LOWVELD NOMADS
(Founded 1996)
JUNE 2019
at Barberton Golf Club
THE NOMADS CREED
“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;
And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.”
from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)
From the Captain….
Our monthly game was played at a very well-prepared Barberton Golf Club on Sunday 9th June 2019. A heartfelt
thank you to the new Manager, Willie Müller, Club Captain, Frans te Water and all the staff for going out of their
way to make sure we were welcomed and really well-treated.
It was very nice to play with the Captain – we had great fun on the course – and a big congratulations to him for
winning the overall B-division! They put in a lot of effort to prepare the course for our visit and even cancelled
their normal Saturday afternoon Club competition to be ready for us… Well done Barberton and thanks for going
the extra mile!
Also, a huge thank you to the team from our Local Sponsor, Barberton Ford, for the drinks on the 5th Tee-box
and the braai-snacks on the veranda after the game! We have become accustomed to their social spirit and
appreciate their support tremendously. Please return the favour and support them wherever you can…
It was my privilege to induct THREE new members at prizegiving, Michael Ferri, Craig Strydom and Jason Hogg.
In his absence, Brian Hogg – Membership Ambassador – sent a special message to the Inductees, one of whom has
big shoes to fill… Welcome chaps, I trust you will have a long and successful Nomadic career…
Thanks to the Altar Bunnies for being on time to help me unpack the trailer – Chalmers Pagiwa, John Stephen,
Garth Snyman and Gary Botha. Sorry John, lighting does strike twice in our neck of the woods!
Thank you all for supporting Mary Kirby with the purchase of raffle tickets for Highland Gate. This is a great
sponsorship towards our annual Andrew Mentis fundraising efforts.
It is evident that smaller clubs do need our support, more and more, and I look forward to playing at Kambaku on
Sunday, 14th July. See you there everyone….
Until then, please take it easy and stay safe!

it’s what I can do for Nomads.

Here’s many years of happy
Nomadic moments, gents!
Bookies Report on Barberton Monthly Game
Betting was fairly brisk again and a total of R2230 was wagered on various players. Thankfully a visitor (none other than the Captain of Barberton) had an outstanding round of 41 points and no-one placed a bet on him. That is two months in a row that a visitor has won - so watch out for any visitors at the Kambaku game – it might be a good idea to cover your bets by placing R10 on every visitor. The Matchbox was won by Chief Marcus. No-one thought he
would repeat this and so no bets were placed on him.
A few successful bets were placed on the Best-Playing fourball and the Bunny Ears 4 -ball - which resulted in R600 being paid out and an overall profit of R1630 was made on
the day.
Currently R2880 has been transferred to the AMF
And a further R710 is in the Bookies float which
will end up in AMF so at this stage your bets have
brought in R3590 to AMF – THANK YOU.
Please support this initiative as it is a fun way of
raising money for AMF and you can also walk away
with a nice sum of money if you get lucky.
Thanks for your support thus far.

JULY GAME AT BARBERTON - another little Lowveld Gem.
Another month has gone and the time seems to really whizz by these days! Does it have anything to do with advancing age?
Here’s my theory for what it’s worth! In the old days when we were young, in times when the Dead Sea was just critical and in
the ICU, we could remember everything - what we had for breakfast, what we shot in a particular game last Wednesday , etc.
Now it’s a struggle to remember where we were yesterday, so we lose days at a time, hence the fact that we only remember
half of what we do and time’s going by at far too rapid a rate anyway!
Barberton was our last stop if my memory serves me correctly - and it was another great day! The club really went out of their
way to host us, even closing the course the day before to prepare it for us - which just illustrates how much they appreciate us
playing a monthly game on their course. Well done to them and as always, to the Barberton Ford team who provided eats and
drinks for us both on and off the course - a really fantastic effort - and huge thanks to Jean Coetzee and his team along with their
family members who supported them in turn.
I or perhaps my golf seems to be going backwards again after a fantastic start to the year, but that being said, I managed to
dodge the Matchbox again, and as a four-ball, we scraped in to avoid the Bunny Ears. Phew!!
Brandon Stone, whom I’m sure most of us will know from his Junior days and his Leopard Creek win when he brought the trophy
to show us as an expression of his appreciation to Nomads, has been writing as a Playing Editor for Compleat Golfer, and one
of the things that he wrote about recently was nutrition and what to eat and drink before and during a round. Allan Beeching may
be shocked to find out that Castle Lite is not the recommended meal before or during a round. He does drink 3 or 4 litres of
water during a round, but he leaves out the Barley and the Hops. He eats cashews and apples to keep his energy levels up
while mince on toast with an extra egg is apparently not on!!
In 1998 a golfer name P H Horgan was disqualified from a professional tournament after completing his round. His transgression
was not filling out the registration forms correctly before he teed off, so guys, please be aware of the ladies at our tables!
Ken Nagal, the 1960 Open winner, signed the card that his marker had filled in, but the marker had inadvertently put a 35 down
as his 18th hole score. The incorrect score thus gave him a 105 instead of a 70 - so when the ladies call you back to correct a
card, be thankful - be VERY thankful, even if all you want is to go and get a “cold one”!!
Jannie was in court after he and his wife decided to get divorced. The Judge looked at
the merits of the case and eventually said to Jannie “ I have looked at everything and I
am going to give your wife R25,000 a month”,
to which Jannie replied…..
“Thanks your Honour, and when I have some extra cash, I’ll give her some as well!
Keep swinging, and I’ll see you at Kambaku this coming Sunday…..
