April 25, 2016 - Minutes of the Indianapolis Coin Club Meeting. Open – Club President, Michael White, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. 25 people at-tended and signed in. We met at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2100 East 71st St. Visitors – There were no visitors. The Attendance prize was a 1947 Booker T. Washington Half Dollar donated by Vinton Dove. The Secretary’s report and the Treasurer’s report were accepted as published in the Planchet. Committee reports – Jim Sukup reported that he acquired the two volume “Cherrypickers Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins” for the Library. Also, Joe and Louise Bol-ing donated two new books, “Silent Witnesses: Civilian Camp Money of WWII,” and “Comprehensive Catalog of US Paper Money.” Old Business – Michael White brought more ICC “business Cards” for the members to hand out to potential visitors/members. New Business – None, except for Kill Reports: Michael White acquired two steel counterfeit Morgan Dollars, a 1887-CC and a 1901-CC. The Educational Program – The Club’s oldest WWII veteran, Lyle Pelkin, 94 years old, was the evening’s speaker. He told of his experiences in the U.S. and Europe during World War II. He joined the Army in September, 1942, and at his first opportunity he applied for OCS (Officer Candidate School). He went through the program twice, passing both times, but there were so many people trying to become officers that he was never granted a commission. So the Army made him a Corporal. He was sent many places in the U. S., including Yuma, AZ, San Antonio, TX, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Alabama, and Fort Benning, GA. He was in the Infan-try, the Army Air Corps, the paratroopers and back to the infantry. At one point he caught pneumonia. Finally he was sent with the infantry to La Havre, France, then western France, Northern France, and in March of 1945 he was at the Maginot Line. Then he was sent to Frank-fort, Germany, then with Patton’s tank units to Czechoslovakia, Austria, and to Bavaria. He carried a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) as a part of a rifle team most of that time, and final-ly became a part of the Army of the Occupation. His presentation was absolutely captivating – at least to the Secretary! After the Break. the Attendance Drawing was won by our President, Michael White, and the 50/50 Drawing was won by Dennis DeBruhl. Auction –Joe Boling ran the auction. Assisting were Bob Bettcher, Donn Wray, Michael White and Vinton Dove. The meeting was Adjourned at 8:33 PM. Respectfully submitted, Vinton Dove, Secretary

Editor’s Note At last month’s meeting we decided that rather than have an educational speaker this month, we would invite the membership to discuss their own favorite coins, basically a “show & tell”. While this was done in the past, it has been some time, so we will be kind of feeling out way through the process. The idea is to bring in one or two numismatic related items, and speak about them for a few minutes. After speaking, the coins can be passed around or placed on the front table for viewing. If you are not an ANA member, now might be the perfect time to join or renew. I had been put-ting off and putting off renewing my membership, when I saw an article advertising ANA’s 125th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, they are offering a 2016 American Silver Eagle graded MS 69 by NCG with a special American Numismatic Association label for anyone who joins or renews with a platinum membership. For me that was a no-brainer, as I had been planning to renew, and ended up with the slabbed ASE as well as a years worth of The Numis-matist mailed to my house. I’m not certain how long this offer will last, so I advise you not to delay! Lastly, it pains me to announce the passing of ICC member Siegmund Haider earlier this month. Siegmund was a pleasure to be around, and I always enjoyed hearing him recount his travels to his native Austria. He will be missed. Andy Nahrwold Editor
Coins of the month Very Rare Canadian Coins
This month’s Coin of the month is a selection of five very rare Canadian coins. Each of these coins has a known population of less than 280 piec-es, some a few as two known. The first coin examined is the 1921 half dollar. This coin has a reported mintage of over 200,000. Due to lack of demand for half dollars, this coin was never released. In 1929 when demand rose the remaining inventory of this coin was melted along with some from 1920. The recovered silver was then struck into 1929 coins. About 75 pieces are known coming from sales of specimen sets and individual coin sold at the mint. The reason for the melting was to not confuse the public by issuing past dated coins. The Charlton catalog values this coin from between $35,000 and $85,000 in grades from VG to AU. Specimen coins are valued between $75,000 and $150,000 in grades SP63 to 65. The next four coins are from 2000. That year the mint experimented with a multi ply steel alloy. During that year Canada issued a set of millennium quarters. Each month a different reverse was used. The regular alloy was pure nickel but some October and December coins were struck in the new alloy. About five October and two December coins are known. There are also two known 2000 P Caribou reverse quarters known in the new alloy. These coins are so rare no value is given in the Charlton catalog. Lastly, another 2016 coin will be discussed. This time it’s the half dollar. At the opening of the Winnipeg plating facility about 276 desk clocks were giv-en to select attendees. The cover of the clock contained a 2000 P half. When the people who received the clock realized how rare the coin was, they removed the coin to sell to collectors. Today the coin is valued be-tween $7,000 and $8,000. Tuesday, December 6, 2016 – NO MEETING - I.C.C. Holiday Banquet
*For 2016 we are continuing the 'Attendance Prize' drawing at each monthly meeting as an added in-centive for all I.C.C. members to attend as many meetings as possible and to encourage new member-ship. Everyone attending each regular monthly meeting will receive a prize ticket when they arrive at
the meeting and sign in at the greeting table. The prize each month will be a 90% silver U.S. Half Dol-lar (or equivalent or greater 90% silver content coin) The I.C.C. Board members and officers as well as
several I.C.C. members chose to act as sponsors and donate the monthly prizes rather than funding them from our budget. You'll find the monthly prize sponsor listed below each monthly meeting date
above. You'll just have to show up to see what you may win! Please keep this in mind each month; regardless of who is giving the monthly program and/or the topic, we owe it to that person and the membership to remain quiet and pay attention during the program. It’s important that we respect the knowledge that is being shared with
us as well as the time and effort the speaker is donating to our club. The same rules should apply to our monthly auctions; please remain quiet and pay attention.
Thank you.
