The use of visualisers in education has been one of the great success stories over the last few years, being used for everything from showing text books and pupils’ work, to fine art techniques and recording school plays. There’s now more choice and more functionality than ever before – whatever your budget.

Although not strictly a visualiser, the Hue HD Webcam has proved enormously popular, giving good quality at a low price, and a great introduction to using visual technology in the classroom. But there’s also great value to be had further up the scale, and the new Optoma DC300i combines huge pose-ability with the kind of image quality you’d expect at twice the price.

However, one of the most exciting breakthrough products has been the

Elmo L-12, which allows annotation even without the use of a PC. Remarkably, you just need to plug in the CRA-1 wireless tablet device, and images and live video can be annotated over even if the visualiser is plugged directly into the projector/display.

This allows simple integration into the classroom – and if you’re one of the many schools looking into ways of using iPad or Android devices in teaching, this is a great product. The fact that it stands alone, means no software, network integration, docking or any of the other barriers to use exist.

Simply turn it on and use it. In fact if you have no way of connecting your iPad to a display, simply pop in under the visualiser, it looks fantastic, and you can annotate directly over the top. Brilliantly simple!

Visualisers

We’ve become so used to interactive whiteboards that it can be sometimes overlooked that they continue to advance, none more so than in the way that we interact with them. It used to be that if you wanted to use a pen, you choose Promethean or the RM ClassBoard, and if you wanted to use your finger, then SMART was your weapon of choice. But all this has changed now, with finger touch available on the Promethean 500 board series, and vice versa a pen with SMART’s top-end models.

Choice also now extends beyond simply one interactive whiteboard or another, with many other options available. One of the biggest products of the last few years has been Epson’s interactive projector range, which offers interactivity on whatever surface it is projecting onto. RM Education supply it with the

excellent Easiteach Next Generation software, providing a complete interactive solution at a fraction of the cost of a full interactive whiteboard installation.

There are also alternatives that embrace flexible learning, like the RM VerTable Interactive. It combines the Epson interactive projector with a table/projection surface that can be used in table top or whiteboard mode, and height adjusted in both – giving you group or whole-class mode, and full portability.
