Let me not to the marriage of true minds, Admit impediments.Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove. O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wand’ring bark, Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle’s compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me prov’d, I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.

Charitable Giving The Christian service of providing material needs for those less fortunate is different from any other form of humanitarianism. While professional competence by those administering aid is a primary and fundamental requirement, it is not of itself sufficient to be classed as truly humanitarian. Why? When we are dealing with human beings they always need something more than technically proper care. They need humanity. They need heartfelt concern. Those who work for Christian charitable organisations must be distinguished by the fact that they do not meet merely the needs of the moment, but they dedicate themselves to others with heartfelt concern, enabling them to experience the richness of their humanity. In addition to necessary professional training, charity workers also need “formation of the heart”. They need to be led to that encounter with Christ which awakens their love and opens their spirits to others. They also must not be inspired by ideologies aimed at improving the world, but should rather be guided by faith which works through love. In other words, there is a qualitative difference between Christian charity and every other form of humanitarianism. My deep personal sharing in the needs and sufferings of others becomes a sharing of my very self with them: if my gift is not to prove a source of humiliation for them, I must give to others not only something that is my own, but my very self; I must be personally present in my gift. The essential difference of Christian charity is therefore the personal spiritual dimension, a participation in the love of the Blessed Trinity. There is a danger today of a ‘growing secularism’ of many Christians engaged in charitable work. In years gone by, outstanding Christians pioneered much of the charitable work that was foundational in helping those suffering. These are some characteristics shared by such individuals, e.g.

1. Initially they didn’t work up plans for structures, but began by reforming themselves as disciples of Christ. What is needed in order to respond to the needs of mankind in every age is holiness, not management.

2. They were nonetheless all people of imagination, not functionaries of apparatuses. 3. They did not encourage bureaucracy, but simplicity. Everything should not take place by way of committees; there

must ever also be the personal encounter. 4. They were effective not because of brilliant rhetoric and sophisticated strategies, but rather because they exerted

themselves and left themselves vulnerable in the service of Gospel and the needy. Christianity is not just about almsgiving. Christian charity is intimately connected with personal love and personal encounters with the grace of Christ. This is what gives Christian Social Service its distinctive character and makes it different from secular forms of humanitarian aid. Many modem corporate practices preclude the flourishing of a personal dimension. As Christians we are called to share our 1) faith, 2) hope and 3) love. Each component must be present if what we are giving to others is to be worthy of them and worthy of the same “Christian giving”.Fr. Peter HoughtonOur Lady of Appleby Roman Catholic Church

YYYYYYYYYYEcumenical Progress in Cumbria

A service of Hope and Expectation has heralded the strengthening of Cumbria’s designation as England’s first ecumenical county. Hundreds of people gathered at Carlisle Cathedral for the Advent Service yesterday afternoon, during which the Salvation

Army became the latest denomination to officially sign a new Declaration which signals closer working practice. It came five years after leaders from the Methodist, United Reformed and Anglican churches joined together to sign a Declaration of Intent, signalling moves to work more closely together in mission. The Rt Rev’d James Newcome, The Bishop of Carlisle, said: “The service was a really historic moment, not only for the county but for the whole of the country. It’s a sign of our absolute commitment to each other as Christians to take the Gospel into the whole of the county. “We could hardly feel more encouraged and to make the signing on Advent Sunday when we’re thinking about the coming of Jesus was a wonderfully appropriate time to do this. Everybody has been so warm, enthusiastic and friendly; it augurs very well, indeed, for what lies ahead.”The new member of staff in the Heart of Eden group, Peter Boyles, introduces himself below:Hullo everybody, my name is Peter Boyles and Bishop James asked me to move to Appleby to assist in the ministry and mission of the benefice, as well as working with colleagues from other churches in the development of the Mission Community.I am married to Fiona and have two grown up children, Heather and Simon and a working cocker spaniel, Monty (more of him later!). For the past 17 years I have been Vicar of Dent with Cowgill in the Yorkshire Dales and before that I was rector of a large rural benefice in Buckinghamshire. As a “country parson,” I feel a deep appreciation for the presence and work of the church in the countryside and look forward to getting to know you all in the villages of the benefice and Appleby town, where I will be based. I look forward to supporting my new colleagues in the impressive ministry you have in Eden.I am from a “clerical family,” my Father was a Anglican priest, having postings in the West Indies, London, and latterly in the Oxford and Canterbury Dioceses. I was ordained in Chester Diocese in 1988 ( and knew Bishop James when he as at the Cathedral there) and served two curacies in the city of Chester and on the Wirral at Neston, before feeling a call to serve in rural ministry. During my time as a rural incumbent I have enjoyed partnerships with organisations working in the countryside such as the Addington Fund, English Heritage and the Hidden Britain project (which aims to develop the church’s ministry to visitors).But now we begin a new stage in the pilgrimage of faith, with all the exciting challenges and opportunities which lie ahead. When you come to visit Appleby Vicarage, please call at the front door (there will be a new sign to guide you). The gates to the drive will be shut in order to keep Monty the cocker spaniel in!”

