Welcome back to Deeside...

Welcome back to The Deeside Stadium and a very big game for the club.

A warm welcome to Afon Lido after their long journey up here.

We go in to the game after our 1st home defeat of the season, we fell behind to Aberystwyth after just 2 mins and when they doubled their lead we had a big mountain to climb . We can not afford to give teams a 2-0 lead, and even though we did better in the 2nd half it proves just how hard this league will be and we can not start so slow in the future.

This will be a big game for both teams and we need to bounce back straight away with 3 games in the space of 7 days all the squad will be used to try and finish the month on a high.

Nomads go down fighting as fortress Deeside falls to AberEarly season form was turned upside down, when pre match favourites Nomads faced an uphill battle to get back into the game after Aberystwyth had raced into a 2-0 lead within 15 minutes of kick off.

The Nomads started wth the same line-up for the fourth consecutive game. Facing an Aberystwyth side who had conceded 15 goals and only scored twice in their previous five games, the home side must have been confident of extending their three match winning run. But Aberystwyth showed from the start that they were no pushovers and they stunned the Nomads with a second minute goal from Matty Collins. An Aberystwyth free kick was floated into the penalty area and headed on towards a crowded goalmouth, but he Nomads defence failed to clear the ball properly and it fell to Collins, who hit a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the Nomads net.

As the Nomads tried to settle into their normal passing game, they found the visitors willing to chase every ball and put pressure on the man in possession. This almost resulted in another Aberystwyth goal when a defensive error presented a goal scoring opportunity, but the Aber forward shot tamely at John Rushton who saved comfortably. The home side had a short period pressing the Aberystwyth defence, but then found themselves 2-0 down in the 15th minute when Jordon Follows scored from the penalty spot. Michael Robinson was adjudged to have pushed an Aberystwyth forward, as the ball floated into the penalty area from a free kick.

By the midway point of the first half, the visitors looked the sharper side and although Nomads worked hard to get back into the game, they failed to creat any goal-scoring opportunities. Mike Thompson was offside when running through onto a ball from Macca and then Macca failed to take advantage of a long ball from Tigger into the penalty area, his effort being put behind for a corner. The corner was cleared by the visitors, but when it was pumped back into the penalty area, Michael Robinson headed just wide.

The remainder of the first half was played out in a similar fashion, with Nomads battling to get into their normal style of play, but being frustrated by the visitors abilty to withstand the pressure and looking to hit Nomads on the break.

The second half started with Rob Jones coming on for Mike Thompson and Nomads continued to work hard to get back into the game, but the visitors held firm against the pressure. Nomads were failing to creat clear cut chances and started to resort to long range shots which never really troubled the Aberystwyth keeper. The home fans thought the breakthrough had arrived in the 60th minute, but they were disappointed when Gary O’Toole’s close range shot went narrowly wide of the goal. Nomads were certainly seeing more of the ball and after Dean Canning replaced Ricky Evans and he earned a corner in the 72 minute, but Danny Dobbins headed over the bar from the resultant corner. The mounting pressure on the visitors’ goal was demonstrated by the number of corners the Nomads were awarded and there were something like 14 or 15 in the second half. In a ten minutes period between the 70th and 80th minute, Nomads had eight corners including four in quick succession in less than two minutes. They also had an appeal for a penalty turned down too.

After missing the last three games, Danny Forde returned to the fray to replace Chris Rowntree in the 79th minute and within two minutes, he almost produced a goal scoring opportunity after good interplay with Tigger. As the game moved into the final minutes, the referee ignored a foul on Tigger that allowed an Aberystwyth forward to have run on the Nomads goal, but his goal attempt was foiled by a very good John Rushton save.

A frustrating afternoon for the Nomads got worse when Neil Ebrill was sent to the stand by referee Lee Evans, presumably for something he had said. The frustration finally boiled over resulting in a straight red card for Tigger, He was judged to have reacted in a violent manner to a foul by an Aberystwyth player, but the referee’s decision looked harsh when he failed to also punish the Aberystwyth player for his part in provoking the altercation.

