Our main partner, LORO PARQUE, celebrates today, December 17, 2017, its 45th Birthday. And we can't imagine a better gift - coinciding with its anniversary - the opening of the marine life theme park POEMA DEL MAR, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; a new conservation and research center that will become the benchmark for the Loro Parque Fundación from which marine environmental projects will be developed.

Thanks to the first level facilities, the possibilities that the entire scientific community will have, and the financial contribution of our organization, we will be able to know much more about the biology of a multitude of species and promote the protection actions that are deemed most necessary. We intend that from Poema del Mar (as a new delegation of Loro Parque Fundación) will be coordinated and put together all protection policies as well the sustainable development of actions for effective protection of the entire area of Macaronesia.

Secondly, we would like to point out that LORO PARQUE, our main sponsor, has been named Best Zoo in the World, according to the votes of visitors through the prestigious TripAdvisor portal, based on the conservation actions we have carried out since the Foundation.

On the other hand, in Loro Parque Fundación we bet very high, for that reason we have managed to join our cause, as preferred ambassador, the basketball world champion and member of the Spanish national team, Sergio Rodríguez. It will help us, thanks to their example of commitment and teamwork, to spread our message of conservation and protection

The reader will be able to see how we have continued developing our projects around the world and renewed our commitment for the year 2018, without forgetting our research and conservation engagement in the Macaronesia region, collaborating with the main universities of the Canary Islands (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and University of La Laguna) and other institutions, such as DS Biodiversidad, Elasmocan or the main Governments of the Islands, in order to increase knowledge and help protect some of the most emblematic species of our seas, such as for example, the Angel shark, the Hammerhead shark or the Loggerhead sea turtle.

Renewed Goals: New projects for 2018

on the past 19th and 20th of october, the 20th Annual Board Meeting was held at Loro Parque Fundación headquarters, the Animal Embassy. The bosses, experts and directors of our team met to evaluate the projects and actions of conservation that have been carried out in 2017, as well as assess those that will be financed next year 2018.

Previously, more than 3 million dollars had been received in applications, arriving from different parts of the world. All the applications were discussed and analyzed, and the high quality of the projects presented was highly valued. Finally,

the commitment for 2018 will involve an outlay of more than $ 1,000,000 to support new projects that captured the urgency of the action, in addition to continuing with those others where there is no need to lower our guard and stand firm to achieve the long-awaited conservation successes.

In total, 36 projects will be financed during 2018 and, by the end of the year, they will have been $ 18,000,000 dollars that Loro Parque Fundación has allocated to protect the most threatened species in the world. We will give an account of the evolution of the projects in the next editions of the magazine.

Poema del Mar: new center of conservation and rescueSince its initial project, Poema del Mar Aquarium, has been conceived as a tool for raising awareness, research and conservation of the marine fauna of the Canary Islands and Macaronesia, especially of those species that are most threatened: sharks, rays, turtles, etc.

Thus, Poema del Mar has been created based on the precepts and inspiring principles of modern zoos, following the direct example of the best zoo in the world, Loro Parque, which bases its activity on raising awareness among visitors about the problems of our planet.

The new benchmark of the city of Las Palmas (which has the

invaluable support of the Island Council, through the Tourist Board and the support of the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through its Development Society), does not forget an essential commitment to the advancement of science, making available to researchers the animals under their care, so that they serve to increase scientific knowledge, while guaranteeing the well-being of each living being. Finally, the aquarium is designed as a tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity, with projects ranging from the breeding and supplementation of

populations of the most threatened species, to the development of surveillance and protection actions in the marine environment itself.

As in Loro Parque, Loro Parque Fundación will be in charge of all the conservation actions in Poema del Mar, which, in fact, they already started in 2016. An example of these, are the shark conservation projects, which are an essential element in Poema del Mar, combining the exhibition of animals in the aquarium and outreach and conservation actions either outside and

inside the enclosure. Visitors in Poema del Mar

will be able to observe one of the most endangered shark species, the Angelshark, for which Canarian waters are one of its last remaining strongholds. Individuals held in the aquarium will be highly trained, allowing researchers from all around the world an unprecedented access to