Candlemas 2017There is a rich tradition of different ways of worshipping in the Anglican church. On the feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple ( Candlemas) on Thursday February 2nd, there will be a Solemn Eucharist, celebrated in Anglo-Catholic tradition, at 7.30pm in Appleby Church. All are very welcome to the service. If you would like more details, do have a word with one of the clergy.

From the Choir Stalls: A happy New Year to you all from St Lawrence’s Church Choir!The first half of February seems to be a busy time for us. On Saturday 11th Rev’d Peter Boyles will be licensed as Assistant Priest. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Peter and his family.Candlemas is sometimes known as the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, and commemorates an early stage in Jesus’ life. As Jesus is brought into the Temple, Simeon, who had been promised that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah (Luke 2.26), recognises Jesus’ divinity and prays the ‘Nunc Dimittis’, a prayer that is said or sung at Evening Prayer every day of the year (Lord, now lettest thou they servant depart in peace, according to thy word…).Candlemas falls 40 days after Christmas Day and marks the end of Christmastide.Parish Pump adds:“In New Testament times 40 days old was an important age for a baby boy: it was when they made their first ‘public appearance’. Mary, like all good Jewish mothers, went to the Temple with Jesus, her first male child - to ‘present him to the Lord’. At the same time, she, as a new mother, was ‘purified’. Thus we have the Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.“In bygone centuries, Christians said their last farewells to the Christmas season on Candlemas, 2 February. This is exactly 40 days after Christmas Day itself.“So where does the Candlemas bit come in? Jesus is described in the New Testament as the Light of the World, and early Christians developed the tradition of lighting many candles in celebration of this day. The Church also fell into the custom of blessing the year’s supply of candles for the church on this day - hence the name, Candlemas.”All are welcome join us for this festival service which is increasing in both popularity and significance throughout the country. A choir of about 25 voices will be leading themusic.

YYYYYYYYYYYTown Council ReportCorrectionLast month we published an obituary to Clare Patterson. Her name was spelt “Claire” in error, and we apologise for this.Mayor’s Lunch for Senior CitizensThis will take place on Thursday 2 March at the Tufton Arms. Lunch will be followed by entertainment and bingo. Bookings can be made at the Tourist Information Centre from Wednesday 1 February. Please book for yourself and not more than one other person.Eden Valley Transport: Bus and TrainDespite proposals from Friends of Eden Valley Transport for a revised fare structure and timetable to improve profitability, the well-used 563 service, a lifeline for many households, was withdrawn by its former operators from 16 December. Efforts for the restoration of at least parts of the service by other providers continue. Journeys between Appleby and Penrith by public transport are still possible, though not easy: printed details can obtained from Appleby TIC. It would be helpful to know how individuals who relied on the bus are now managing, so please contact the Council if you wish. Better news is that work on rebuilding the embankment at Armathwaite is on schedule and a full restoration of the Settle-Carlisle rail service is expected from 31 March.Council AwardIn recognition of the correctness of its procedures, Appleby Town Council has achieved a foundation level award from the National Association of Local Councils, only the second council in Cumbria to do so. This reflects great credit on the Town Clerk and her team.TIC ExhibitionUntil late February the TIC exhibition is a fascinating display of the ancient art of calligraphy by Eden Valley Scribes. Don’t miss it.EdensideWe are very disappointed to report that the call-in of the Cumbria cabinet decision to approve the permanent closure of Edenside was not approved by the CCC Scrutiny Committee. The quality of reporting, reasoning and use of evidence on which the decision was based was not impressive. The residents remain in Greengarth, Penrith, where they are well looked after, mostly be the same staff who cared for them in Appleby. Visitors are made very welcomeChristmas in ApplebyA succession of Appleby events lit up the festive season - Sparkle Day and the pantomime, the Christmas Lights, singing across the Eden, the Hospice at Home concert, carols at the Castle, in addition to a one-off, this year’s Radio Cumbria Carol Service broadcast from St Lawrence’s Church. Many good people and organisations worked hard to make these things happen, too many to name individually. On behalf of the town, the Council is grateful for so much selfless effort for the good of the community.

