Starting off the quarter was our Annual Golf Outing – a great success, attracting the maximum number of players that the country club would allow for a shotgun start. Jack Swarbrick’s talk was, as always, entertaining and informative. Next the Fresh- men Send-Off attracted a large and impressive group of curious incoming freshmen and their parents, with Notre Dame Graduates from the 1960’s to 2011 attending to offer advice and thoughts for the “New Domers.” We greatly appreciated sponsorship from the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union for both events and thank them for their interest in and support of our Club. With football season upon us, the weekly Football Luncheons at the Skyline Club continue to draw crowds of dedicated fans of the Fightin’ Irish. I encourage you to attend at least one of the upcoming luncheons to meet and mingle with fellow Domers. The 37th Annual Notre Dame - Purdue Luncheon held at the Skyline Club was, as always, a success. A tailgate at the Purdue game was hosted by our Club and the Notre Dame Club of West Central Indiana, with both the Band of the Fighting Irish and the Fighting Irish Cheerleaders stopping by the party. We have heard from a couple of our Scholarship Winners, thanking us for helping them live their Notre Dame dream. One just completed an internship in Washington, D.C., and heads off to Ireland for the semester. The mother of one of the 2013 Winners emailed us the following about her newly enrolled daughter: “ She loves Notre Dame! She was assigned Cavanaugh Hall. The first thing she sees every morning out her window is the Golden Dome! Living a dream.... ” It is great to hear how we make a difference in the students’ lives. Our Club is now entering its busiest time of the year. Planning is well underway for the Scholarship Dinner, and we look forward to your participation by attending or donating an item for the silent auction (hopefully both) so that our Club can continue to help the students as much as possible. The Dinner is one of our three largest events of the year, and net proceeds go to our scholarship fund. The Club’s tailgate was for the Oklahoma game and as usual was a great event. Next a bus trip is scheduled for the USC game, which will include donuts and coffee for the trip up and a small tailgate upon arrival at campus. I have taken the bus trip in prior years and met many alumni. The trip is fun, and it sure beats the long drive home down US 31 and all of its construction, especially after a night game. The Young Alumni continue to impress with their organization of the game watches. I attended the Michigan game watch and the crowd was huge and enthusiastic. Again, if you have a chance, take in a game watch or two. The Irish basketball team will be in town in December to play in the Crossroads Classic at the Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. We do not yet know how we will be involved, but we will advise you when we know. In any event, we must show up in force so that the Irish are not overshadowed in the stands by Bulldog, Boilermaker, and Hoosier fans! I am pleased to announce that after a one year absence the Hesburgh Lecture series is returning. After the lecture please join us for a social hour and optional dinner. Hesburgh Lecture Series 2013“Questions and problems continue to challenge us, and given the excellence of today’s faculty, it is a true blessing to have them stimulate and provoke thoughtful dialogue in your communities.” – Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., President Emeritus

Since 1986, the Hesburgh Lecture Series provides an opportunity to experience Notre Dame’s academic excellence to the Notre Dame clubs and their local communities. The lectures perpetuate the example of President Emeritus Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., as a lifelong learner, and further the mission of the Alumni Association by providing meaningful continuing education opportunities to Notre Dame Alumni, parents, and friends. Annually, approximately 6,000 alumni, parents, and friends attend Hesburgh Lectures.

From seven lectures in the first year, the portfolio of lecture topics has expanded to 210 lectures, presented by 103 faculty members on topics related to Arts/Architecture, Business/Economics, Catholicism/World Religions/Spirituality, Communications, Current Affairs, Education, environment, Ethics/Social Concerns, Family, Globalization/Intercultural, government/Law/Politics, Health, History, Human Behavior, Notre Dame, Science/Engineering, Sports, and Technology/Social Media.

The Club’s Hesburgh Lecture will be held on November 21, 2013, at 5:30 pm at Highland Country Club, 1050 W 52nd St, Indianapolis, IN 46228. The lecture will be presented by Prof. Richard A. Williams, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Sociology, University of Notre Dame. The topic is Census 2010: Challenges and Controversies: This lecture explains why the census is so important to government and business, and why others nonetheless claim that the census exceeds its constitutional mandate, invades privacy, handles race and ethnicity improperly, and even promotes gay marriages.

