Problems of money, property, and authority may easily divert us from our primary spiritual aim. We think, therefore,
that any considerable property of genuine use to AA should be separately incorporated and managed, thus dividing the
material from the spiritual. An AA group, as such, should never go into business. Secondary aids to AA, such as clubs or
hospitals which require much property or administration, ought to be incorporated and so set apart that, if necessary,
they can be freely discarded by the groups. Hence such facilities ought not to use the AA name. Their management
should be the sole responsibility of those people who financially support them. For clubs, AA managers are usually pre-
ferred. But hospitals, as well as other places of recuperation, ought to be well outside AA-and medically supervised. While
an AA group may cooperate with anyone, such cooperation ought never go so far as affiliation or endorsement, actual or
implied. An AA group can bind itself to no one.
FREE There is an “old” wooden desk in the CSO office that
needs a home. Anyone interested may stop by the office and
check it out. It will require a truck and some strong men to
carry it out of the office. Your help is appreciated!

Dr. Bob on Prayer:
"Dr. Bob would explain prayer by telling how
the camels in a caravan would kneel down in
the evening, and the men would unload
their burdens. In the morning, they
would kneel down again, and the men
would put the burdens back on. 'It's the
same with prayer,' Dr. Bob said. 'We get
on our knees to unload at night. And in
the morning when we get on our knees
again, God gives us just the load we are
able to carry for that day.'" c. 1980, Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers, page 229
Seniors In Sobriety meetings have now arrived in Texas. Dallas has the first Seniors (over 60) in
Sobriety AA meeting in Texas. The first “Carrying the Message to the Older Alcoholics” meeting took
place during the 11th International AA Convention in Minneapolis in July, 2000. This meeting was a
nod from the World Service Organization that this is an issue that deserved attention and discussion.
Seniors in Sobriety meetings are springing up all over the country, from Colorado to New York to Florida
and elsewhere. Is it now time to have a meeting here in San Antonio?
There is a “Seniors In Sobriety International Conference. This year the conference is in San Diego on
September 5th-8th. Information available at the CSO office.

Reprint from The AA Grapevine, Inc., August 1995 Vol. 52 No. 3
Second interview in a series of articles on authors of Big Book stories
Interview With the Author of "Stars Don’t Fall” Felicia M. is eighty-nine years old and has been sober for over fifty-one years; she joined the Fellowship in the fall of 1943, when it was only eight years old. Her story, "Stars Don't Fall," is in the Third Edition of the Big Book.
On a clear cold afternoon last January, the managing editor of the Grapevine and an editorial assistant drove up
to the small town in Connecticut where Felicia M. lives. We found her modest house on a quiet back lane. Several
big evergreens were in the front yard; in the backyard, a bird feeder hung from a bare tree. Inside, her house
was cozy. A whole row of cookbooks filled a shelf over the kitchen door. The walls were hung with pictures--
western scenes with men and women on horseback, a painting by a grandson, a large oil by a well-known ab-
stract painter of the nineteen fifties, and some watercolors by Felicia herself, who began painting during one pe-
riod when she couldn't write (Felicia is a professional writer). The three of us sat in Felicia's small book-lined liv-
ing room, where the winter light filtered through the draperies, and Felicia served us coffee and cookies as we
talked about AA and her recovery from alcoholism.
In her Big Book story, Felicia tells about the turbulent times of her drinking: from her chauffeured "self-guided"
tour of Europe's wine countries to being the down-and-out habitué of a Greenwich Village bar, where the other
customers took to moving their stools to avoid her. Drinking wasn't a pleasant experience for her; it was, she
wrote, like getting a "tap on the head with a small mallet." Felicia told us, "I had low self-esteem and behaved
accordingly--and so of course I got into trouble all the time." Her analyst was one of the earliest members of the
psychiatric profession to learn about Alcoholics Anonymous; Felicia explained, "Bill had addressed a bunch of
shrinks, you see, and my analyst heard him. She said to me, 'You've been coming here either drunk or hungover
for a year. And I think these people have something.'" The psychiatrist gave Felicia the Big Book to read and
sent her to meet a man named "Mr. W."
Bill W. suggested that Felicia meet Marty M., the first woman to get--and stay--sober in AA. Marty became Feli-
cia's sponsor: "She was my sponsor until the day she died. I still miss her very much." When Felicia was sober
less than a year, she wrote a short piece for the first issue of this magazine, in June 1944 (she was then known
as Felicia G.). Over the years, she wrote a number of articles for the Grapevine and worked for a time, without
pay, reading and editing manuscripts. During the 1970s, she was active on the Grapevine's Editorial Advisory
Board.
Felicia has written both novels and nonfiction. She published several novels while she was still drinking, as re-
counted in the Big Book. She said, "Of course I used to write when I was drunk--my writing was quite a mess.
Since getting sober, I've written some things I'm not ashamed of." How did she write her Big Book story? "I was
down in Florida, and it just came out--I didn't correct at all; it just poured out of me."
"My life," Felicia said, "is so much better in sobriety. The main thing is that I believe in God and I can appeal to
him and I can get results." She added, "If I hadn't stopped drinking, I'd be dead: if you had buried me with an
acorn in my mouth, I'd have raised an oak tree by now."

