Who are we?
The Society for Creative
Anachronism (SCA) is an
international non-profit vol-
unteer educational organiza-
tion. The SCA is devoted to
the research and re-creation
of pre-seventeenth century
skills, arts, combat, culture,
and employing knowledge of
history to enrich the lives of participants through
events, demonstrations, and other educational presen-
tations and activities. The SCA's "Known World"
consists of 20 kingdoms and over 30,000 members
around the globe.
In the SCA, a Kingdom is a
large regional chapter of the
parent organization, SCA,
Inc. Each Kingdom is ruled
by a King and Queen. There
are 20 SCA Kingdoms world-
wide. The Kingdom of AE-
thelmearc was founded in 1997. AEthelmearc encom-
passes all of West Virginia, most of Pennsylvania,
and Central and Western New York.
The Barony of the
Rhydderich Hael is the local
group of the SCA in the
Kingdom of AEthelmearc
and covers the areas in and
around Buffalo, NY. We look
forward to meeting you!
The Canton of Beau Fleuve is
located within the borders of
The Barony of the
Rhydderich Hael and is locat-
ed in the Niagara Falls and
surrounding regions.

The Baron and Baroness
Greetings to the Barony! Words cannot express how won-derful it was to see so many faces old and new who came to Investiture. Getting to see all of your faces from the thrones is an honor and privilege and we hope to serve you well. Thank you again to all of the staff for all of your hard work to pull off a successful, fun-filled event. And thank you to Their Excellencies Magnus and Miriel for all of your hard work. We hope that you enjoy your retirement. We are also heartened to have seen so many join us for the future Ice Dragon planning meeting held by Lord Rhys. The festival is an important part of the work we do for the Barony and the Kingdom at large. We look forward to the process of making the best of this event for years to come, and the participation of all who lend a hand. Padraig and Juliana
From the Chronicler
Hello Haelies! Welcome to another issue of “The Ice Dragon”! This issue is packed with a large backlog of Baronial meeting minutes, court reports, and updated information on Baronial officers. If you are a Ba-ronial officer or run a practice/meeting, please check your information and see if it is correct. Send any corrections to me and I will make changes in the next issue. I am still seeking a second deputy to learn the job, and my goal is to have that person take over for me when my term ends early next year. If you are interested in learning more about this position, please contact me and we can discuss the requirements and skills that are needed. I am willing to train interested people in the SCA policy side of the job as well in the publication process. The only hard requirement is you will need a computer, access to the internet, and a software program that can handle desktop publishing. Finally, a bit of fun news. Recently the results of the Master William Blackfox Awards for A.S. 52 were announced. The William Blackfox awards recognize excellence in the work of Chroniclers and newsletter contrib-utors in the Society. I am proud to announce the Ice Dragon was named the winner of “Best Special Issue” for The Ice Dragon-Baronial Elec-tion Edition (2018). The Ice Dragon was also nominated for (but did not win) “Best Layout and Design”. I am certainly honored to win this category for a second time, but when it comes to making a special edi-tion newsletter it is the contributors not the Chronicler who make this newsletter possible. We all share in this honor. Thank you! Magnus