this species to increase the scientific knowledge and direct it towards its conservation. Furthermore, angelsharks housed in Poema del Mar will be the ambassadors for their species in the wild, not just to raising public awareness about their threats but also to obtain funds for “in situ” and “ex situ” conservation actions through Loro Parque Fundación. Since 2016, this entity is supporting a project to conduct an angelshark population register by phothoidentification in the Canary Islands, a very promising technique that could reduce the impact

in the animals while censing. The “cornudas” (as hammerhead

sharks are known in the Canaries) will be also present in Poema del Mar, serving as ambassadors for the pelagic sharks, whose populations are rapidly declining in the world due to overfishing. Even if hammerhead sharks in Canary Islands are not considered high risk of extinction, it

is only a matter of time. It is estimated that every year over 100.000.000 sharks are killed

globally, which

not only threatens

some species survival but the

entire balance of marine ecosystems.

World aquaria have been fighting for decades

in order to reverse the bloodthirsty predator image

of sharks shown in Hollywood’s blockbusters. Poema del Mar will

be supporting this initiative as well by seeking a shift in social sensitivity towards these animals and, thus, creating resources and support for their conservation.

Nevertheless, undoubtedly, sea turtles will be the flagship

conservation project in Poema del Mar. Loro Parque Fundación will team up with ADS Biodiversidad Association to resume

Pelagos project, which, among other goals, seeked to increase loggerhead turtles nesting sites in the Macaronesia region. unfortunately, there is only one loggerhead turtle nesting colony left in the West Atlantic at the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde), which is considered as one the eleven most endangered subpopulations in the world. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of any adverse

Event that could destroy this population, it is a top priority to establish new nesting sites. Together with ADS Biodiversidad, Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of Fuerteventura, Poema del Mar aims to become a leading center in the conservation of Atlantic loggerhead turtles by serving as a scientific research platform and, simultaneously, increasing this species geographic range in the Macaronesia area through the creation of new nesting sites in the Canary Islands. Even if it will require

a longterm increased human and financial effort, this ambitious project is crucial for the survival of this sea turtle subpopulation.

These are only some examples of the great commitment that Loro Parque Fundación will show over the next years to make Poema del Mar a top-level awareness and conservation center and create a positive impact in marine life and the health of our oceans.

We sincerely trust that we will count with the help of both, our members and all the nature lovers, to achieve our goal.


In 2013, Loro Parque Fundación started to support a very

interesting project, which was focused on a very unknown parrot species. A new breeding site of the Golden-plumed parakeet or Golden-plumed conure (Leptosittaca branickii),

or as the local people know it “Paramuno"

parakeet, was located in the Cañar province of Ecuador. There, a new artificial nests program was implemented in 2014. Despite being a rich area in Podocarpus sp., a tree whose fruits are these parrots’ main food supply, until that moment the nests had only being used for roosting.

It is in the forest canopy, at 1.400-3.500 m height, where this species feels comfortable and moves freely. They search for conifers seeds and even leafs of other trees, which are also a part of their diet. Considering the habitat fragmentation due to human activities, it is not rare to spot them in corn fields, too.

Yanayacu Biodiversity National Institute in Cosanga Biology Station,

with the direct support of Loro Parque Fundación, is working in the protection of this species, considered

endangered in Ecuador and Vulnerable (Vu) (IuCN, 2016) globally, as it is also present in Colombia and Perú.

It is observed in small flocks of 8 to 25 individuals during the months of June to December, mainly

nesting in woodpeckers abandoned nests or in dead wax palm trees

(Ceroxylon quindiuense). This is the same wax palm used

by the yellow-eared parrot (ognorhynchus icterotis) in Colombia, who is also affected by the cutting of

wax palms for Palm Sunday services and other traditions that are threatening these species. Loro

Parque Fundación has been a key point in the conservation of the last species, the yellow-eared parrot, whose current population

is exceeding the 3,000 individuals in the wild, thanks to the cooperation with the local NGo ProAves in a wide range of recovery actions. All of these have allowed that this parrot, once listed as Critically Endangered in IuCN Red List of Threatened Species, has changed its category to Endangered. A very significant shift that, even it is not enough to lower our guard in the protection of this species, it is an incredible reward for

our conservation efforts during these years.

