  • Hello again my friends, Once again, Dayton is upon us and once again I will not be there. Hopefully, a few lucky souls in our bunch will attend and maybe even bring back a "goodie" or several. I don't think any major junk will be available, but maybe some manufacturer will come up with

something worthwhile. I have performed in that arena (Hara) and tried to de-molish it with many kW of bass guitar audio but it is still standing. It is my honest opinion,

that a wrecking ball would do that building a favor. Congrats to all that have made at least a mixed DXCC confirmed for our club call W4ZR possible. Last I looked we had over 200 worked mixed. Not bad for a short time try-

ing. And also kudos to the VP5DX team (N4KE,NU4Y and N4EPD) for their winning effort in the CQ WW SSB DX contest for the Caribbean/Central America, multi-op single trans-

mitter category. Way to go! YAY!!! That just shows the world that we are a DX club, not a BIGGIE, but still a DX club. This next meeting I would like to finalize commitments for Field Day in June, and set up a Secret Meeting for all participants to hash out the logistics.(probably 2 weeks before the

    contest See y'all there! 73. Larry, K4EB

The meeting was called to order by Larry K4EB at 6:00 P.M.

Treasurer’s Report -Treasurer Jim KC4FWS reported a balance of: $1075.88

Old business - Richard, K4UTE announced W4ZR has 96 QSOs confirmed on LoTW.

Field day - Field day is June 27-28. The club effort will be at Larry, K4EB's QTH. Barbecue will be on-hand, and a couple of motor homes for sleeping. Please notify K4EB if you plan to attend.

New business - Richard, K4UTE proposed the club claim W4FDA. It was pointed out that rules no longer permit a club to hold multiple calls.

Next meeting planner (May) is Mike N4EPD . The May meeting will be held at the field day site.

    Guests: . None

The meeting was adjourned at 6:18 P.M. — Respectfully submitted, Mike, NF4L, Secretary.

    The World According to NU4Y

There has not been much DX to work from this location this past month. So I will tackle a review of last year’s operations. The all year thing in 2014 was the ARRL Centennial operating event. The folks up at the league have been busy trying to keep up with all the awards. I received my WAS and Points Challenge awards this past month, very nice wall paper, now only need to find room on the walls for it.

Also got my CQ magazine and saw that VP5DX won the Multi-Single trophy for Caribbean/Central America in the 2014 CQ World Wide SSB contest. Much thanks in advance to Bob Raymond WA1Z for sponsoring this award. It will go on the Wall of Shame down at Ron’s house in Middle Caicos. (If the drill is still there) With only 3 operators this was certainly a challenge and a surprise to us. This year we should have more people and hopefully a better score. Want to join in on the fun? Let Ron know.

I am getting ready to go on vacation and saw a note from the Ship we will be on, that Wi-Fi might not be reliable when we were in certain areas. They suggested bringing an Ethernet cable to plug into the ships system. With my new cheap tab-let how was I to accomplish this? It turns out the easiest way is to have a Wi-Fi hotspot. Great more stuff to bring along. Well I found a miniature hotspot from Asus. It plugs into a USB power outlet and the Ethernet plugs into that. It will give you a hotspot from your room. This would also come in handy if you travel and have an outlet in your Hotel or Motel room. I also have enrolled in the Remote Ham Radio program. Maybe I will be able to get on the air some from half way around the world. I talk with a few friends every weekday morning on 20 meters and will give it a try. So far on limited trials it works ok. I could not do a microphone test from the RHR web site, probably something to do with my tablet, but it does work and could hear myself on 20 meters from a site in Connecticut. So the mike does work. I will give it more test-ing this week. Asus Wi-Fi with dime for size next to it. Since all this tablet stuff and texting is new to me, I noticed that a lot of abbreviations are used. I was texting with a few other hams and I said, “I saw it spotted”. I abbreviated it ISIS, apparently that is not the correct format……. I will fill in the trip experience next month. Maybe even send out a picture or two on the NFDXA reflector while over in Europe, or even give a frequency and time to get on the air. If all goes well.

