Have you marked your calendar for NJOS’ 48th Annual Orchid Show? Like a swan that serenely glides along, the show committee is furiously paddling beneath the surface, and we need your help!
It’s time to get involved! Everyone can contribute and your participation is most welcome. Setting up the show is a fun time with your fellow NJOS and other Orchid Society members. Opportunities abound; talk to me or the listed chair about where you’d like to help.
Show Set Up. Come on Wednesday, January 14th and help set up Strawberry Blossom for the exhibitors and vendors. This activity does require some physical labor in setting up tables, laying out plastic, building the NJOS “waterfall” for our main exhibit, and similar activities. Please sign up with Carrie Buchman.
Plant Contributions. Bring your blooming orchids to Strawberry Blossom on Wednesday, January 14th before 1 P.M. For the first time, NJOS will have a second tabletop exhibit for mini orchids (no more than 6” mature plant excluding inflorescence). If you can’t bring your orchids, please coordinate with Anita Gibaldi who may be able to organize a pick-up. Carrie would greatly appreciate an email list of your orchids by Sunday, January 11th to facilitate registration – include all possibilities. It’s a lot easier to delete an entry in real-time that to add one.
NJOS Ambassadors. Come on Thursday, January 15th and help vendors and exhibitors set up. Typically, Ambassadors answer questions about power cords, lighting, where boxes can be stored and the like. During the show, Friday through Sunday, Ambassadors can give guided tours of the exhibits, help people shop, answer general questions about orchids from the visitors. Please sign up with Carrie Buchman.
Exhibit Set up. The NJOS exhibits will be set up on Wednesday, January 14th in the afternoon. All hands are welcome. Each plant needs to be labeled and registered and placed in the exhibit.
Welcome Committee. Whenever the show is open to the public (Friday-Sunday), we will have people at the welcome table to provide culture sheets, organize tours, manage the twice a day plant drawing, and answer questions. Shifts can be 2 hours long, or whatever time you have. Please sign up with Anita Gibaldi.
Food Committee. Lunch is provided to all present on Wednesday and Thursday and to the Judges and Clerks on Friday. We also provide coffee and bagels (or similar) to the volunteers and vendors on Sat-urday & Sunday. Please sign up with Julie Hallberg to help with food.
Judging Clerks. We need clerks on Friday, January 16th starting at 8:45 A.M. to help with the show judg-ing and then after lunch to help with the AOS judging. All clerks are invited to lunch with the Judges. Please sign up with Irwin Slotnick.
Take down. On Sunday, January 18th at 4 P.M., we take down the show. Come and pick up your plants and lend a hand. It only takes about 90 minutes to tear down and clean up; and this is definitely a case where many hands make light work!
There is a something for everyone.
Come to enjoy the show, to help out and to join the fun!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
It is Thanksgiving eve as I write this column and snow is beginning to fall. I am pondering all the things I am thankful for. Aside from the usual things (such as health, a loving spouse, a won-derful and supportive family), I am very thankful for the wonderful people in the NJOS. I am blessed be among all of you and to work with such dedicated people by my side to help run the society. Bill Stender has done a magnificent job in finding outstanding speakers. If you thought he was fantastic to date, you haven’t seen what’s in store for 2015. Bart Costello is very diligent and meticulous in watching the society’s finances and keeping the books in order. Anita Gibaldi must be commended for doing an exceptional job with the newsletter and winning trophies for our society exhibit at shows. She is always lending a hand to help get the job done. Marion Israel never ceases to amaze me in finding magnificent plants for our auctions, Holiday party, and potting party. I am thankful for the (relatively) new members Carrie Buchman, Lisa Choplo, Julie Hallberg and Rich-ard Rampinelli. You bring enthusiasm and zeal to the society—it’s so refreshing. Carrie has taken over as show chair and brought many great ide-as. The 2015 show promises to be extraordi-nary—don’t miss it. I don’t have the space to thank everyone, but rest assured I appreciate everyone’s contribution to the society no matter how small—it all adds to the whole. In addition, the members are what makes a society. I look forward to each meeting wondering what phe-nomenal plants you will bring to the show table. I enjoy the discussions and stories about your plants. I love the banter between John Sullivan and Lenny Zieff--not to mention the sometimes inappropriate antics of Patti Lee. NJOS is truly the best society in my opinion, and I am thankful to be a part of it.
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Richard

Vice Presidents Corner,
Greetings fellow Orchid Geeks! Winter is finally here (and it
seems with a vengeance), but the long warm fall and lack of
any real frost until well into November has all my usual gar-
dening task overlapping each other. I can never remember
cleaning out the gardens in late November. For this reason
some of the orchids are also a little confused. My regular
Christmas bloomers have finished up and others seem con-
fused. We will see.