Nowadays, the only places where Golden-plumed parakeet’s habitat is trully protected are Podocarpus National Park, one of the highest biodiversity natural areas of the country, which acts as a magnet to birds with its more than 4,000 plant species, and the Private Reserve of Tapichalaca, located in the south of the country. Managed by Jocotoco Foundation, a close partner of Loro Parque Fundación, in 2008 we established a breeding area with 18 artificial nests at Tapichalca, which allowed us to understand more aspects about the reproduction biology of this species, previously unknown to science.

To observe nesting habits and artificial nests occupancy is crucial to understand this species and therefore this phase of the program in Ecuador will continue until the end of December 2017.

In January 2016, feathers were detected inside one of the nests, showing that even if they were not used for reproduction, they are very important for roosting. As an average of 19 individuals were found in different patches of forest in the Cañar province, and considering there was food supply for this species in the area, it was suggested as a good spot for an stable population. This was confirmed after some months, as in May a flock of 60 individuals was observed, the biggest ever observed in the area.

To have information about its movements and that it is in May when the highest occurrence is observed allows our researchers to start studying this species. As parrot observation is very complicated for field researchers, determining these data is key when studying birds in nature.

Furthermore, it is a great conservation success in this process to confirm that the biggest population for this species is in the Cañar area, in Ecuador, where its main food resource is the tree Podocarpus sp., locally known as “Trenza”.

To be able to determine where the roosting sites are is also a crucial point in field research. This is sometimes the most difficult

step, especially for species that do not return to their resting sites until just before sunset. When restoring fragmented habitats due to deforestation, there is a need to only use varieties of plants naturally present in those ecosystems and not others, even if these are commonly used by the parrot that is meant to be preserved. We need to create a balanced combination to maintain the optimum conditions. Therefore, the reforestation program includes over 20 plant species, 4 of which are closely linked to the Golden-plumed

parakeet. The Trenza, as Podocarpus sp. is locally known, the wax palm Cerozylum sp., the “Sangre de Drago” Croton sp. and the weeping fig Ficus sp.. Environmental education and outreach, all together with reforestation, habitat conservation activities and research give us good and encouraging hope for the species that may disappear from Earth. Scientific advances in the Max Planck Cognition Scientific Station on collaboration with

Loro Parque FundaciónThe Max Planck Comparative Cognition Scientific Station is a research facility based on collaboration with the Loro

Parque Fundación that was developed specifically for the purpose of studying the cognitive skills and processes of parrots and other animals. Based in the Animal Embassy at Loro Parque . They continue contributing through comparative research to obtain the important data that answer some fundamental questions in cognitive science. As well as the way, in which animals acquire their knowledge, what they know thanks to randomly happened and if they can reason by analogy.

The studies with touch screens are one of the methodologies that the Comparative Cognitive Research Group (CCRG) laboratory is used to answer these questions. The animals can simply touch images on a screen and get a small piece of food as a reward, when they choose the correct options. As the screen can easily be touched by many species of animals (using beak, legs, noses or hands) and the tasks can be modified to develop different requirements, this methodology offers enormous possibilities for the study of comparative cognition.

However, there is a lot of evidence that non-human animals, including dolphins, chimpanzees and birds, possess numerical abilities, that is, an understanding of numbers.

The famous work with the African Gray Parrot, Psittacus erithacus, "Alex" offered the first results of numerical abilities with some parrots, showing that Alex could recognize quantities

above six and understand the concept of nothing or zero. To investigate more deeply about what can parrots and other animals understand and how they use numerical concepts. The ongoing pilot study focuses on ordering number series and the ability to order symbols in ascending or descending order.

During a task series, it is supposed that parrots have to learn that the on the screen shown symbols will

always have a specific order. All the items are displayed simultaneously, and their positions vary randomly between one test and another. The task of the parrot is to touch the items in the correct order, regardless of their position on the monitor. This study will help to clarify how animals perceive numerical concepts and will shed light on fundamental processes under numerical competence in humans and other animals.


In August, the prestigious travel portal TripAdvisor has recognized Loro Parque through their annual Travellers' Choice 2017 as the BEST ZooLoGICAL PARK IN THE WoRLD, an award that is based on the independent evaluations of the users of this worldwide platform who has visited the zoo facilities.