Flood ReportsDarren Rogers, amateur meteorologist from Morland, has presented the Council with a copy of his personally compiled research on flooding in Appleby, with particular reference to December 2015. The Council will give serious consideration to his painstaking work and conclusions, along with the final report of Cumbria CC and the Environment Agency, out of which it is hoped will come a programme of works to make Appleby more flood-resistant.River Bank StructuresContractors working for Eden District Council have recently replaced some of the flood-damaged black-and-white wooden posts on the Bongate side of river bank. Work on the shelters and fencing on the Appleby side is scheduled, but not yet done.Parish PreceptAt the time of writing the precept for 2017-18 had yet to be settled by the Town Council because final details were awaited from Eden District Council.

YYYYYYYYYYYFriends of Eden Public TransportAt a meeting of action group members a constitution for the Friends of Eden Public Transport was agreed. The possibilities for both commercial and community schemes were considered. It was noted that local schools and parents are making their own arrangements for transporting pupils and that a couple of local coach companies are considering offering shopper-orientated services. Two members of the group have accepted an invitation to an open day organised by The Little White Bus scheme in North Yorkshire and there is an opportunity to meet with The Fellrunner community bus scheme organisers. There will be a meeting of The Friends of Eden Public Transport on 3 March, to which representatives of parishes affected by the closure of the 563 service will be invited.

YYYYYYYYYYYProperty Level Flood Resilience GrantEden DC Technical Services advise that householders and businesses effected by the floods last December now have more time to apply for the £5,000 Property level flood Resilience grant, with the deadline for the application extended from end December 2016 to 31 March 2017. Eden District Council have to date approved approx. £1Million of funding under the scheme. Within Appleby approximately 80 homes were flooded and are eligible for the flood grant and we would encourage those that haven’t already applied to do so before the new deadline.At the start of November 2016 Emily Rainsley [email protected] took over the administration of the grant.

YYYYYYYYYYYAppleby EdiblesAway from the winter cold and wet odd jobbing inside the Polytunnel continues in preparation for spring. We still have planter beds available for anyone who wants to join the group and grow vegetables and flowers. Enquiries to Appleby Tourist Information Centre in the Moot Hall 51177, a small annual charge is made for use of planter beds and there is lots of free advice.Appleby SmarterWork continues to smarten the town, the real challenge at the moment is clearing leaves from footpaths and picking up litter. We do ask that people do not clear up dog poo then throw the bag into the hedgerows, the bag will take years to disintegrate and hardly enhances the town. We have received a grant to plant ornamental apple trees about down to enhance the townscape with colourful spring blossom. After all the Norse men when the first came to the area are refuted to refer to the town as the place with apple trees.If you want to join in with smartening the town please contact the Tourist Information Centre on 51177Finally can the person who kindly placed a bench in Ladygarth town garden please contact Paul Emerson at Eden District Council on 01768 817817.Appleby Chamber of TradeAs we move towards Autumn Appleby Chamber of Trade is working with the local businesses and Eden District Council to provide more support to Businesses on the Cross Croft Industrial Estate and also in the Town Centre. The Chamber will be putting on a number of training sessions for Digital Marketing and 1:1 sessions are now available. For more information contact [email protected].