    NFDXA April 2015 meeting pictures

As usual it was a festive gathering of the NFDXA DX/Contest clan in April at the Cedar River Seafood Restaurant in Middleburg. This time there were congratulations for the three members of the 2014 VP5DX CQ WW SSB team, win-ners of the Caribbean/Central America division for the 5th consecutive year. NU4Y notes in his column this month that it would be easier with more operators and urged more NFDXA members to consider making the trip to VP5 in Octo-

Willis Island DXpedition 2015 An international team will activate amateur radio DXpedition station VK9WA from Willis Islets November 12-21, 2015. Willis Island is #34 on the Club Log most wanted entities list and #35 The DX Magazine’s list. Willis has not been activated since 2008. The VK9WA team will depart Cairns, Australia for the 30 hour, 450km boat trip to Middle Island (8km North of South Island where the Willis Island weather monitoring station is located). Middle Island is very small (about 4 acres) and entirely uninhabited - except for thousands of sea birds, crabs, and turtles. The on-air operation will last 10 days with high power CW, SSB, and RTTY on 80-10 meters (possibly 160 meters). Our primary focus will be providing all time new contacts with this highly demanded, rarely

activated entity. All activity is subject to final permitting, weather, and other contingencies. We will have extremely limited internet access while on the island, but plan near-real-time Club Log uploads via satellite. We will follow the DX Code of Conduct and invite you to do so also. All operations will be split - do not call on our frequency! Our team is experienced at working large pileups and you will get in the log quickly if you listen to instructions, send your full call once (then listen), and do not call out of turn. -- http://vk9wa.com/

3W3MD – Da Nang, Vietnam Vietnam will be the next destination of the Mediterraneo International Dx ClubTeam and so it will be soon on air any mode/any band. With the call-sign: 3W3MD. At the moment the team is already full of skill oper-ators, as a matter of fact: 20 people coming from 8 (eight) Countries. There will be be five stations on the air around the clock. For any further news and updates please stay tune because the official web site of this new great adventure is coming. — http://www.mdxc.org/

Plans are to depart Cocos (Keeling) on March 26th. According to Wikipedia, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also called Cocos Is-lands and Keeling Islands, is a territory of Australia, located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Christmas Island and approximately midway between Aus-tralia and Sri Lanka. The territory consists of two atolls and 27 coral islands, of which two, West Island and Home Island, are inhabited with a total population

    of approximately 600.

FR/J Operation Approved for March 2016

Among the upcoming Dxpeditions announced dur-ing the recent Visalia DX Conference was a March 2016 operation by the Lyon DX Gang to FR/J Juan de Nova, currently the 6th most-wanted DXCC entity on the ClubLog list and 13th on the DX Magazine list. The last major operation from Juan de Nova was in the 1980s and was done with a combined team from the mili-tary, TO4E, and TO4WW from Europa, the other half of the ARRL DXCC Entity of Europa and Juan de Nova. That operation scored 34,000 QSOs. Access to Juan deNova and Europa is limited because they are protected flora and fauna habitats. Details of the upcoming March 2016 operation, including more precise dates are still being worked out but at this writing it looks like 10 people for 15 days.

IRAQ ACTIVATION POSSI-BLE IN JUNE BY F4HGL

YI – IRAQ (CQZ 21) F4HGL, Moustafa, is head-ing to Baghdad, Iraq at the end of June for a six-month stay. He is currently waiting for his YI ticket as he plans to be QRV in his "free time mostly in SSB" says F6AJA, Jean-Michel, editor of Les Nouvelles DX. Moustafa will be taking an IC-718 and FT- 450D and will be running 100 watts into an Alpha EZ Military or HyEndFed 5 Bands. Activity will be mostly on SSB on the HF bands, including the WARC-79 bands. QSL via F5OWK. -- DDX

Intrepid DX Group's VP8SGI/VP8STI Team Announces Operating Strategy

During the January voyage to South Sandwich, the first island that they’ll activate, the team will select a band; possibly 20, 17 or 15 meters (whichever has the best propagation) and be QRV with one station on this band for the duration of the DXpedition. The same procedure will be followed when the team moves on after 10 days to South Georgia. This will give everyone a chance to VP8/S and G at least once on the selected band. In addition, during the final 24 hours of QRV from each island, the team will announce a band and only accept contacts from new-first time stations on this selected band. Those chasing band slots can work the DXpedition 10-160 meters on the other bands. The VP8SGI/VP8STI team feels that it is of critical importance that their primary strategy includes a means for everyone to make at least one contact with the rare islands of South Sandwich (#3 ClubLog, 7 DX Mag) and South Georgia (#9 ClubLog,16 DX Mag).

