It’s Your Show…

This January is NJOS’ 50th show! A well-attended show is one of the ways we bring in new members and keep NJOS a vibrant thriving Orchid Society; but we can’t do it without your help. Won’t you come out and support the show and NJOS?

We need your help with every aspect of the show. Have you put out the show flyers that Anita distributed in December? If you haven’t already done so, time to get going – grocery stores, coffee shops, plant nurseries, and libraries are all good places to display our show poster. We need to get the word out in order to bring in the crowds! If you need more flyers, please ask Anita.

Do you have a van, station wagon or car with a roof rack? We could really use your help to transport items from our storage unit to the show venue. Only driving is required. Please contact Richard Ho if you can help and save us several hundred dollars in truck rental fees.

Already, many people have signed up to clerk for show judging; we also need volunteers to staff the Welcome desk in 2 hours shifts on Friday, Sat-urday and Sunday (Jan 13-15). John will talk about what constitutes a quality flower in each of the major groups. This is going to be an inter-active discussion about why some flowers are superior to others. In looking at examples of good, better, and excellent flowers, John will in-vite comments and questions. The group will have a chance to express their own opinions. We are hoping this will prepare our members to select good plants for exhibiting in our show, as well as to provide some guidelines when shopping.

Your Help Is Needed!

Volunteer at the North Jersey Orchid Show and Sale and earn valuable reward points

Come join the fun! Sign up for volunteer activities by emailing Carrie Buchman ([email protected]). It is helpful to know who and how many people are coming in advance, but walk-ins are always welcome.

No Experience Necessary! Everyone Welcome!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 Begin the transformation of Trayes Hall in the Douglass Student Center into an orchid oasis. Bill Stender heads up the construction crew. Workshop, exhibits and vendor areas are set up; and the North Jersey orchid exhibit is built including orchid taxonomy verification and plant labeling. Pizza lunch is provided.

Thursday, January 12, 2017 The transformation of Trayes Hall is completed with the remaining exhibitors and the vendors load-ing in. This may involve unpacking shipping crates and/or building displays. Workshop, exhibits and vendor area set-up is completed. Pizza lunch is provided. All volunteers are welcome

Friday, January 13, 2017 Show Judging: Following a light breakfast, clerk-volunteers work in teams with American Orchid Society (AOS) accredited judges to locate plants in exhibits, record awards, and place show ribbons. Irwin Slotnick is head clerk and will provide direction to newbies or refreshers to those who need it. Judging is a team activity and clerks are often invited to participate in ribbon and trophy award con-versations. Lunch is provided. Advance registration for clerks is greatly appreciated to facilitate the creation of name badges.

AOS Judging: After lunch, 4 to 6 clerk-volunteers pull selected plants from exhibits for American Orchid Society (AOS) judging and return them after judging. Volunteers are welcome to listen in on the judging discussion and ask questions as time permits.

Welcome Table: 3 to 5 volunteers welcome visitors to the show and answer questions as needed including handing out orchid culture sheets and North Jersey Orchid Society membership forms. Anita Gibaldi and her band of trusty volunteers oversee the Welcome Desk and coordinate the twice-daily orchid raffles. Welcome desk volunteers work in 2 hour shifts.

Saturday, January 14, 2017 Fragrance Judging: 2 to 4 clerk-volunteers pull selected plants from exhibits for fragrance judging, coordinate fragrance ribbon placement and return plants once judging is complete.

Welcome Table: See above.

Sunday, January 15, 2017

Welcome Table: See above.

Tear Down: At the conclusion of the show, volunteers help exhibitors and vendors remove their ex-hibits and pack up and return Trayes Hall to its former boring self. Many hands make this activity about a 1 hour commitment.

This talk will review some of the easy to grow, less demanding varieties including general care tips.

11:30 AM The Basics of Orchid Photography

Presented by Maurice Garvey who is an American Orchid Society certified photographer. Learn how to take pictures

using a cell phone, iPad mini, point and shoot camera, or a digital SLR using lighting techniques with inexpensive re-

flectors. He will cover white balance, macro settings, flash and inexpensive software. Also learn about some phone

and iPad apps for photography.

E-MAILS WORTH REPEATING:

Bill Stender wrote on December 22nd

:

We have booked two more speakers for 2018 in cooperation with our sister societies:

June 2018 with DCOS and SEPOS- Francisco Miranda speaking on Brazili-an orchids http://www.mirandaorchids.com/ Francisco sells at the SEPOS show

September 2018 with DOS and SEPOS Tom Kuligowski speaking on an-graecum http://angraecums.blogspot.com/ Tom also has a Facebook page.

As an interesting side note, both DCOS and DOS meet on the same day. DCOS has increasingly been interested in moving their meetings to the second Monday in order to create a 4 society share. They have done this twice already for Mac Rivenbark in September 2017 and Allen Black in April 2018. This is very encouraging and gives us even more possibilities to bring in speakers from a great distance!

