Middle School Basketball Tryouts Date Change
Middle School Basketball tryouts will be held October 19, 20 and
21. Tryouts will begin immediately after school. Students in 7th
and 8th grades who wish to try out for basketball should turn in
their physical forms to Mrs. Buckner by Monday, October 10.
Athletics physicals are valid for one calendar year and must be
on file at school before students are allowed to participate in
tryouts.
Girls’ tryouts will be 2:45-4:15 each afternoon and boys’
tryouts will be 4:30-5:45. A study hall in the MS Computer Lab
will be open for the boys beginning at 2:30 if they choose to stay
after school instead of going home and then coming back for
tryouts. Girls should be picked up promptly at 4:15 and boys
should be picked up promptly at 5:45 each day.
The Day Yosef Came to School
(MS Athletics Pep Rally)
On Friday, September 30, our 3rd-8th grade students participated in a pep rally to recognize our Middle School athletes for softball, volleyball and basketball. Special guests from ASU Athletics joined us. Ila and K’Lynn, members of ASU’s Women’s Track and Field Team, and Yosef, ASU Mountaineer mascot, were our special guests for the fun event. Ila and K’Lynn talked with our students about what it takes to be an athlete at the collegiate level and stressed good study habits and grades. Yosef is a man of very few (no!) words, but he sure did show his enthusiasm by participating
in some “dance off” contests with our own mascot, Paul the Patriot, and our MS athletes. We appreciate the ASU Athletics Department’s support of our school and
our MS athletes.
Go Patriots! Go Mountaineers!
Bring a Vet to School Day
Our annual Veterans Day Celebration, Bring a Vet to
School, will be Thursday, November 10th at 8:30. The
invitation is part of this edition of The Community
Connection. Please feel free to make copies for veterans
you know and encourage them to RSVP by November
4th so that we will know how many guests to expect.
WALKERS/RUNNERS NEEDED!!!!!
Parkway School’s Student Council is hosting the 2nd annual Patriot Pride 5K on Saturday, October 22 at 9am on the beautiful Greenway in Boone. A
goal has been set for 100 participants! Please consider registering to participate. They would
appreciate you sharing information about this even in your places of work and with family members.
Money raised from the Patriot Pride 5K will support our school and food pantry, help purchase trash
cans for our playground areas and other projects of the Student Council. The registration form is
available at school and attached to this newsletter.
Help Needed!
We are looking for volunteers to help park
cars at the Valle Country Fair in Valle
Crucis on Saturday, October 15. This is a
HUGE fundraiser for the PTO and usually
brings in more than $5,000 for our school.
We need people to work in two shifts on
October 15. The first shift is from 7am-
1pm. The second shift is 12pm until 5pm-
ish. Volunteers will earn $50 for the
classroom of their choice for each shift
worked. Volunteers will help direct the cars into parking spaces
or out of the parking area. We need LOTS of volunteers to make
sure this event runs smoothly! Below is the link that will take
you to the Sign Up Genius for this event or you can get to the
link on the PTO webpage.

of Cinnamon Roasted Butternut Squash during lunch on Wednesday, October 12. The butternut squash was grown at Springhouse
Farm in Vilas which is an organic and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certified farm. We’ll share more info, photos, the recipe and
the taste test results next week! Parent volunteers interested in helping with the taste test activity from 10 to 1 on October 12,
please contact Shannon Carroll, Lettuce Learn Garden Coordinator, at [email protected].
Second Grade Classes Read and Share Frog and Toad Stories
Second grade classes have been reading Frog and Toad stories written by
Arnold Lobel. They have participated in several activities to show their
comprehension of the stories and to share their ideas for extending those
well-loved books. This week, each second grade class has presented some
of their favorite Frog and Toad stories to other grades as plays. The plays
were complete with narrators, costumes and set designs.