TWO WEEK OCTOBER OPERATION TO 3C A POSSIBILITY

Equatorial Guinea (3C) ranks number 35 world wide on the Club Log Most Wanted List and LA7GIA, Ken, is working on this one for his next DXpedition. Plans are for a two week operation from Malabo Island (AF-010) in October 2015. Getting into Equatorial Guinea can be difficult between getting a visa and obtaining a license. Ken is hoping to obtain the call 3C7GIA and is tentatively looking at October 10-22. GIA is planning to be QRV on 3.5

through 28 MHz on all modes using a beam, on the high bands, and an amplifier. Stay tuned for updates -- DDX

Interview with Dmitri Zhikharev-RA9USU - from N6PSE Blog

Introduction: Dmitry Zhiklarev or “Dima” as his friends call him is an amazingly talented CW operator. In my view, he is probably one of the best ever. Dmitri is a very private, somewhat reserved person. He does not like to be in the spotlight and is very content to work and operate behind the scenes, out of the limelight. He reluctantly agreed to do this interview and I am grateful for his sharing of his insights and views with the readers of my Blog. Dmitri has been on numerous Dxpeditions beginning with 5A7A in Lybia. He has a distinctive CW operating style, very fast, smooth and predictable. Dmitry has shown considerable skill in activating the difficult if not impossible entities. In 2012, he made his second visit to Sana’a Yemen and brought his life’s savings. The culmination of that effort was his license and approval to con-duct a DXpedition from Socotra Island, Yemen.

What is not well known is that Dima had immediate permission to get on the air himself, but instead chose to wait and to build a team, what would later be the 7O6T DXpedition. Dima is the epitome of a team player and works very hard to ensure the success of any DXpedition. Dmitri was born in Siberia but now lives in Moscow with his wife and children. He became a member of UA9UWM radio club in 1983 at the age 8 and was licensed at age 15 in 1989. Dmitry has previously lived in Brooklyn New York for a decade and holds US Extra call KP2P. He is the recip-ient of the 2014 Intrepid Spirit Award and I’m confident that Dmitri is a future DX Hall of Famer. Here is the interview. – N6PSE

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, how are you able to travel and join so many DXpeditions?

Dmitri-RA9USU: I recently quit my Job. I will now start my own Communications Consulting business and work for myself. I am an experienced Communications Engineer.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, you are a very talented CW Operator. Tell me how you learned and have mastered CW?

Dmitri-RA9USU: First of all I don’t really think that I am anyhow different from other CW operators from Eastern Europe. In the Soviet Club Sys-tem, you must master High Speed CW before you can enjoy operating the station on your own. You cannot just be a SSB operator or know just a small amount of CW. You have to be a strong CW man or you are not allowed to enjoy the radio. In Russia, we learn CW in our own way. We do not focus on the characters as much as the combined characters together to make words. We then use the words in a “sing song” fashion which enables us to learn CW at faster rates. Also in the High Speed telegraphy you receive and transmit messages in military manner, groups of letters, which is completely meaningless – that forces you to avoid “guessing” the next one or the word in general.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, What was your favorite place to operate?

Dmitri-RA9USU: My first and most favorite place of operation is still 4U1UN, thanks to my friend Mohammed Jendoubi, KA2RTD. But if you are talking about DXpedition experience – that was Libya in 2006 as a member of the 5A7A team. This was my first serious DXpedition and I became hooked on the experience.

Paul N6SE: Dmitri, what are your dreams of places that you would like to activate?

Dmitri-RA9USU: I am interested not in “places” nor “entities”, I am operating with people. Friends I respect and enjoy traveling with. Most of the time I am just asking my friends to take me with them, so in the other words – I will go anywhere to operate, as long as the Team is good and I have enough money.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, on April 18th, you will be honored at the International DX Convention with the Intrepid Spirit Award for your activations of Socotra Yemen as 7O6T and 7O2A. How do you feel about Yemen as it nears civil war?

Dmitri-RA9USU: I do not speculate on politics and I am really sorry for what happening in Yemen right now. I hope that one day there will be no War and I would be able to go to Socotra again and again to operate as 7O2A.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, I hear that you are a King, can you tell us about this?

