How To Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Story Cont. from pg.1

“This Plant worn by the [Irish] people upon St. Patrick’s Day…when they often commit excess of liquor.” * Enjoy some Irish entertainment. Many famous actors, poets and musicians hale from the homeland. Perhaps a quiet night sipping on Bailey’s Irish Cream and listening to U2, Enya or the Irish Tenors hits the spot. * Be the Irish entertainment. “What are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day?” usually trans-lates to, “Where are you drinking for St. Patrick’s Day?” As a culture that is known to enjoy a “drop of the creature,” the idea of going out for a pint together is more a social bond-ing experience and reason to party with friends. Many pubs put green food coloring in the beer to make it somewhat official, but other Irish drinks include: Murphy’s, Guinness, Beamish, Irish whiskey, Irish coffee, and Irish cider. *Make Irish food... American style. Though Irish soda bread is sold around March 17 in most places, there is also Irish oatmeal, corned beef and cab-bage, oxtail soup and different versions of cooking the po-tato. Most bagel shops offer green bagels, but green col-ored cakes, cupcakes and cookies are also in large abun-dance at this time. Many authentic Irish recipes can be found online, but that depends on how far you want to go in your Irish food celebration. Sugary treats such as “Irish Potatoes” are made for chil-dren to take to school, but keep in mind, there are no actual potatoes in the recipe. To make, have ready 2 lbs. of pow-dered sugar, one stick of butter, 8 oz. of cream cheese, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla, 1 lb. shredded coco-nut and cinnamon. Mix all of the ingredients together (except the cinnamon) until smooth and then refrigerate for a few hours. Roll the mixture into tiny balls and then sprin-kle with cinnamon, which will give the “potatoes” their skin. *Go to a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Approximately 500,000 people attended the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin, Ireland in 2006, but nearly 2 million drew in for the parade in New York City. The first green parade was held in Boston in 1737, but was followed up by the 1762 celebration in New York when Irish soldiers in the British army marched through the streets. The New York St. Patrick’s Day parade is now the largest in the world, but other cities put their own unique spin on things. *Decorate your home, classroom, workspace, and city. St. Patrick’s Day decorations consist of paper or plastic shamrock banners, leaping leprechauns with pots of gold, shades of the Irish flag (green, white and orange), or a decorative bouquet of green and white flowers. If you really want to add a personal touch to someone’s St. Patrick’s Day, send a pot of shamrocks or clover seeds. Sound overly-sentimental? It is, but the day is for fun, so relax. Have a fun holiday, complements of St. Patty!

For every new Rotary year there is a theme. Newly elected 2012-2013 Rotary International President-elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through Service in 2012-13. Tanaka had this to say regarding the new theme and year. "Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways."