When the fourth official indicated there would be 4 additional minutes, this became when 7 Danny Forde required treatment for an injury. Then as the game approached the last minute, Jamie Petrie scored his third goal in two games when he met a cross from the left with a shot on the volley from about 15 yards. Unfortunately this was to prove to be just a consolation goal, as Nomads suffered their second defeat of the season.

A disappointing result for the Nomads, who came up against an Aberystwyth side clearly willing to work very hard to get their season back on track after some poor performances.

Nomads drawn away at Rhyl in 2nd round of WPL CupThe recent draw second round of the Welsh Premier League Cup has seen gap Connah’s Quay Nomads receive an away draw at former Huws Gray Alliance rivals Rhyl.

Good afternoon

Welcome to our guests from Port Talbot. Afan Lido and ourselves were picked out by the bookmakers and media watchdogs as favourites for the two relegation spots. We both have other ideas and have made solid starts with victories over more fancied opposition. We have disposed of Llanelli and their next door neighbours Port Talbot. They have beaten Bala and Carmarthen. So today we compete to secure a foothold in the top six and not the foot. Paul Ried, his staff and players. Alan Howell and his committee and the supporters are welcomed to Deeside for the first time since 2005. We hope they enjoy the short stay and that they return south, pointless, but safely.

Last Saturday was a disappointment. That we lost was something that will happen to even the best at this level. That we didn’t play well was another. But for some to lose their discipline was to invite the outcome. OK, the ref had a bad game, but we enabled his poor decision making by getting into those positions unnecessarily. However, we didn’t just forfeit three points, but in doing so lost out two most influential midfielders. Danny Forde lasted ten minutes of his return to action but the injury he sustained could see him sidelined for a while now. Tigger probably didn’t connect with the drama queen in green, but he made the aggressive movement and drew the card which will keep him out for three games. I am sure Mark will have had something to say about it and I am sure we will learn. On a personal note, my thanks to Ray Brown for covering for me, as I was away with Pam for our anniversary.

How do you sum up this league so far? TNS with an international Centre forward, five hours without a goal !!! Carmarthen top of the pile after three weeks, then they get hammered 7-1 at Prestatyn only to hold TNS 0-0 the next time out !!! Aberystwyth get done 7-1 at Bangor but hold them 0-0 four days latter !!! Newtown were simply awful against us and we thought them real possibilities at the bottom come May , but they beat Bangor one side of meeting us and won 3-0 away at Llanelli the other !!! Prestatyn, another relegation favourite are currently joint top with consecutive wins over Carmarthen ,TNS and Bala !!! TNS outside the top two , Bala bottom and Llanelli down there as well. What is going on? We’ve only played five of the first 22 but already it would seem we are in for a strange season. It’s exciting, competitive and very, very uncertain. Good stuff for the fans but less so for the clubs as uncertainty is a concern, we all want to see two adrift at the bottom as soon as possible, as long as it’s not us.

A couple of big games coming up this week. Tomorrow the Under19’s step into Welsh Cup action. This is the year that the outstanding crop of Nomads youngsters (who we have so many hopes for ) have been working towards. It’s the final chance for most of them to justify their potential and given a fair draw make it to the last few of the Nation’s premier cup. They have a difficult start away at Llanberris. The welsh alliance hosts are potential giant killers. Local lads on a tight pitch with a fierce backing and a lower league referee from their neck of the woods in charge. We will need to see the discipline, awareness and skill that has been years in the making on display if we are to progress. You can shorten the odds by being there at 2pm to balance the support. Then on Tuesday night it’s the League cup and we are away at Cymru Alliance Rhyl. Whatever the competition we meet the Lilywhites’ in it’s a big game. We tend not to do well at Belle Vue and we need your backing there to reverse recent outcomes. They will want to beat us very much. For us it’s less of a key fixture and we will have an eye to a trip to the same area three days later when WPL points are on offer at Prestatyn. However, it would be really good to win and in this topsy-turvy season why can’t we win the League Cup? After all today’s visitors did just that last year. A reminder. The next home fixture is on Saturday 6th October when TNS visit. This is the live match on S4C and it kicks off at 3-45 pm.