Dmitri-RA9USU: Yes, I am the King of Bir Tawil. Last year I was travelling to the section of desert between Sudan and Egypt that neither country wants or claims. So I have travelled there, crossed Bir Tawil until the Sudanese border, planted the flag and staked my name and made myself King. Later I found that it was falsely claimed by one person, who hasn’t any proof of visiting Bir Tawil nor responded to my official request. Hopefully soon you will be able to work a new King on the air from my Kingdom.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, what is your favorite band to operate?

Dmitri-RA9USU. I like all the bands and have no favorite. I like them all.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, 7O6T was not allowed to work any Israeli 4X4 stations and was closely monitored by the Yemeni Authorities. How do you feel about that?

Dmitri-RA9USU: You have to understand that before you operate from any country you have to agree to obey the local regulations. The “4X4 issue” ( blown out of proportions by “small but vocal group”) – is just a technicality. There is a still many countries (including, for example, DPRK), which is not recognizing Israel as a State. Therefore none of the amateur radio licenses, issued by unrecognized government are in fact legal in the eyes of the Government of Yemen in this case. — Continued on page 16

LAST ACTIVATION DATES for CLUB LOG’S TOP 15

On the right are tre last activa-tion dates for the current Club Log top 15 (knowing KP1 will certainly

drop off the list . This means that excluding Heard,

every DXCC entity has been on the

    DXCC for W4ZR

We'd like to get DXCC for W4ZR. When you work a station, work them as W4ZR too. Bands don't matter for now, just mode. Send your ADIF records to Richard, K4UTE. He will post them to LoTW. There is a summary of what has been worked. Please update the summary when you work a country.

Click below for the Summary page:

    http://nfdxa.com/w4zr/summary.asp

The DXCC summary for W4ZR as this is being written at 2pm EDT 12 May is:

    CW: 128 Digi: 38 Fone: 123 Wkd: 207 Cfm: 139

Interview with RA9USU—Continued from page 8 You must follow the rules in the host country or risk being shut down, possible expulsion or even jail for breaking the rules. Most of the previous operations were challenged by local authorities based on the violation of that exact rule. Also, it is not the secret, that some of the famous amateur radio operators are using “but he was working the Israeli station” in Arabic countries to push the immediate stop to the any operation, or for gaining

the political points in the stake of their own agenda.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, you have just returned from a DXpedition in TI9, Cocos Island. How was that?

Dmitri-RA9USU: TI9 was warm and beautiful. The operating location was nearly surrounded by high mountains blocking the signals in many direc-tions. I met a new friends and happy to be able to operate from such a remote location. I have to prepare myself for the future operations from Island locations and doing it from Cocos Island really helped to realize the organization challenges in places, where you don’t have any local procurement available.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, you have shown great aptitude to activate the rare and difficult entities such as 7O-Yemen. What other rare enti-ties would you like to activate?

Dmitri-RA9USU. I would like to activate a few rare entities. I am working on some things but I will rather not speculate on that.

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, how do you feel about pileup behavior? Is it getting worse?

Dmitri-RA9USU: Pile-up is the reflection of the operator on the DX side. It is good that contact numbers are growing from the DXpedition perspec-tive, but that’s surely reflects on the mood of the mob. If DX-operator is strict enough (sometimes it is taking a lot of disciplinary actions) then less chaos you will get from the pile-up. People, who really deserve to work your station – they will definitely do that. Listen! Listen! Good operator will give you a clue on where, how and when he will listen. If you paying attention – you will not have any troubles working the station. For example – when I feel that callers have trouble copying my returns – I’ll check my own frequency. In case there is a mess on it – I will slightly move away and start call-ing UP with exact number of Kc’s, to avoid the pile and work only those, who listen…

Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, what are the qualities of the best Dxpedition operators?

Dmitri-RA9USU: The best operators are Team players, flexible, versatile and have real stamina to operate for long periods at a rapid rate. Not everyone can do that. You have to have trust in people, especially if you going to the places where your life depends on the person next to you. One mistake can cost you not just money, invested to the operation, but in the worse case scenario -the life of the person, depending on you or your own life. Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, where or what will you accomplish in the next five years?

Dmitri-RA9USU: I have launched my own company, My wife and I would like to live somewhere warm and cozy, perhaps Socotra Island, Yemen. Somewhere, where I can build a nice station.