Julie Hallberg answered:

Excellent. Not that you folks haven't tried myriad times to try to get members on board to help with fundraisers (i.e. our show, auctions, etc.), but my first thought when I read Bill's message was members have to be more involved and supportive if we are going to have speakers like these. I think it bears repeating at our next meeting, when I'm sure Bill will mention these speak-ers, that everyone has to be a participant. It is not enough to just be a mem-ber. Can we have sheets at the Jan or Feb meeting with all the committees/events and ask every member to sign up for one or more?? We might also want to mention the Society that has recently ceased operating and that we need to all work together to keep ours vibrant, educational, and a wonderful place to meet and share. Also, members seem to like the speakers and get to the meetings to hear the speakers and so I would think they could help and/or support our fundraisers (i.e., auctions, etc). At the very least it would be nice to count on members to show up for our show in January to support NJOS and the vendors who pay money to participate in our show. Julie

NJOS MEETING LOCATION

Location: The Hanover Manor 16 Eagle Rock Avenue, East Hanover, NJ 973-887-2682 Dinner: 7:00 P.M.

A complete buffet dinner, including coffee/tea and dessert is available for $20

Cash bar is provided

Please have your plants on the Plant Table by 7:00 P.M

Got Extras? Do you have duplicates in your collection? Maybe you divided that amazing orchid or just want to downsize your collection. Donating to the NJOS semi-annual auctions is always a great way to find new homes for your ‘chids. But now you don’t need to occupy valuable growing space waiting for the next auction; you can donate orchids to raffles and silent auctions and get a $10 coupon good for raffle tickets, auctions, or silent auctions anytime in the next calendar year. Plants in bud or bloom are particularly appreciated and generate a lot of interest; even a photo of the flower can make for orchid “lust.”

Raffles and auctions help NJOS provide top quality speakers and pro-grams. So help us keep the good times coming! Raffles and/or silent auctions are planned for each monthly meeting with the exception of the auctions, potting party, and Holiday Party.

Beginning at our DECEMBER meeting, we will have up to 5 donated orchids for the raffle, and each donor receives a $10 coupon for each plant they donate! Orchids in bud/bloom may go to silent auction at the discretion of the receiving Board Member. Donors are encouraged to let Carrie Buchman know in advance if they are donating orchids for a raf-fle and, by doing so, “reserve” their space; “walk-ins” are also welcome on a first-come basis.

Just because it must be said: Donations may be refused by the receiving Board Member for any reason including but not limited to: missing label (genus and species/grex), bugs, poor plant health, excessive donations, etc. This offer does not apply to vendor donations.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

If you haven’t already, please renew your

membership for the 2016-2017 fiscal year

by bringing a check to the DECEMBER

meeting for $30 made payable to NJOS

and give it and the membership form to

Sandra, our membership chairperson.

If you want to mail your check and mem-

bership form, please send them to San-

dra Mackowiak, 15 Alexander Drive, Ran-

dolph, NJ 07869. Those members re-

ceiving a printed newsletter each month

are asked to pay an additional $10 to

cover the cost of printing and mailing.

Just a Reminder

Members are encouraged to bring in their plants

for diagnosis by our expert growers. If you have

a plant that is not doing well and you don’t know

why, please bring it to one our meetings. It will

be an educational opportunity for all of us. Or, if

you have something unusual about your plant

and would like to show it, bring it in! We’d love to

see it.

HELP IS NEEDED

NJOS is looking for help from someone who

has a vehicle large enough to transport 10’

long pieces of lumber that are used for set-

ting up displays at our show. Transporta-

tion would be on Wednesday morning, Jan-

uary 11, from the storage space in East Han-

over to Rutgers, New Brunswick. And re-

turn them to the storage space on Sunday,

January 15, after 5 p.m.

Also, we are looking for someone to go to

Newark Airport and pick up boxes of plants

for Ten Shin Orchids and bring them to Rut-

gers, New Brunswick.

If you can help with either of these or both

please contact

Bill Stender <[email protected]>

or Richard Ho <[email protected]>.

Thank you,

All,

It’s that time of year again. The Holiday Season upon us and it is immediately followed by the NJOS Orchid Show and Sale. Last year you clerked for the show and I invite you to do so again this year. Judging is Friday January 13 at the Rutgers University Douglass Student Cen-ter (100 George Street, New Brunswick NJ). This is the same venue as last year. The show then runs through Sunday January 15.

All the volunteering opportunities are outlined on the NJOS website (https://njorchids.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/njos-2017-show-volunteer-opportunity-summary.pdf ). Everyone is welcome and no experience is needed. Walk-in volunteers are welcome, but if you can let me know you are coming, it is helpful, especially for clerks as we make name tags. Bring your friends

Hope to hear from you soon.

2017 Philadelphia Flower Show

While this is not a dedicated orchid show, there are usually a number of intriguing entries. The PFS has made it easier to participate for orchid growers. You still have to register way in ad-vance, but you do not have to provide the details of the plant till just before the show (when you know what you actually will have in bloom). If you would like to show a plant or two, you can down-load the instructions and forms here:

Stamford Judging Center

Benefit Auction The December 17th snow storm (±7” in Stamford),

caused the auction (& judging) to be called off. The

auction has been rescheduled for January 21st, which

is the regular January judging date.

If you would like a list of the auction plants, please

send an email to Carrie ([email protected]) or Gin-

na ([email protected]).

This is an interesting and entertaining event. Now that

the Holidays are over there is no excuse for not attend-

ing.
