The Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) Coach Developer Academy (NCDA) is a programme for those with experience in the training and education of sport coaches to help them enhance their skills and their coaching development programmes. It was established in 2014 as part of Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) ‘Sport for Tommorrow’ programme for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Proudly collaborating with the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE), NCDA provides blended learning opportunities for future coach developers. Creating coaching cultures that leads to positive experiences for everyone through sport is the vision that we have of the academy.

Who will benefit from the NSSU Coach Developer Academy?

A coaching culture in sport that leads to a positive experiences for all participants.

To foster future international ‘Coach Developers’ and to construct a community of coach developers

across the world.

“Coach developers are not simply experienced coaches or transmitters of coaching knowledge. They are trained to develop, support and chal-lenge coaches to go on honing and improving their knowledge and skills to provide positive and effective sport experiences for all participants…Coach developers play a crucial role not just in the initial formal training of coaches but also in the way coaches are educated, supported and nur-tured ‘on the job’” (ICCE, International Coach Developer Framework, 2014)

The NCDA will be of significant value to three types of organizations:

NCDA Vision and Mission

What are Coach Developers?

The government of Japan is committed to creating our future through the power of sport by reaching more than 10 million people in over 100 countries until 2020.With the Sport for Tomorrow Programme, Japan aims to be involved in the promotion of sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, including assistance to developing countries; training future sport leaders at the new international sport academies; and further protect and promote the values of sport by extending anti-doping initiatives globally.

An NSSU-ICCE Coach Developer is competent in the critical skills of facilitation, coach assessment, men-toring and coach education program design and evaluation; all the skills that will help you develop better coaches. The Academy offers a blended on-line and residential programme, including two one-week courses at NSSU in Tokyo (both courses are required), and on-line support and e-modules to help with preparation and assessment pre- and post-course.

Penny Crisfield has helped coach developers in a wide vari-ety of sports and in over 25 countries to develop the skills they need to help coaches at all levels of the coaches’s pathway. As chair of the ICCE Coach Developer Workgroup she is leading the devel-opment of this essential workforce.