To reach other members of our Indianapolis community and share with them what Notre Dame is, the lecture will be held at the November meeting of the Estate Planning Council of Indianapolis, and all of our Club members and friends of Notre Dame are equally invited and encouraged to attend and put the Notre Dame Spirit on display. This combination has previously resulted in large crowds and enjoyable interaction. The lecture will be followed by a cash bar and an optional dinner ($35). Look for more information in the Club’s future emails and the Club’s webpage. If you have any questions, please contact David D. Deeter ’76 at [email protected].

Join us at Our 47th Annual Scholarship DinnerOn Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Notre Dame Club of Indianapolis will be hosting its cornerstone fundraising event – The 43rd Annual Notre Dame Scholarship Dinner. Over 100

guests are expected at the Skyline Club in downtown Indianapolis for a gourmet dinner and for evening activities including a Silent Auction and the announcement of our “Grand Raffle”

results! This event is the major focus of our fund raising efforts for fulfilling our commitment in support of the financial needs of area students attending the University.

For the 2013-14 academic year the Club is committed to providing a total of over $106,000 in scholarships to 34 area students. As large as this commitment may appear, it represents only a fraction of the total required to fully meet the existing shortfall in the needs of our area students. Your support by attending and participating in this event is both needed and greatly appreciated.

A registration form for the dinner is enclosed. Please fill out and return the bottom portion of the form to the Notre Dame Club of Indianapolis at P.O. Box 55501, Indianapolis, Indiana 46205 by November 1, 2013.

Excellence in Teaching ConferenceEvery year in the fall, the Notre Dame Alumni Association hosts the Excellence in Teaching Conference on campus. The conference strives to help bridge the gap between traditional teaching strategies and learning with new technologies. Educators from high school and grade school are invited for a weekend of personal reflection and professional renewal at the University. The award-winning conference is open to all teachers and administrators from public, Catholic, and private schools nationwide.

The Notre Dame Club of Indianapolis has perennially sponsored a teacher from the central Indiana area to attend the conference. Teachers are nominated by local alumni, Board members and schools in the area. Recent teachers sponsored by the Club have represented Cathedral High School, St. Charles Borromeo in Bloomington, Holy Angels Catholic School and Westlane Middle School.

This year’s conference is October 25–27, 2103, and the Club is pleased to be sponsoring another area teacher. This year the Club is sponsoring

LeAnn Parson from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. LeAnn joined the faculty there three years ago and teaches students in the 9th and 11th grades. While still new to the profession, LeAnn has become a leader in re-designing the English Writing Curriculum and Freshman English Scope and Sequence. LeAnn was also a member of the 2013 Brebeuf Colloquium Team that traveled to St. Louis for the Jesuit Secondary Education Association Colloquium. The Club is pleased to sponsor LeAnn and very proud of its continued representation at this annual conference on campus.

iNDy Club Football luncheonsIf you didn’t make it to our regular ND football luncheons last season at The Skyline Club on the 36th floor of the One America Building, plan to join us this season. We will meet each Thursday before all ND games except for the Stanford game (Wed. 11/27). It is STILL just $15 for the Skyline Club’s great buffet (includes soft drink, tax, and gratuity). We will make season predictions – $5 per prediction will go into the pot for the prizes. Luncheon founder, Vince Wagner will co-host the luncheons with me the year. And when both of us are traveling, Ann Marie Waldron will step up to the podium! Go Irish!

RSVP to me and pay at the luncheon —cash or check. See you there!

in the planning stages to add a new style of event. We hope to offer a weekend of events which include community service opportuni-ties and social gatherings in conjunction with a game watch. Watch our weekly emails and webpage for more information.

Other events in the planning stages, in-cluding community service projects and Networking night, will be announced in the Club’s emails and web page. This year’s nominee for the Notre Dame Excellence In Teaching Program is Ms. LeAnn Parson. Ms. Parson, a teacher at Brebeuf Jesuit, has both undergraduate and masters degrees from Notre Dame.

Finally, our Club is working to improve our communications by continuing our email blasts and keeping our webpage current. We will continue to have regular mailings, which are expensive, but we also hope to develop the website into a spot you can visit and keep abreast of all things Irish. Please visit our website at www.indy.undclub.org to read the latest news, to participate in polls, to use the message board to look for tickets and jobs, to view photographs of our members at events, to find details and sign up for upcoming events, and to find many links to Notre Dame related websites at your fingertips. If you have any thoughts our suggestions for the website, please pass them on to me.

