It’s 2016 and I can hardly believe how quickly the first half of my term as Club President has gone by! December was a short month for us in Rotary, but we had a flurry of activities: Recapping last month’s article, we ended 2015 with our Area 3 meeting on December 3 celebrating Past RI President Cliff Dochterman’s 90th birthday. This was a meeting not to miss, as PP Cliff was his usual witty and funny self! At 90 years old, he shows little sign of slowing down! Then on the evening of Dec. 3, we kicked off the holidays at Scott and Joy Chambers’ Victorian Christmas open house where we feasted on a bountiful potluck and closed out the evening singing Christmas carols in excellent Niles Rotary fashion; Espada Court was spectacular with the lights and decorations at all the homes. Thank you JD Eshelman and his staff for once again hosting a wonderful lunch for us at Harbor Light Church, where we were treated to the talents of the Fremont Christian jazz band Dixie Dominus, directed by Thomas Banuelos. Thank you Community Service Director Terri Landon and those who rang the Salvation Army Bell at Dale Hardware and Safeway at the Hub. At Dale, we brought in $526.10 and Safeway $629.23. At PP Steve’s lead we elected our newest board members. Congratulations to Sandy Stabile and Paul Andrus for being elected for the positions of Community Service Director and Club Administration Director. It is up to PE Angus to determine which positions they will fill. There was a huge round of applause for Rose Evernden-Andrade as she was named President Nominee 2017-2018. (continued on page 2)

Happy New Year! It’s 2016 and I can hardly believe how quickly the first half of my term as Club President has gone by! December was a short month for us in Rotary, but we had a flurry of activities:

Recapping last month’s article, we ended 2015 with our Area 3 meeting on December 3 celebrating Past RI President Cliff Dochterman’s 90th birthday.

On Track With President Lisa (continued) Our last meeting of the year was our traditional Christmas program with our own Richard King leading us in several favorite Christmas songs. It’s always a fun struggle to get through the 12 days of Christmas! Thank you PN Rose, Santa Steve, and all of Santa’s helpers at Pizza with Santa. The day was full of smiles and laughter to go with the presents that the 4 families received. Special thank you’s to Manuel & Karen Franco and their daughter, and to pony Priscella and horse Trigger; the day’s highlight is always the horse rides! Also a special thank yout to the photo elves – John & Joan Kimber, who have been doing the special family photographs from the beginning. It was truly a heartwarming day. Thank you PP Steve for planning our last social of 2015 and thank you AG Daren and PP Sandra Young for opening your beautiful home up to host this festive event. The wine selection was wonderful, the food was amazing, and the fellowship was that special Niles Rotary fellowship that we all treasure. I submitted my grant requests to the District, which was my last duty of 2015. When I went to PETS in March last year, I was given a total of $6,282 DDF to allocate for club projects in 2016-2017. I chose to continue the good works that PP Steve started, dividing the DDF into 3 separate grants. The first DDF grant request of $2,000 has been submitted for phase 3 of our ongoing project at Blacow Elementary School, our adopted Title One school here in Fremont. This year we will do additional landscaping and work on their playground. This will be another “hands on” project by Niles Rotarians and will be lead by Community Service Chair, Terri Landon. The 2nd District grant request is for $2,000, or $500 each for our 3 Interact Clubs and our Rotaract Club to do a Community Service Project of their own choosing. The projects will be organized and manned by the Interactors and Rotaractors themselves with help from Niles Rotarians. Their projects selected include going back to Graham School in Newark to do additional work on their playground; Washington High School Interact has planned to put together care packages for individuals in need to be distributed at the Centerville Free Dining Room. The 3rd grant request of $2,282 has been committed to the Area 3 WCS grant to help rebuild the DSET school in India, as well as to provide partial funding for Rich Godfrey’s project of shipping hospital equipment to the Matibabu Foundation in Ukwala, Kenya. Thank you again to PN Rose and all those that came out to help with Feed the Hungry on New Year’s Eve. It was a quiet evening in terms of meals served, but a relaxing evening of fellowship, which is what Niles Rotarians do so well! We had a table of Niles Rotarians at the special RI President’s dinner on January 3 at the Doubletree San Jose. President Ravi Ravindran spoke eloquently about how Rotary is a gift to the world; that message resonates with Niles Rotarians as we think of the aspects of community service that we provided this past month, and the many people who benefitted from our projects and service - the clients of the Salvation Army, the families served by Pizza with Santa, the people receiving dinner at Feed the Hungry. As President Ravindran said, “Rotary is a gift to you, as you are a gift to the world.” The final gift is the gift to all the Niles Rotarians who support and participate in everything we do. It was a whirlwind but amazing 2015. I can hardly wait to experience all that is ahead for us in 2016! Editor’s note: What are these acronyms - is President Lisa speaking Greek, or what? PP = Past President; PE = President-elect; PN = President Nominee; AG = Assistant Governor; PETS = President Elect Training Seminar; DDF = District Designated Funds; WCS = World Community Service. President Lisa

