Welcome and the long gallery

Tonight we are raising funds to transform the Australian Museum’s Long Gallery.

The Long Gallery is Australia’s oldest gallery and has undergone many transitions throughout its 160-year history. It is now being transformed to create a contemporary tribute to its former glory. It will showcase rare and fascinating items from the Museum’s vast collection including prized skeletons, extinct mammals, rare insects, ancient minerals and items from the internationally-renowned Indigenous and Pacific collections. The heritage space will receive a contemporary redesign with multimedia, encouraging visitors to explore the collections at an intimate level.

Thank you for joining us. I encourage you to help us create the ‘must-see’ gallery in the region. Please dig deep.

Diccon LoxtonChairAustralian Museum Foundation

about the australian Museum

Welcome to The Night at the Museum, the third annual Australian Museum Foundation Gala Dinner.

Established in 1827, the Museum is Australia’s first museum and one of its foremost scientific research, educational and cultural institutions. It is the trusted guardian of the nation’s largest and oldest natural science and cultural collection with more than 18 million objects – and it is constantly developing and adding to the collection.

When displayed these objects can educate and inspire present and future generations. But only a small part of the collection is on display. The collection is available as an invaluable resource for researchers as a record of Australia’s and the Pacific region’s biodiversity and indigenous cultures. And the collection is not the full story. There is much more to the Museum, across its research, educational and scientific activities.

The Foundation exists solely to support the Australian Museum. Since 2005, it has provided close to $2 million in grants for the Museum to acquire important cultural and scientific objects, to undertake ground-breaking research, to mount scientific expeditions and to develop and implement innovative educational and community programs.
