Congratulations Congratulations to Denise McGrath for her nomination in the 2AD Courtesy Awards. “Denise never lets the pressure of work spoil her friendliness to students and parents” was the reason for her nomination. Well done, Denise!

2011 Armidale Outdoors Schools Orienteering Championships A group of five Armidale High students competed in the 2011 Armidale Outdoors Schools Orienteering Championships at Dumaresq Dam.

Felicity Barker-Smith came second on the 9-12 Girls Orange Course, but was faster than both Kieran Smith and Mitchell Knox who came 1st and 2nd respectively on the 9-12 Boys Orange Course and Jackson Doak came 1st on the 7-8 Boys Orange Course. Torsten von Strokirch was 1st on the 7-8 Boys Green Course. Plan It Youth

Plan It Youth aims to provide all refugee children in Armidale with the opportunity to look at different career opportunities. This year the students involved, from Drummond, Armidale City and Armidale High, have heard a number of motivational speakers and had excursions to the Medical facilities at UNE and the Armidale and District Hospital. Armidale High students Makuach Maluach, Alawen Mamer and Narcisse Simba have been involved. Narcisse, shown here with her brother, Armand, would like to be a doctor. ‘I got an idea about what nursing would be like and saw many other different jobs at the hospital,’ she said. She found the excursions very interesting and would like to thank the people who organised them Future excursions to TAFE and the Tomato Farm are planned for next year.

All the excitement of the Fair. 8CU Science rose to the challenge of designing a science experiment which resulted in something spectacular with enthusiasm.

Laura Murray launches her water-filled soft-drink bottle which demonstrated the power of air pressure as it rose spectacularly above the gum-tree in the background, showering watchers with water. Eliza Hamilton’s lava lamp, Jayde Press’ and Tamika Calliess’ self-inflating balloon and Matt Turner’s demonstration of the effects of a statically charged balloon in repelling a drink-can was also impressive. Sorcha Harrop Sorcha has had an amazingly dramatic year; nominated for OnStage for her HSC Individual Project and now the recipient of one of three scholarships offered nationwide to the famous Bell Shakespeare Company in Sydney. Finding herself on a shortlist of only 12 students following face-to-face auditions with representatives from the Company, Sorcha chose to present a monologue as Phoebe from Shakespeare’s As You Like It in a filmed presentation which also required her to explain the artistic decisions she had made to construct the character. Her scholarship involves being flown to Sydney for a master class with John Bell and tickets to the Bell Shakespeare Company’s performances next year.

Zone Debating

Ben Hemmings is pictured here with the other members of the New England Debating Team which represented us in Sydney at the Annual Debating Camp. 2011 Armidale High P & C Report The Armidale High P & C has had two fundraising events this year - the Antique & Collectables Fair and Armidale High’s version of a Night at the Races. Both events were very successful with support from parents, staff and friends of Armidale High. The money raised from these events has gone towards the purchase of a coffee making machine for the Technology Department, a number of Aboriginal resources to support student learning, the repair of the sign at the bottom of Elm Drive and prizes for the Year 12 Valedictory and Presentation Night. One working bee was held in early spring and this saw tidying up at the front of the school and the weeding of a number of gardens. There is currently the opportunity to purchase a paver (or two) to have a lasting memory on the grounds and an order form is attached. It can also be obtained at the school office or the website [email protected]. The pavers will form part of our ongoing project – the outdoor learning area which is situated below the quad area. At the end of February 2012 we will once again hold our annual Antique & Collectables Fair, there a number of ways to get involved such as sitting at the door, working in the kitchen, making cakes and slices to sell, helping to set up and pack up, staying overnight, or just coming and having a look at all the beautiful items, small and large, for sale. Next year, the P&C will also run two social events and two working bees. Look forward to seeing as many people there as possible. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the various members of the P&C for their enthusiasm and assistance in variety of roles this year. If you would like to be a part of this great team please come along to the Armidale Bowling Club on the third Tuesday in the month @ 7pm. The next meeting will be in February.

On behalf of the P & C, we wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year season.

Sue Fisher (President) Trudie Laffan (Secretary)

Mark Keogh (Treasurer)

Virtual Worlds An out-of-this-world experience was enjoyed by sixteen students Year 9 from Armidale High School recently. In collaboration with DEHub, macICT and UNE, students were linked to Dulwich Hill High by national broadband. Together they created and controlled avatars in their virtual worlds. Students were thoroughly engaged in this great learning experience.