Court Reports
Baronial Investiture/40th
Anniversary, Rhydderich
Hael - Magnus and Miriel.
An account of the final court of
Magnus and Miriel, Baron and
Baroness of the Barony of the
Rhydderich Hael in the Kingdom
of AEthelmearc, held at the Baro-
nial Investiture/40th Anniversary , the 1st day of December
in the 53rd year of the Society (2018 in the Common
year) in the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael. Reported by
THLady Zofia Kowalewska, Ice Dragon Pursuivant.
Their Excellencies welcomed all to share in the day and
thanked them for joining them in their final court.
Some old business needed to be attended . Although not pre-
sent, it was their Excellencies’ wish to induct THLady
Brigette de Sainte Mere-Église into the Order of the
Golden Bee in absentia to recognize her for her talent on the
hammered dulcimer, her scribal works and her bardic
works. Scroll by Baroness Rosamund von Glinde and
THLord Padraig O’Brandubh.
THL Cynwulf Rendell and THL Eleanore Godwin asked
for a brief moment of their Excellencies’ time. Gifted to
their Excellencies was a little “retirement land and home”.
They also asked to induct new Hounds into the pack. Gaston,
Josephine, Astride and Dark Oak were welcomed and
asked to wear the Hound’s badge.
Baron Magnus asked THL Cynwulf Rendell and THL
Eleanore Godwin to remain. Because of these two, our Ar-
chery community is now 39 strong and growing. Baron Mag-
nus gathered the broken arrows of the Hael Hounds and turn
then into favors and presented the Hael Hounds the favors.
Their Excellencies next wished
to thank a few individuals. In
the Words of Baron Magnus
“The story originates with our
good friend THL Wolfgang
Starcke. At one of our many
events, when the time came to
set up the Baronial thrones we
discovered that some of the
wooden pegs had gone missing.
Wolfgang made his way into the
woods and collected sticks that
he broke into pieces and used as pegs so the thrones could be
assembled. To me this simple act of service exemplified what
service means in the Society. How small acts of service sup-
port everything that we do and stand for. As I prepared to
step down I discovered that several of these small sticks re-
mained in the thrones bags. It was then I decided that these
should be made into relics to honor Wolfgang and the service
he gave.”
Those honored by Her Excellency Miriel:
Lord Joe the Silent, Mistress Geirny Thoryrimsdot-
tir, THL Zofia Kowalewska.
Those honored by His Excellency Magnus:
The Dow Family (Lord Chebe, Lady Natsu, & Lady
Kaido), Lady Thalia Papillon, Baron Rhiannon
Elandris
Lord Fearghus mac Eoin was then asked to come forward
and ask to hold the Champions ready for the Incoming Excel-
lencies.
Minamoto Roku-i Sakurako and Lady Natsu
(represented by Lord Chebe) were called for th to receive
their severance pay for all the work done. Each were
thanked and presented with a 5lb bag of rice which should
help sustain their families for some time. Those who served

their Excellencies were released.
Being no further business, the final court of Magus and
Miriel was closed.
Baronial Investiture/40th Anniversary,
Rhydderich Hael - Padraig and Juliana.
An account of the court of Padraig and Juliana, Baron and
Baroness of the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael in the King-
dom of AEthelmearc, held at the Baronial Investiture/40th
Anniversary , the 1st day of December in the 53rd year of
the Society (2018 in the Common year) in the Barony of the
Rhydderich Hael. Reported by THLady Zofia Kowalewska,
Ice Dragon Pursuivant with the assistance of Noble Rhys
Penbras ap Dafydd
Morning Court:
Their Excellencies wished to see Lord Chebe and Lady
Simonetta and THLord Cynwulf Rendell and installed
them as Captain of the Guards (Sheriff) and Head Retain-
er and the Hounds as guards.
Then, the Senechal, Exchequer, Knight Marshall and Pursui-
vant were asked to remain in their positions and all agreed.
The Champions were then asked to present themselves and
asked to continue to serve and take their place in court. All
agreed and stood as the Rightful Baronial Champions.
Baron Padraig and Baroness Juliana addressed the populace
and thanked them for attending as it not only their Investi-
ture, but the Barony’s 40th Birthday. They asked all to enjoy
the day, the food and the stabbing.
Court was suspended.
Court was reopened and Their Excellencies sought Lord Joe
the Silent. For all of his years suppor ting the Barony and
as a Baronial Guard and as an example of quiet, thoughtful
courtesy, he was added to the Noble Union of Lords and La-
dies. Scroll by Baroness Rosemund (i), Riobard (w), Mistress
Liadhain.
The two Hael Stones were given to Baroness Anastasie de
Lamoure and Giuseppina Michele da Canal.
Court was suspended.
Court was reopened and their Excellencies addressed the
populace thanking all for attending. They then called for-
ward the autocrats for the event - Mistress Tiercelin and Bar-
on Rhiannon and thank them for all the hard work to put
this special event together.
Don Behrend von Elmendorf was called forward and
thanked for helping with the Rapier Activities
Their Excellencies had words with Baroness Rosamund von
Glinde. For her work as a Scr ibe and all her “subtleties”
she was named the newest member to the Order of the Gold-
en Bee. Scroll by THLady Zofia Kowalewska
THLady Meredyth Maskmaker was called and for her
decades of quiet service to the barony, she was added to the
Venerable Order of the Ice Dragon. Scroll by Baroness
Ekaternia Volkova.
It was then the wish of their Excellencies that Lord Abdulla
al Rashid be presented. For his prowess in archery, fenc-
ing, and heavy, he was named to the Order of the Dragon’s
Combatant. Scroll by Mistress Sthurrim Caithnes.
Armiger Fuego
was called to stand
before their Excel-
lencies. For their
enthusiasm as a
fencer, and helping
out at events, Fuego
was added to the
Order of the Drag-
on’s Concordium.
Scroll is a Work in
Progress by
THLady Brigette
de Sainte Mere-
Église
and THLady Zo-
fia Kowalewska
Lady Biota Merme asked for a moment of time in cour t
and presented their Excellencies and Her Majesty the pro-
ceeds from the Auction to be added to the coffers for Travel
needs.
As a piece of business, Their Excellencies of Thescorre,
Baron Eldjarn and Baroness Dubheasa were asked to
come forward. The contract was presented and agreed upon
that Baronial Champs this coming year will be a shared event
in Thescorre and the Hael will host the following year.
Being no further business, court was closed.

