the information given.

Based on data from the Health Research Association Indonesian Ministry of Health in

2010 there were approximately 35.6% of infants with protein energy malnutrition (PEM). One of

PEM diet therapy which has been implemented in Indonesia by giving modisco (Modified Diet

Skim Cotton Seed Oil). Modisco made from vegetable oil, skim milk, sugar, and water. However,

due to deficiency of proteins and enzymes, one of them is a protease enzyme resulting in

malabsorption of nutrients, then giving modisco with high protein composition was not able to

compensate for the lack of protein in PEM. Therefore, the active substance is needed to

maximize the absorption of proteins by the addition of bromelain from pineapple extract.

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks peptide bonds in proteins into amino acids that

help the absorption of protein. This case we've tested in experimental animals induced PEM, and

the results showed that the administration modisco and bromelain obtained values of albumin,

hemoglobin, and weight (an indicator of nutritional improvement PEM) is higher than single

modisco administration. Highest increase in PEM indicators obtained from a combination of

bromelain 7 mg and modisco 15g. Unfortunately, either formula or combination Modisco not

available in formulations that can directly be used by health workers. Therefore, our team makes

the formulation of modified Modisco and called Proteolin (Protein Absorbing Optimalized by

Bromelain). Thus, we expect this formula can be used as an alternative therapy to improve the

use of single Modisco for PEM in Indonesia and other developing countries.
