he got at the end of each test day and changing the data into graphs published in this column. Reto Carigiet and Marco Gelmini from KartShopItalia, Maria Teresa and Marco Rossi from DR Racing who supported us with spare parts and other products. A word also goes to the work group who worked hard to make sure this exclusive and meaningful project was a success. Maurizio Voltini (test co-ordinater), Antonio Pepe (public relations), Alessandro Roca (editorial staff), Fabina Gavillucci (secre-tary), Domenico Paolicelli (photographer), Lorenzo Moro (photographer), Ayrton Becherini (driver), Mattia Moscone (driver).

racing and companionship of all

participants and people here in

Portimao! STEFAN GRUBERAs new head of the Rotax karting business I want to give you a short insight into our plans for the future. One of my main goals is to be closer to our customers in order to understand their needs. This is the basis for providing them excellent Rotax racing experience over and over again. To reach this goal I have several steps in mind on which we are focusing already. One of the most important one for me and the Rotax karting team is the direct support at racing events worldwide and - as you may have seen - we are at the races already. Another essential point is that we will enforce a harmonization of regulations with local distributors and dealers which will make racing easier for all parties. Furthermore, we are working on improving the concepts of club level, national and international racing for next year to offer our customers “the best” Rotax MAX Challenge ever.We are aware of our customer’s demands to keep the high level of the long life for Rotax MAX engines, but also improving the

parity of the engine performance by assuring low cost running. That is why we are improving the Rotax MAX engine for a next level of racing coming up and have addressed exactly these issues. Our vision of the Rotax MAX engine series is for drivers to UNBOX THE ENGINE AND WIN RACES. This combined with the ease of use and an attractive racing series – our Rotax MAX Challenge – will lead the way to a successful future.Be assured that we, the Rotax team and myself, will keep pushing forward to provide you the best racing experience! In closing let me wish you a great time with thrilling races at the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in Portimao, may the best drivers win. ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

The Krone E-Mobility Play

Days is an event that brings together lots of different realities with only one common denominator: environmental sustainability. From

drones to e-bikes passing through Formula E, apex of e-racing. BRP-Rotax didn’t miss the opportunity to astonish the whole karting world once again, so they took this event as the

perfect stage to present their new product: the Rotax THUNDeR!What’s that? The Rotax THUNDeR powerpack is BRP-Rotax first step in this new technology designed for racing.

“We wanted to create something specifically for racing. There are few products for the rental sector on the market and we wanted to create something for racing drivers of the future,”

During the 2017 E-Mobility Play Days at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, BRP-Rotax presents its new joint venture and the first e-kart: the Rotax THUNDeR.

CLOSEUPROTAX THUNDeR: FUTURE OF KARTING

17GASETTE 2017

ROTAX THUNDeR: FUTURE OF KARTING

said Thomas Uhr, General Manager BRP-Rotax GmbH & Co KG and vice President Powertrain BRP.On a Sodikart Sigma DD2 specifically modified to host battery packs, they have put a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) that, combined with the latest high-performance lithium-ion 2.5 kWh battery has 20 kW maximum

power and maximum torque is 46 Nm. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and top speed is 130 km/h. Do you need more power? It’s not a problem for the Rotax THUNDeR since there’s a boost

button that pushes the engine to 24 kW max power thanks to a system similar to the one used in Formula E. Everything is in the driver’s hand: thanks to the 3.5 inch TFT touch screen display integrated in the steering wheel, the driver can monitor RPM, speed, battery level and a recovery system to activate boost.“I have raced in the Rotax MAX Challenge

for a couple of years, using normal combustion engines. Compared to 2-stroke engines, this Rotax THUNDeR gives you the power whenever you need it, there’s no lag. Besides, all the incredible

technical features it has also got a ‘boost button’…! It may seem stupid, but every driver wants a boost button! Having a button that allows you to go even faster is any child’s dream! It only lasts five seconds, so that makes you manage things carefully. One thing is sure, it’s heavier than a normal kart, but it’s really well balanced and it allows you use all the power. We’ve been testing it for a year, looking to every millimetre of the position of the battery packs, but now output is awesome. In wet condition it’s even better because it delivers power immediately, so you are faster round corners. Another thing that I love about Rotax THUNDeR is that it’s ready to use: when I was younger I needed a mechanic to help me to do almost anything, but now even a young kid can just jump in and race.” – this is Ferdinand Habsburg’s opinion on the Rotax THUNDeR, the 20-year old F.3 driver is one of the test drivers for the Rotax THUNDeR and a BRP-Rotax testimonial.