We welcome the officials this afternoon. Huw was 4th official last week and we hope he does well and has a safe, relatively short trip back to Llanrhaeadr afterwards. However, we wonder as to the WPL’s desire to help its clubs and officials with the other three on duty all travelling up from the Cardiff area. We understand that referees need to travel the principality to gain greater consistency and experience. We don’t understand how anyone benefits by assistants and fourth officials making 350 mile round trips taking them over nine hours at a cost to the host club of £122 per car used, plus expenses. We welcome them warmly none the less, and have even greater appreciation for their efforts to enable us to have a game by undertaking such a journey. Enjoy the game

Afan Lido’s Club History

Shortly after the opening of the Lido Sports Centre in Aberavon, current Director of Football Phil Robinson, part of the Centre’s management team, saw the need to organise the many who came to the centre regularly in order to play football. In June 1967, he formed them into a club that gained admittance into the local Port Talbot and District League for season 1967-68.

This club was AFAN LIDO FC. A move upwards came in 1971-72 when the club was accepted into the Welsh Football League. Two seasons later, they earned promotion into the First Division (now Second Division) and after another two - year spell, gained promotion to the Premier Division (now the First Division and the second tier in the Welsh system). After finishing third in our first season at this level, there followed a barren spell that saw our club drop back a division until they bounced back in 1984-85. By this time the league had been reorganized and a higher National Division formed, to which they gained promotion 1989-90 after finishing third. The two previous seasons had actually seen us win the Premier Division championship but they failed to reach the ground criteria set by the League. The formation of the League of Wales provided the next step for the club, our application to join was successful, they were invited to become founder members for the inaugural 1992-93 season. A healthy mid-table position was achieved in this first season, finishing 12th overall. However, success in the League Cup, beating Caersws on penalties provided a superb end to the season.

This was not the club’s first major cup success however; in 1986-87 they had won the Welsh Intermediate Cup beating Taffs Well 1-0 in a replay at Briton Ferry. Our cup exploits continued in 1993-94. In a thrilling final at Aberystwyth they beat a rampant Bangor City side that had just clinched the League title. The narrow 1-0 win was enough to make people take notice and help fans forget a disappointing League campaign. Our club transformed matters, and narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 16th.

2004-05 was again a huge disappointment, an opening day 2-1 loss at TNS was, despite the result encouraging, the winning goal being scored 5 minutes from time. Sadly we conceded late goals in several games which cost us, as draws were turned into defeats thereby losing valuable points. Our best results of the season were two wins against newly promoted Airbus UK, a 4-1 away win followed by a 4-0 home win.

Unfortunately in the 4-0 win we played Leigh Shrimpton who was serving a ban picked up while playing for another side. We were unaware of this as the football authorities hadn’t informed us and it was to cost us dearly. They were found guilty of playing an ineligible player and were deducted 3 points which proved crucial as it left us bottom of the league with a couple of matches left. They were unable to recover these points on the field and an appeal against the loss of points fell on deaf ears.

Saturday can mean only one thing; Football. Everywhere around the world right people are flooding around football stadiums all anticipating three points for their team. It’s no different inside the Deeside Stadium as we look to bounce back after the honour of conquering the Deeside Fortress went to Aberystwyth town last week.We went into the game brimming with confidence with three consecutive wins behind us and Aber losing heavily in their last two games. However the feared bounce back of the seasiders became very real, as it was the away side that were off the mark first and were 2-0 up after 15 minutes.

The first half came to an end and the Nomads went in disappointed, not playing at all how we know they can. To get ourselves within any chance of the three points we had to come out strong in the second half and thankfully we did. Nomads put a lot more pressure on the visitors and came closest on the hour mark when Gary O Toole shot just wide. This soon grew to become a characteristic of the Nomads attacks, with perfect crosses being sent in only to be headed just over, just wide, or just sent away by the keeper. Eventually we did get the breakthrough, with Jamie Petrie hitting a stunning volley way past Mike Lewis. Unfortunately this came in stoppage time, so it was too little too late for the Nomads and Aber got a deserved three points.