Our members are the Club. So if you have not yet renewed you membership for the 2013 – 2014 year, please do so. I also ex-tend a hearty welcome to our new members who have joined our Club for the first time. As the Notre Dame Alumni Association encourages us to do, we hope that our Club can offer each of you educational, spiritual, and educational opportunities; but, you know, we also hope to offer you a chance just to have fun.

As always, GO IRISH!

Freshmen Sendoff a Great SuccessThe Freshmen Sendoff was held on July 19 at Holy Spirit at Geist Parish Hall. Fifteen incoming freshmen were able to attend with their parents and they were fed, educated, and entertained by Donna Cerabona ’11, who spoke to the whole group, and Dave Hennessey ’76 who spoke to the parents while the incoming frosh had an informal question and answer session with current students and several recent alumni. The

feedback from all who attended was that the evening was an unqualified success.

Many thanks go out to the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union who sponsored the event.

2013 Notre Dame Football Luncheon The 37th annual ND/Purdue Football Luncheon was the perfect way to kickoff the weekend when it was held Wednesday, September 11, at the Skyline Club in downtown Indianapolis. If you didn’t attend, you missed a great time! Our guest speakers—Hunter Smith and Jon Goldsberry—were very funny, with thoughtful remarks and reflections on their time on campus, the NFL and the competitive spirit between our two fine institutions. Our Master of Ceremonies was Tim Newton, the radio voice of Purdue football. The friendly rivalry is going strong after all these years and once again, the event put all of us in an anticipated mood for a great match up!

If you’ve never been to the luncheon, this is one of those events you should circle on your calendar for next year. Not many clubs have the respectful (yet competitive) relationship that we do with an intra-state rival. So this event is something special and you’ll want to be a part of it. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 38th annual luncheon on September 10th, 2014. Don’t miss out on the tradition!

The Boys and Girls of SummerNotre Dame Club Spring and Summer Softball Team

Several members of the club played co-ed softball this summer at Midwest Sports Complex. Club members participated in two 10-week “double-header leagues” on Monday evenings. Our competition included teams comprised of employees from local businesses and the University of Michigan Alumni Club. Despite our lackluster overall record, team members looked forward to Monday evenings. “I met so many fellow alums, many of whom were students at Notre Dame during my years there, but whom I had never before met. To reminisce, to network, and to enjoy some friendly competition with fellow alums were highlights of my summer,” said Houston Hum, Class of 2007. “I really enjoyed playing softball with so many people who share a love for Notre Dame. We formed friendships which will last for years. It was truly a rewarding experience,” said Julie Hum, SMC Class of 2007. The team was coached by Russ Dodge, Class of 74, who defied all odds by losing nearly every single coin toss. As a result, the team usually found itself in the visitors’ dugout. Regardless, the team enjoyed the time together and we all look forward to starting again next summer. Perhaps Russ can practice calling coin tosses in the offseason.

Annual Golf Outing was a Huge SuccessThe golf outing held at Broadmoor Country Club was very well attended. 2013 was a success with 107 Golfers and an additional 25 people joining in the dinner. We had several new sponsors this year that contributed to the overall success of the outing with 2 large sponsorships from NDFCU and Browning Investments. The event raised over $6,500 for the club with over $1500 from the sale of Mulligans going into the Club operating fund.

Thank you to our generous sponsors:

GOLD SPONSOR: Notre Dame Federal Credit union

SILVER SPONSOR: Browning Investments, Inc.

HOLE SPONSORS: Ascension Asset Management, City Securities Corp, EGA (Edward George Assoc), Hurco Companies, Inc., Kennedy Tank, Jolly Family & Browning/Pile Financial Management, Mary Petrucce, Proman Consulting, Publicis USA, Uebelor & Sons/Tony Uebelhor, Wagner Reese, LLP

On Saturday, September 14, the Club co-hosted a tailgate before the ND/Purdue game with the West Central Indiana ND Club. The event was well attended—we even allowed a few Purdue fans to join us! Thanks to the efforts of Joe Radzikowski of the West Central Club we were treated with visits from both the cheerleaders and the band who led us in cheers and The Fight Song. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped to organize the event.

A BIG thank you goes to Gus LeGeay, Houston Hum, Dave Deeter, Peggy Trier, Paul Pittman, and Michelle Steele our top ticket sellers this year, and to all the ND Club members for buying their tickets. We raised over $2,300 in support of the Club Scholarship Fund. To those of you who participated in this effort, you have helped make a difference in a young person’s life by allowing the Club to provide financial assistance to deserving students entering Notre Dame.