Paul N6PSE: Any your proudest accomplishment or Award? Dmitri-RA9USU: My proudest accomplishment is my sons who are growing up to be fine young men. I will try to do my best so they can be proud of being my kids. Paul N6PSE: Dmitri, on behalf of a grateful global DX Community, thank you for all that you do, you have really added some excitement and some rare activations and we know that you are just getting started..

Blast from the Past—Don Miller, W9WNV at Visalia

Legendary DXpeditioner Don Miller, formerly W9WNV and now with the call sign AE6IY, was warmly received by a large and attentive audience. In the words a DXer who was there, “He was contrite and apologetic” (for his past DXpedition misdeeds) and it was apparent the audience was receptive and enjoyed his talk” because he received a standing ovation at its conclusion. Don said he had two major regrets. In all, W9WNV made a total of 53 DXpeditions! His first regret were the fabricated operations. Forty-five of his DXpeditions counted for DXCC. But there were six fake trips that didn't count, and two other real trips that were rejected for credit. As for the second regret, Don said he had a blacklist that he kept in his head and he didn’t work and log some individuals. He regretted those actions immensely. Don hopes to do a DXpedition the old fashion way some time in the future but didn’t say to where. BS7H, perhaps? : )

NCDXF MAKES $50,000 GRANT TO HEARD ISLAND DXPEDITION

Last April the Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) announced $50,000 grant to the VK0EK Heard Island DXpedition. The VK0EK Heard Island DXpedition planned for November 2015. Heard Island has moved up to the #5 position on the ClubLog Most Wanted List, after the recent Navassa operation. Within the last year, NCDXF has given $175,000 in grants to operations in Iran, Andaman, Navassa, Eritrea, South Sandwich, South Georgia, Chesterfield, Heard and to a yet unannounced DXpedition, all of which are in or near the Top Ten Most Wanted. Without major financial support from NCDXF, DXpeditions like the above to challenging or rare locations would not be possible.

The International DX Association, INDEXA, has been one of the major spon-sors and contributors to DXpeditions for over 33 years. Until now donations from U.S. amateurs could not be considered a tax deduction for your personal taxes. In early April INDEXA received the IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt status that now allows a

tax deduction for donations. DXpeditions to the rare DXCC entities that we all count on are getting harder and much more expensive. Investing in advance can help INDEXA with larger grants to these and other rare ones that have not even been announced yet publically. Remem-

ber, receiving a tax deduction for supporting your favorite hobby is a nice perk. Check out the INDEXA web site at for our past history and future DXpeditions we have already supported. Membership and tax deductable do-nations can be made on the web via our secure system or through our direct mailing

address on the bottom of the web page. May we continue to enjoy the thrill of the QSOs to the rare DX entities by helping to financially assist in

their success in advance. Support INDEXA...... -- K4MQG via INDEXA News Release

INDEXA GETS IRS 501 (c)(3) TAX STATUS

Intrepid VP8STI/VP8SGI Team Makes Braveheart Payment

Our plans are moving forward in all aspects. We are about to make our second installment of $113,000 to the Brave-heart. The Dxpedition Team has committed to paying half the costs of this Dxpedition and our Team's contribution is $210,000. To date, we have raised $105,000 towards our goal of raising $215,000. This puts us at 47% of our target. We would welcome additional support from the many DX Clubs around the globe. At the time of our activations, South Sandwich will be the #3 most wanted entity, while South Georgia will be the #7 most wanted DXCC entity.

  • FIRST CLASS MAIL

I was saddened to learn that ON4WW had abandoned his effort to conduct a one-man, three-month DXpedition to the much-wanted sub-Antarctic island of Bouvet. This uninhabited, frozen, wind-swept Norwegian pro-tectorate trails only North Korea as the world’s most-wanted DXCC entity. Mark had to abandon his quest be-cause money to fund his bare-boned effort was not availa-ble. Foundations that underwrite DXpeditons (NCDXF, INDEXA, etc.) typically do not fund single-person opera-tions. And the timing was bad. Mega-$$ operations to VK0H, VP8/S, VP8/G, FT/J, et al, were scheduled at about the same time. The general public ‘donation dollars’ just weren’t there. As much as it saddens me to finally say it, the days of the Gus Brownings, the Don Millers, et al, are in the past. May the good DX be yours. --NW4C