PIZZA WITH SANTA – Saturday December 19 Pizza with Santa: What is it? Project chairwoman Rose Evernden-Andrade writes: “Pizza with Santa was a brainstorm by the board in former Past President Dick Crist's year of 1998-1999. Dick wanted to do something fun for families in need and envisioned a kind of party where Rotarians could practice "Service Above Self" and bless others!! SO it began! We had a few bumps in the road initially trying to identify families to help and determine the best way to spend our money, but after about 3-4 years of trial and error we found a way to bless some very deserving families. Today we work with the City of Fremont to identify 5- 6 families for a total of 25 guests. We identify them in November and our very kind shopper Judy Zlatnik meets with each family to assess needs, favorite colors, favorite toys and of course favorite Princesses, Superheroes or Sports Teams. She then gets to work shopping for each individual of the family so we are able to provide for a variety of needs. On December 19th, 2015 work begins early and the night before to prepare the donated Centerville Dining Room into a festive space complete with a bounce house, crafts, and goodies for the whole family. Families begin the morning with crafting photo frames for the family photos that will be taken by the Kimbers; having a nice family photo is a new thing for many of these families. Kids then bounce off some energy in the bounce house. And THEN, the horses! The horse rides are provided by Manual Franco and his family; in earlier years, the Youngs and Haggs had provided horse rides. This is a very special treat for the families! WHY is this called Pizza with SANTA you may be thinking by now? Well, because when we are all done with gifts and with Niles Rotarians getting down to the task of helping the children put all the gifts together with, yes, some operation instruction required - PIZZA appears from Pizza Italia in Newark (which has been supporting us for years), and pizza lunch is served. We meet some amazing, humble, thankful, and excited people. We have blessed the families over the years with everything from toys, bikes, clothes, car repair, tires, haircuts, cell phones, household items, and a sewing machine and material for a 17-year-old young woman who designed her cloths but wanted to be able to sew them. It is an amazing morning and we are given the opportunity to bless so many, but I think the greatest blessings are received by the Niles Rotarians as they see the looks of joy on our faces. It’s an amazing morning and I hope you all will be able to spend some time with us. Come for an hour or so or come for the entire party. The more the merrier. Well there you have it Pizza with Santa - I truly hope you can join us. Christmas blessings to all!” Rose Evernden-Andrade

ALL ABOARD NILES ROTARY MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE President Lisa has announced this year’s membership challenge – All Aboard …!! Let’s work to keep Niles Rotary On the Right Track. Here is basic information about the challenge. 1. Bring a guest to lunch - that is the most important thing we can do - our experience shows that once visitors see what Niles Rotary does and experience our fellowship, they are primed to be invited to be club members. 2. The club pays for 2 lunches for visitors - after that, you can work it out with a repeat guest (whether you pay or they pay or share payments). 3. There will be a way to keep track of who brings guests - there are special name tags that you would retrieve from the guest as they leave the meeting; those name tags get put into a drawing for a special bonus at the end of the challenge. The more guests you bring, the more name tags with you as the host go into that drawing. 4. The challenge runs through March 31. 5. Prize: for the Friendliest Rotarian (Rotarian bringing the most guests), the Friendliest team (most guests from the team), and the Rotarians sponsoring new members - a wine paired catered dinner at Fremont Flowers Garden Courtyard, hosted by President Lisa and Dirk.