CHASSISAFFIRMATIONS

PARTNER What do you like most about the

Grand Finals? This is the biggest kart event in the world. It looks like the “Olympic” games of karting, this special event is unique ! NO other race can compare to the GF. For Sodikart factory, the challenge is interesting and allows us to show the quality and performance of Sodikart chassis all over the world.Which has been your best Grand

Finals so far? This is a difficult question. However I have preference fort the Grand Finals 2015 at Portimao. Why?Because it was the first time that Sodikart provided karts for 2 classes! It was a very big challenge for us. Just think,154 karts, 2000 hours of work at the factory to prepare 77 Sodi Sigma RS and 77 Sodi Sigma DD2. Ensure quality service for all the drivers in these 2 classes during the event was also a big challenge for us.Three things that you always have with you when you go to the Grand Finals? My iPad, to follow the races with live

timing, my sunglasses and my Rotax soft shell!Your favourite kart racing track is…?Sarno, ItalyWhy?Track layout, associated with this beautiful location in Italy. What is the most important personal quality a kart racer should bring with?Of course a kart racer has to be fast, has the ability to explain his feeling to let the team improve the kart and the set up, but moreover he has to be fair, he has to present the brand he is driving in the best way possible. And he should be fluent in English !

What do you like most about the Grand Finals?I like the organization of the race and the fact that we have 360 drivers enjoying karting at one big event. Which has been your best Grand Finals so far?Sarno (Italy) 2016.Why?Very nice atmosphere and timing, the end of October gives a higher probability of nice weather. Three things that you always have with you when you go to the Grand Finals? The best people who work for IPK (Praga), the best material

produced by IPK (Praga) and the best attitude which makes our service unique. Your favourite kart racing track is…?Again, Sarno. Why?A very fast circuit also with nice technical parts. What are the most important personal qualities that a karting driver should bring with him?The will to win, fair-play and respecting other competitors. We are in Portugal: Bacalhau or Pasteis?BacalhauWhere would you like to see one of the next Grand Finals? It would be nice to see the Grand Finals outside Europe from time to time.

What do you like most about the Grand Finals? The Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals is a very professional and nice event; very well organized. It is an important weekend where we can meet many new people who work in the karting world. It’s very nice to see drivers from all around the world compete with the same material and show their skill and potential, but also their ambition to win this important title.Which has been your best Grand Finals so far? To be honest we have always had a good time at every final that we have done….for sure the first in Al Ain was very nice as it was the first one supported by Birel. The location was

very nice and the climate too– but we also had a good time in Portimao, Valencia and Sarno. Three things that you always have with you when you go to the Grand Finals?Lot’s of spare parts, many business cards but no stop watch – because I’m sure we will win the race! Your favourite kart racing track is…? Al Ain.Why? Track infrastructure, weather and people. What is the most important personal quality a kart racer has to bring with? DeterminationWe are in Portugal: Bacalhau or Pasteis? BacalhauWhere would you like to see one of the next Grand Finals? South America could be a good option – for example Brasil where is now allowed to sell karts made in Europe or UAE.

ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

Racecom has been a major step in the development of the EMS. Introduced in 2017 just before the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals, it manages the entire communication and document flow between organizer, officials and drivers. It covers all standard tasks and offers an easy setup to meet additional needs.

EVA-EMS RACECOM

The web-based application covers

all the usual tasks of motorsport events, starting from an easy online registration up to final check-out. Participants can easily register, modify or cancel their entry from anywhere at any time using all kind of common devices like PC, tablets or smartphones, thus receiving a confirmation e-mail immediately with all the necessary documents attached. Racecom, infact, distributes and monitors messages (text, documents, forms) and signals to both – sender and receivers about the processing status in real time. It communicates with drivers by means of a smartphone app available for iOS and Android devices. The built-in PDF processor creates and/or populates free definable PDF forms and signs critical documents (such as bulletins, official result lists, steward decisions, …) with a legally valid digital signature. All occurrences, messages and documents are permanently logged and available for download at any time. The EMS is designed to work with all common barcode scanners on the market, but we strongly recommend a high quality

2D-Image Scanner to avoid problems and misreading. Latest developments on smart phone apps have proven that they are highly advanced and capable to scan as precise as industrial scanners. The EMS therefore offers an interface to one of the most powerful scan engines on the market. To log in, start your Internet Browser and visit www.evanet.at and press EMS. If it is the very first time you may be asked once for your device type, then enter your username and password and press SUBSCRIBE.On arriving at the track, a driver only needs his license and the preliminary identification barcode, received after filling in the entry form on EVA. A quick scan of this ID Code provides the operator at the race office all required information on the screen, nothing remains unnoticed. This procedure will create automatically the driver database. Finally the event starts and the drivers and their equipment can be inspected. One of the basic things is the difference between the participants and the driver database, since they are the

basis for all EMS-functions. The difference between a participant and a driver is, that the driver is actually racing at the event, while a participant has only subscribed to a series. A participant becomes a driver after he has successfully passed the race office. Proceeding to scrutineering and tyre hand-out, the barcode on engines, chassis, tyres and all kinds of optional seals allows a quick and accurate data collection of the driver’s equipment, all saved in a database. The BARCODE field is

the field where you must scan (or enter) the code coming from tyres, engines, seals, cards, etc. Thanks to network connection of all the control stations to this database, it’s really easy to have full control over all the practices. Any data manipulation is impossible, we’re sorry for cheaters..!At the mandatory drivers meeting, each driver’s ID code is scanned, and this immediately shows the race director who is absent. From the start and throughout the event, EVA is omnipresent: in the pre-start area, in the servicing park, or at

any other checkpoint. All components are continuously checked in real time for correct ownership and validity. Not only EVA-EMS Racecom System saves time for drivers and organizers, but, even more important, it is a virtual tool to improve security and safety. In fact, the systems offers useful functions and import and export tools for security personnel and a number of professionals like time-keepers, commentators, members of the media and web-designers.

