The Norwegian ”Ocean and Water” project:

Introducing an extended information overview on State of the Environment Norway

SEIS Country Visit workshop 13.-14.11. By Olle Morten Grini, Norwegian Pollution Control Authority.

Background

Summer 2008: The Ministry of Environment commissioned us to work out an upgraded and extended version of:

to be able to present ”all” relevant information about the marine and (fresh)water environment.

• Important elements would be:

– Presentations of integrated management planning of the sea and water resources - and the follow-up of these plans

– Thematic presentations in different levels based on the DPSIR- model

- Presentation of national goals and how we try to achieve them

– Give an overview of all relevant data sets covering sea areas, rivers, lakes and ground water resources

– Give access to external data base applications (guiding functionality)

- and the SoE- Norway should play an important part in the future SEIS network.

• A working group has been established, consisting of some national governmental and expert institutions, especially covering the ocean expertise.

• A report on how to implement the new solution (upgrading and extending the SoE-Norway) will be given to the MoE by the end of this year.

How are we dealing with the commitment?

Some facts about SoE-Norway

• The MoE has assigned the management of the website to the environmental authorities (directorates)

• SoE-Norway aims to give the latest information about the state and development of the environment.

• The service presents environmental topics in a simple and easy-to-follow way and provides access to more detailed scientific presentations.

..but they have to tell a story!

Data set overview :

• A special project is now being carried out to get an overview and characterisation of all relevant data sets on sea and water.

• This project will also suggest a solution of searching functionality on how to get easy access to information about the data set.

• Then we will find a solution to present this data overview on the SoE- Norway.

Data sevices on the SOE-Norway:

SEIS compatibility

The MoE expects the SOE- Norway to play a central role in the SEIS network system in the future, and this condition will be important in our further work with the ”Ocean and Water” project.

So far there do not seem to be any problems with the SEIS principles (they are similar to our national principles).

..but: For the time being we have to get more understanding of the performance of the SEIS / WISE system – and how to communcate in a network, both nationally and internationally

An important question for us is: How will the thematic (descriptive) information be handled in the SEIS system?

We look forward to further cooperation with the SEIS implementation!

Thank you!