It is arguable that the loss of three points is minor compared to the three match ban captain Craig Jones picked up as his reaction to a tackle earned a red card in a frustrating game for all Nomads. His charisma and power on the pitch will be missed over the next few weeks.

One positive of the game is that we saw an attendance of 165. Not as big as we aim for, but still a great figure compared to the gate for the Llanelli game. Lets keep on getting behind the lads and urging others to come down and get hooked by the excitement of the Welsh Premier League.

Two weeks ago Nomads were handed a trip back to Belle Vue via the League cup draw, and that match takes place this Tuesday. Fixtures between us and the Lilywhites always carry some tension and usually some great football, so please try and get down there to witness what I think we be a long deserved win against our rivals in their own back yard. Today we welcome our visitors Afan Lido, the Port Talbot based team who have taken this league by surprise after their promotion into the Welsh Premier, finishing a solid 9th last season against the odds, a feat we be ecstatic to achieve. There is also some possible vengeance to be had after last time we faced Lido it was in a welsh cup tie, where they got the better of a under prepared Nomads team to end our welsh cup dreams. Academy Update

Another great week for The AcademyA big weekend of action for the club and academy, which saw all bar one of our academy sides in action with games against The New Saints, Flint Town United, AFC Liverpool and Aberystwyth.

Our youngest groups the under 9s and 10s travelled to The New Saints on Saturday morning for what was an excellent day of football.

Both sides unfortunately came away defeated in very high entertaining games with lots of goals. The under 9s went down nine seven with goals coming from Domonic Jenkins 2, Sam Moore 2, Oliver Johnson 2 and Jack Spendlove. Matthew Atkinson was awarded man of the match.

The 10s also lost there game by a similar score line losing by just two goals in a game which was won 8-6 by The New Saints.

Our 11s got beat by four goals to one by Flint Town United with Leon Sumner scoring for the Nomads and man of the match going to Billy Unsworth.

Honours were even in the 12, 14 and 16 academy cup games at Flint Town United with a draw and a win for each clubs.

The under 12s drew their game 4-4 with all 4 Nomads goals coming from Coel Lambert with man of the match going to centre back Jack Jones.

Academy Update

Another great week of 4 academy camps which saw our U9s enjoy three fantastic training daysUnder 9s put through there paces in preparations for new 2012-2013 season.Like the previous three camps the under 9 players followed a programme focused on the following areas: Making it Count – (Finishing) Combining to Attack – (Passing) Winning the Battle – (Defending) NIKE SPARQ training – (agility, speed etc) Dominating the 1v1 – (individual skill)

As well as the sessions above all players also took part in three skills tests which focused on passing, control and dribbling. All players gained scores over these three tests based on how well they completed the task.

These three tests have been put together and have a handicap on them which will allow the younger and older players in the academy to be tested against one another.

A big congratulation to the skills school winner which was won by:

Jamie Brown who scored an impressive 600 points over the three tests. The most of any academy player at of our under 13, 12, 11 and 9 sides.

All training for the week was focused on the Manchester United 4v4 methods which saw all players finish sessions with this format of games, with different team and individual challenges through out.

Our 14s went down by two goals to nil in there game with Flint with man of the match going to Kai Oldfield who has progressed well this season in his full back role.

Our 16s were very strong recording a seven two victory with two goals each from Joe Jones, Kieran Gaul, Mike Nolan and a single from Lee Ludgate.

Our 15s pulled off another great performance and result beating a strong AFC Liverpool side by three goals to nil with first half strikes from Thomas Bibby and Andrew Jones with Ryan Bailey grabbing a third in the second half. Man of the match went to Ben Waddilove who was outstanding at centre of defense with great distribution through out.