The EVA-EMS Racecom System is open for all series. Anyone who is interested, can apply for an access license from BRP-Rotax. Contact and other details can be found on www.evanet.at

KARTODROMO INTERNACIONAL DO ALGARVE

2010, the circuit is renowned for its large and modern facilities. The 1.6 km layout boasts a very smooth surface, very fast 400 m long straight with speeds of up to 145 km/h and full acceleration of approx. 12 seconds and with plenty of overtaking opportunities.Let us take you through a lap of the circuit, corner by corner and everything in between!!

START The main straight is approximately 400 meters in length, with a slight kink to the right at around the 200 meter mark. This is taken under full acceleration all the way to the end and into the heavy braking zone. The slipstreaming effect along the straights is extremely important for a good lap time and overtaking opportunity at the end of the straight.

CORNER 1Corner 1 is a 90° right hander, which requires a tight exit, allowing for good speed along the short straight and the approach to corner 2.

CORNER 2Corner 2 is a 90° left hander which is fast and flowing in the middle of the corner and then a wide exit before heading downhill and into corner 3.

CORNER 3A sweeping type of corner which can be approached with full attack. A late braking approach, carrying good speed through the middle of the corner, and maintaining that speed with a wide exit. The exit from corner 3 is uphill with a slight kink taken under full acceleration, followed by a late braking effort in corner 4.

CORNER 4Is a double apex

corner. Slightly wide of the apex on the initial turn in, then picking up the apex on the second part of the corner. No sliding as a good flow is required to carry speed through corner 5 (a full acceleration 90° right hander) and down to corner 6.

CORNER 6 Can be a difficult corner. A very fast corner that requires a slight lift is necessary to maintain good exit positioning and approach to corner 7.

CORNER 7The approach to corner 7 is with caution as getting it wrong opens the door for overtaking possibilities from your opposition. A wide turn in approach with a late braking effort is required. Corners 7 and 8 (corner 8 being a slow left hand 180° corner), are the slowest corners on the track and slightly uphill, so

a nice flow though these 2 corners is necessary to enable a good exit speed and fast approach to corner 9.

CORNER 9Corner 9 is a 90° right hand corner and uphill. A slight lift is an option as it allows an easier set-up and positioning of the

kart in the middle of the corner and then exit followed by the approach to corner 10.

CORNER 10Corner 10 is taken under full acceleration all the way through the corner and onto the main straight.

ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2017

A fter the Jetting APP released

last year to allow racers to find the basic set up for their carburetors, this year Rotax created a brand new APP to give participants to the 2017 Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in Portimao a better experience. The APP has all useful information for both spectators and drivers, and for latter is mandatory because it’s the only way that Stewards / Organization will communicate during the event. Driver / Entrant registration for Notifications in the APP. The registration process in NOTIFICATIONS is the only way to ensure a smooth communication flow with them. The APP is connected to the EVA-System (the system responsible for the overall

administrative race management), and it has two main steps:

Step 1 - Driver and entrant must register in the APP (with the same email address that was inserted into the EVA-System).

Step 2 - Driver and entrant must register in the notification area in order to receive the notifications. Driver has to insert his starting number, his name and surname according the participants list. In case of young drivers not having an own mobile parents or driver/entrant responsible may register as a driver. The same process is valid for the entrant. However, the entrant is able to insert as much drivers as he is responsible for. Supporters / mechanics can also

use the same steps like drivers and entrants. However they will not receive the notifications officially (notifications recognized by the EVA-System), although the information they are receiving will be the same.Notifications: If the stewards are sending a notification, driver and/or entrant will receive a message on their APP. The time the driver /entrant is reading the notification, the system will inform the Stewards that the message was read by the person responsible for the driver. This information will be registered in the EVA-System. Updates: The organization will send all important information related to the event to the drivers, entrants,

supporters and general public. Everybody that is registered will receive these updates. Users can choose if they want to receive the information related to all classes or just related to a certain class.Free WIFI internet access to Driver /EntrantDuring the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals there will be provided FREE WIFI internet access, from November 4 to 11, 2017 – in all paddock area – to all drivers and entrants. WIFI will be available in the paddock areas where drivers /entrant are allowed to use it; including the servicing park (for drivers, entrants and mechanics).

Get your APP via Apple APP Store or Google Play Store!

It’s everything in your hands.

This year the Rotax MAX