AA Cooperates With Professionals
Informational Workshop
Sunday, June 30th
1 p.m.-3 p.m.
Location: CSO Fellowship Room, 8802 Tradeway
Open to all in the San Antonio metropolitan area, including groups, GSRs,
DCMs, and members of PI/CPC committees
We'll explore old and new ways of taking the A.A. message to nonalcoholic professionals and future professionals -- all
while keeping within our traditions.
Keynote speaker: Tommy F., SWTA 68 PI/CPC chair
Brief discussion by others
Why is this important?
"Such people often meet the alcoholic in places where AA is not present. Through professionals, alcoholics may
be reached who might otherwise never find the program, or they may be reached sooner with the help of in
formed non-AAs." -- Cooperation with the Professional Community Workbook
What counts as a "professional"? Anybody who might deal with the suffering alcoholic during the course of work: mem-
bers of the clergy; health care professionals (doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.); judges; attorneys; proba-
tion and parole professionals; teachers and other educators; athletic coaches; social workers; employers or employee as-
sistance workers; police officers; journalists; bartenders, and more!
At the conclusion of Sunday's workshop, we will have a brief planning committee meeting for our involvement with the
national conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), to be held
in San Antonio Oct. 3-6, 2013.
Remember: From the very beginning, nonalcoholic have played a vital role in our fellowship. We humbly remember Dr.
Silkworth, Sister Ignatia, and the Reverend Sam Shoemaker.

Group History

Archives
The Archives Committee has begun the collection of Group histories. They will collect background
information on all current groups and groups that have folded in the San Antonio Metropolitan Area.
The “Book of Groups” will be available in the future for AA members to come to the archives and read
how their group began.
Information on your group may be given to the Archives by email or in written form. A picture of the front
of your meeting house or a picture on the inside of your meeting room would be appropriate. Please do
not include pictures of your members.
The Archives Committee meets monthly on the second Monday of each month at 6pm at the Fellowship
Room at 8802 Tradeway, San Antonio, TX 78217.
A Day in Recovery is a San Antonio tradition that is now in its 12th year. Each year this one-day event features a single speaker or speaker team to focus on a particular aspect of AA. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, A Day in Recovery at the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church will feature “The Big Book Experience” with Katie & Charlie P. from Austin. This husband-and-wife team has a dynamic presentation that is focused on the solution. Unlike regular speaker meetings or conferences featuring multiple speakers, A Day in Recovery maximizes one speaker’s experi-ence, strength and hope on a specific subject in an informational yet entertaining fashion. The presentation is conversational, not classroom, and the day provides many opportunities to enjoy the fellowship of others on this happy road. A continental breakfast is provided as well as snacks and limitless coffee throughout the day. Lunch is on your own, and most attendees go in groups to the many restaurants that are located nearby. At breaks there are drawings for raffle prizes and time for a chat or a smoke. The lineup wraps up with a question-and-answer session that always proves to be thought-provoking and educational. This year American Sign Language interpreters will be on-site for the entire event. The venue is fully ADA compliant, and we hope to accommodate all who wish to attend. Previous speakers have included Jack C. - “A Design for Living that Really Works”, Tom I. - “Living with Spiritual Principles”, Polly P. - “Emotional Sobriety” and Bob D. - “How to Recover from a Spiritual Malady.
Look for the bright yellow flyer in and around the rooms or contact [email protected] and we’ll gladly email one to you. Discounted pre-registrations ($12) may be mailed to the address on the flyer and are also being accepted at the Central Service Office. Registration on-site the day of the event ($15) is available, quick to complete and opens at 9:15 a.m. Alamo Heights United Methodist Church is located at 825 E. Basse Rd at the corner of E. Basse Rd and Treeline Park, near the Quarry shopping center.
A Day in Recovery planning committee is seeking volunteers who would like to be of service the day of the event. There are a variety of different ways to help us make the event a success. If you are available to help on Saturday, September 28th, please contact Laura at 253-583-6508 or email [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you this year!