Our 19s completed a busy Sunday with arguably one of strongest performances to date with a two nil victory over a very strong Aberystwyth side.

Goals came in the second half from Aled Reece and man of the match Jamie Wynne both scoring with well taken headers.

Unfortunately the only side not in action was our 13s after we were informed late Friday night that TNS could not play us after arranging the game with players unavailable.

4. Mark McGregorWe recently sat down with one of the only Player/Managers in the Welsh Premier League, as Mark McGregor gave us his thoughts ahead of The Nomads’ return to the top flight of Welsh football.

Mark, can you give us a little background as to where you first started to kick a football and how you career developed in your early days?I was brought up in Blacon, a quiet suburb just outside of Chester and started playing when I was 10, which by today’s standards is quite a late start. Blacon Youth were my first team and i played with them to their Under 16 team.

How did you get into the professional game?I became a YTS @ Wrexham for 2 years, before going pro with them in 1995 so the wages were near enough non-existent back then.

What was the highlight of your career?Probably playing in the 1997 FA Cup Quarter Final with Wrexham. We were praying for a big draw but ended up with chesterfield!! We lost 1 – 0 and they went on to play against Middlesbrough in the Semi Final at Old Trafford. The nearest i get there nowadays is when i take the Mrs. shopping at The Trafford Centre!

I played for Wrexham, Burnley, Blackpool, Port Vale and Altrincham, racking up over 550 League and Cup appearances, with a few goals here and there!

My only real injury came when I was at Burnley where a knee injury kept me on the sidelines for about 4 months, but when I came back, I was playing alongside ex Man Utd and Blackburn Rovers defender David May.We had a good partnership in defence for the rest of that season

As one of the only player/managers in the WPL how do you reconcile your managerial and your playing dutiesI love it! I’m not ready to stand on the sidelines full time yet and I find it a lot easier to connect with the players by playing alongside them rather than shouting from the sideline. I wouldn’t change it at all and love being the only Player/Manager in the Welsh Premier League.

Welsh Premier Review

BANGOR City and Prestatyn Town are the Welsh Premier pacesetters, topping the table with 13 points apiece after victories on Saturday.

The Seasiders were 2-1 winners over Bala Town at Maes Tegid in the live TV game while City overcame Afan Lido 4-1 at Nantporth. Lee Hunt celebrated his return from a three-match ban by volleying home an Ian Sheridan cross from the edge of the box against one of his former clubs. But Prestatyn were level when Andy Parkinson chested home a Ross Stephens shot at the far post and Stephens himself put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot just before the break after Mike Byron had fouled Paul O’Neill. The Lakesiders were unable to find a goal in the second period, leaving Colin Caton’s side still without a win and three points adrift at the foot of the table.

Bangor took a fifth-minute lead through Chris Jones, but Luke Borelli’s third goal of the season had Afan Lido level at half-time. But Les Davies restored the home lead and further goals from Jones and Damien Allen sealed the three points.

The New Saints remain in third after failing to score for the third consecutive game as they were held by Carmarthen Town in a goal-less affair at Richmond Park. Mark Aizlewood’s side mounted an excellent defensive performance to frustrate Craig Harrison’s side who are now winless in three.

Newtown were hammered 9-2 on their last visit to Stebonheath Park but gained revenge with a stunning 3-0 win over Llanelli. Second half goals from Ian Edmunds and Nicky Ward put the Robins in control before the Reds were reduced to eight men with the dismissals of Ashley Evans, Luke Bowen and Chris Venables by referee Andy Harms. Gareth Partridge then rubbed salt in the home wounds by adding the third goal in added time.

Port Talbot Town and Airbus UK Broughton shared eight goals in a game that was far from a thriller at the GenQuip Stadium. Some poor defending on both sides was responsible for most of the goals, with David Brooks and Jeff White both notching two for the Steelmen. The Wingmakers never led but responded with efforts from Wayne Riley, Glenn Rule, Ryan Wade with his fourth of the season and Jordan Johnson on his debut.