I like to use this period of time when the plants are slowly
going into rest mode to take a long look at the collection and
plan for the coming season. I like the fact that most plants
only need weekly watering and soon some will be every oth-
er week or not until we see new growth develop. Knowing
your collection and their watering and cultural needs is
something I am still dealing with, but I think I get a little better
every year.
I had the special opportunity to host Fred Clarke after our
meeting at me home and this gave me a chance to discuss
my growing and culture with a true professional. Some
things have been changed around and a few plants that I
have been nursing for years have made it to the compost
heap. It may sound harsh, but Fred said that we should cul-
tivate bloomers, and not act like an orchid hospital. Because
of this I have a little extra space on the benches now…….
As we continue to look forward to the January show and sale I want to thank all of you who have volunteered your time with set up and knock down as well as spending time during the show to greet, and be an ambassador for orchids. We had a good start to signing up in November. For those of you who did not sign up yet we still need a LOT of help. More signup sheets will be available during our holiday party and I am sure someone will tap you on the shoulder and ask where you can fit in. Remember that this society works well when we ALL work well. Garden clubs, orchid societies and other sacred and civic organizations are only as good as the members who pitch in to help. During this joyous Holiday season may the gift of volunteering be a big part of your vi-sion for this season and for 2015.
I look forward to seeing you all at our Holiday party. If you will not be joining us, I would like to take this time to wish you a Happy Hanukah and a Joyous Christmas.
Happy Growing!

PREPARING YOUR ORCHIDS FOR SHOW
By Anne Safarewitz
It may only be November, but ‘show time’ is approaching faster than you think and our little jewels have to
be shining their brightest for the big day. The suggestions below also apply if you are bringing your orchid to
the AOS judging center to be judged.
Begin to stake your plants progressively now, if you haven’t been doing it already. Carefully stake pseudo-
bulbs especially if you have a specimen plant. If your orchid is large with the hope of many flowers, you
should stake it also that it appears to be evenly flowered on all sides. Do not move the plant after it is staked
or you will change the direction that the plant was staked to grow in.
As show day approaches, hopefully you will be able to remove the stakes. If your plant has a lot of canes,
make sure that it is either staked upright or that it’s evenly grown and flowered to create a pleasant cascading
effect. If you really don’t know how to stake a plant correctly, you can bring it to any [NJOS] DCOS meet-
ing and ask one of our more experienced growers to show you the best way to stake the plant or inflo-
rescence.
If your plant has to be staked in order to transport it to the show to avoid flower breakage, try to stake it be-
fore you ring it to the staging area for the show.
Make sure that your orchids have no extra ‘meat’ on them. Mealy bugs, scale and spider mites are not espe-
cially appealing to your associates who then have to clean up the plants at show setup. It is a know fact that
the little beasts will be attracted to that orchid next to it in the cardboard box. There are many different kinds
of insecticides, oils and soaps that may be used to get rid of these pests depending upon your growing condi-
tions and size of your collection. Be thoughtful, and use them before you bring your plants to the collection
center.
Groom your plants! If they have any leaves that have been badly discolored for any reason, cut them off.
Trim off the edges of leaves that ae brown and cut them to a point, especially on Cymbidiums. Remove any
leaves that are dead. Clean off loose old tissue on older pseudobulbs (a soft bristle tooth brush and soapy wa-
ter does a great job). Not only will the plants look better, but you also will be able to see if there is scale hid-
ing under the old tissue.
Make sure that your name and complete name of your plant is printed on masking tape on the bottom of the
pot. The proper name includes any awards (AOS,RHS etc.) if applicable. This way you can remove and
save the tags to insure that they will not be lost or broken in transit. A written list of your plants should ac-
company the orchids when you drop them off, and you should keep a duplicate. Remember that we have to
complete accurate labels and entry forms with the proper name of the orchid for ribbon judging.
Indicate if you are interested in having your orchid ‘AOS’ judged. Don’t worry about the paperwork; some-
one on the setup committee will complete it for you. If anyone on the committee believes that the plant
should be judged, it will be entered for you unless you indicate that the plant is specifically not for AOS judg-
ing.
Remember, our exhibits are Society Exhibits. Don’t be afraid to bring in your plants for the show. Some of
the best plants are left on windowsills, under lights or in greenhouses because the owners didn’t think they
were ‘good enough’. Let’s try to make it our goal that the Society is represented by as many members as
possible, and not just a few individuals.