SCA Largess Ideas
By, Baroness Juliana Rosalia Dolce di Siena, OP
At the Baronial 12th Night festivities, we made the request
for items to add to a gift basket for Delftwood's Investiture
on February 9th. I was reminded that not everyone might
know what makes good/useful largesse gifts. I've compiled a
list with some notes. A pdf copy will be available in the files
section here as well.
Items that are hand-
made and period, peri-
od-plausible or used to
disguise modern items
are wonderful and
very much appreciat-
ed. Also, include your
name and with the
item. The retainers
will thank you for not
having to try and get
that information on the
fly.
This is not a be-all,
end-all list. The Face-
book “SCA Largesse” group has lots of ideas and many of us
have Pinterest boards with links to largesse items. If gifting
items to specific people, if they have a website (most Royal
reigns will have one) check there for items that they like/
want/need for largesse. If not sure, you can always ask your
Baron/Baroness or someone that knows the recipient for ide-
as. You can include items mean for the recipients to use per-
sonally or items that they can use to gift to people.

behind on several things. The reign is going out like a
lion (no pun intended). As always please send submis-
sions or articles, news, art, and photography to your lo-

second deputy with the intention of grooming that per-
son to replace me at the end of my term (March 2019) I

Hael Champs 2019:
Baroness Ekat: At the Rhydder ich Hael business
meeting is was voted to approach the Barony of
Thescorre to see about holding a joint Champs Event. I
went to Thescorre and this is the bid that they approved
for their Champs event and we are welcomed to join
them. There has not been a discussion of sharing of costs
and profits yet, but I would propose that we do a 50/50
split of both costs and profits. There would also need to
be coordination of the champions from each barony to
determine the tournament styles as both Baronies have
the tradition of the outgoing champion designing the
tournament for the incoming. I told the autocrat for
Thescorre that our meeting is November 6th and we
would discuss it then. Please either come to the event or
comment here on any thoughts or concerns.
Eleanore Godwin: Expressed concern about having
to hold A&S outside and felt it would be better to run
our own event.
It was suggested by several people that this issue could
be corrected by providing the Baronial pavilion as well
as the possibility of reschedule A&S in the event of bad
weather.
Mistress Cori: Feels the combined event is a good
idea. Suggested that the Hael hosts a combined event
next year and that this proclamation be made formal in
Hael/Thescorre Champs court this year.

and update the Barony at the next meeting.

thing, please give it a go. Even if the office you want to
try already has a deputy, I am sure extra hands would not
be turned down. Next meeting will be on February 6th.
Thank you for all your hard work to make this Barony
the happening place it is.
Ruadh (“Red”) I donated a ceremonial sword to the Bar-
ony to be used as the current Baron and Baroness see
fit.
This is a personal donation, however the sword origi-
nates from the land of Rising Waters, my homeland. -
Ruadh. (“Red”)
Meeting closed.