This is an award that has been received with great joy, it is an acknowledgement of the true animal welfare, and as a milestone that joins other recent recognitions, such as the certification of animal welfare granted by the prestigious American Humane, the renowned animal welfare organization, converting it into the first zoo in Europe that have obtained 100% standard compliance, the highest rating; or the certificate of the independent auditor Global Spirit, which recognizes 100% compliance with the requirements established by animal welfare standards that have been set by ABTA, the Association of Tour operators and Travel Agents of the united Kingdom. Among the members of ABTA are present the leaders of the tourism industry, such as Thomas Cook or TuI uK.

by the users of Trip Advisor as the best in the world in animal welfare, considering the role of a modern zoo in the society, could not be fully grasped without the knowledge about its research and conservation program carried out since 1994 through the Loro Parque Fundación. Thanks to the support of Loro Parque, its partners, visitors, friends and collaborators, more than 17 million dollars have been directly invested for the development of conservation programs both in situ and ex situ, following the commitment ‘100% for Nature’.

Among many significant successes, including important achievements in the marine environment, Loro Parque Fundación’s work has led to the saving of up to nine species of parrots from their imminent extinction. This is the case, to give some examples, of the Blue-throated macaw, original of Beni, Bolivia, whose population has increased from 50 to 350 individuals with the project. Another good example that occurred in the same timeline is the evolution of Lear’s Macaw, whose population has increased from 22 to over 1.200 individuals, as well as the Yellow-eared parrot from Colombia, whose numbers have increased to over 2.500 individuals in present days, thanks to the efforts of the project to save the palm tree habituated by these parrots. Fundación started this project, there were only 82 individuals of this species left in the wild.

The results of the coordinated efforts between Loro Parque and Loro Parque Fundación, in their continuous commitment to innovation, are very clearly represented in the newest project KAZA, which is aimed at protecting the cross-border areas of five African countries. The goal is to ensure the conservation of the African lion, a highly endangered species whose numbers have decreased in the last 50 years from 100.000 to less than 25.000 (over 75%). on September 7th, the founder of our foundation, Mr. Wolfgang Kiessling, celebrated his 80th birthday. of course, 80 reasons are not enough to thank him for everything he has done for us. Without their sense of responsibility, sensitivity and social commitment, especially in the development of environmental and animal protection projects, many species of psittacines would have disappeared or their current populations would be in critical danger of extinction. Just to mention some examples, like the Yellow-eared Parrot of Colombia, the Blue-throated Macaw of Bolivia, the Lear's Macaw and the Red-tailed Amazon of Brazil, the Parrot of Mauritius, or the Red-vented Cockatoo of the Philippines, these are some of the nine species of parrots that Loro Parque Fundación has helped them for a better future.

We are proud to continue that his name is still in our DNA, and we know at first hand that his desire to continue protecting nature and the most endangered species remain intact or even renewed; so let's continue "fighting" for a better world, we are confident that our future is in safe hands.

The educational work is essential to guarantee the conservation of threatened species and biodiversity. Although most of this transmission of values takes place in the classroom, it is also a fundamental priority of modern zoos and aquariums to try to solve the current environmental crisis. The range of educational possibilities that these institutions allow, should not be limited to the mere observation of animals outside their habitat, but should include dynamic activities that expand and complement, in a pleasant way, the contents that are worked from the centers.

Aware of this, Loro Parque Fundación has worked since its inception to expand its educational offer and take full advantage of the awareness potential represented by Loro Parque and, in the near future, also by Poema del Mar. In this sense, we not only offer workshops and guided tours for school groups, but our commitment to education goes beyond our facilities. For this course, we have renewed our online video-conference program to facilitate and improve connections with centers anywhere in Spain and / or abroad. They will be able, with just one click to enjoy observing animals as fascinating as the

penguins, dolphins, orcas, gorillas or, as a novelty, of parrots and lions.

Also, taking advantage of the opening of the Poema del Mar aquarium in Gran Canaria, schoolchildren will have the opportunity, without moving from their classrooms, to see the impressive window of the Deep Sea with its sharks, to dive with the sea turtles or to meet the friendly lemurs. In addition, we will continue with our educational projects for Primary and Secondary schools in the Canary Islands, whose main objective is to raise awareness in Canarian society about the need to know, protect and conserve the environment and animal species, with special emphasis on the marine environment, given the great importance of the sea in our Autonomous Community.

During the Week of Marine Conservation, awareness-raising activities will be carried out in different centers of all the archipelago islands, in which the students will learn about the different negative impacts that human activity exerts on the oceans.