CRIME PREVENTION – Clampdown on Cross-Border Criminals Involved in Countryside CrimeIt was all hands on deck this week, when over 200 police officers and volunteers took part in December’s major clampdown on rural crime. Operation Checkpoint is the largest rural policing operation of its kind in the country, and regularly sees officers from Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and Northumbria join forces to target cross-border criminals.Running from 3pm Wednesday 7th December till the early hours of Thursday 8th December, intelligence-led deployments were coordinated between the six forces, along with static vehicle checkpoints and visits to vulnerable premises.Intelligence shows that organised crime groups from across the north of England are involved in thefts, burglaries, handling stolen property and targeting rural areas. These criminals use their extensive knowledge of the road networks across the region in an attempt to avoid detection.Checkpoint targets, disrupts and deters vehicles suspected of being linked to criminality by deploying officers and volunteers with expert knowledge of their local area, crime patterns, intelligence and road network, and using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.The operation saw over 100 vehicles stopped for checks across the Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and Northumbria areas resulting in a number of vehicle seizures, fixed penalty notices and arrests.Many thanks to the dedicated farmer and gamekeeper volunteers who supported the officers in Cumbria and thanks to Kath Earls bakery, Long Marton for providing refreshments.If anyone is interested in becoming involved in these nights of action, please contact PCSO 5206 Karen Dakin or PCSO 5169 Janet Allinson on Tel 101 or [email protected]

The Dead Sea Scrolls - A Priceless Find – by accident!70 years ago this month a couple of shepherds in the hills above Qumran near the Dead Sea idly threw a stone into what they thought was an empty cave. When they heard the sound of smashing pottery they searched inside, and found the most important biblical discovery of the century. Their stone had led them to what became known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, manuscripts of the entire Hebrew Bible except for the book of Esther, stored in clay vessels. The scrolls were the work of a religious community called the Essenes, who lived near that site before and during the life of Jesus.

As scholars slowly unraveled them – and that task took decades - they discovered that they were handling manuscripts of the Bible which were hundreds of years older than any we had previously possessed. Most of the biblical manuscripts on which our translations had previously been based were copies of copies, carefully crafted in monasteries over the centuries by people dedicated to preserving the sacred text. But inevitably, in the process, there were occasional slips in the copying, and at times it’s obvious that those who were doing it didn’t understand the words they were copying.

So, in February 1947, the world had access to a much older and therefore more accurate record of the Jewish Scriptures – the Bible of Jesus and the first Christians. The most remarkable thing is actually how few ‘mistakes’ there were, seeing the centuries of copying – and not one that seriously affects our fundamental understanding of the Bible. Those two shepherds 70 years ago ensured that we today have a Bible text which is as close to the original as one could ever hope to get. I’m glad they threw the stone into the right cave!

Letter from St James the Least of All

Happily, the Church of England still retains some singular parish clergy. Take the parish of St James-the-Least in the county of C- for example. Here the elderly Anglo-Catholic vicar, Eustace, continues his correspondence to Darren, his nephew, a low-church curate recently ordained… On what sort of dog a clergyman should own

The RectorySt. James the Least of All

My dear Nephew DarrenI am absolutely delighted to hear that you are getting a dog. But be careful which variety you choose. First, your dog must be something substantial, but not prone to fighting or making amorous advances towards parishioners’ dogs. A mongrel may be all very well for you as a curate, but think to the future when you are an incumbent. Get a pedigree. It sets a better tone at the Rectory. It should also be a breed that sheds hair copiously, which should deter your more fastidious parishioners from bothering you at home. If it also drools, that is a bonus. I would recommend you do not get a sheepdog. They become neurotic trying to round everyone up as they roam round your lawn at the annual Summer Fete. It can be quite useful giving your dog a name that - naturally, by coincidence - is remarkably similar to that of an awkward parishioner. Being able to bawl out commands to “come”, “sit”, and “stop that”, along with the pet’s name, can be cathartic to you, salutary to the parishioner concerned and instructive to the rest of your congregation.Dogs keep every confidence you tell them, are infinitely sympathetic when you moan about the flower arrangers, and make an excellent audience when you rehearse your Sunday sermon on them. Just like my parishioners, my Labrador gives me a look of well-meaning incomprehension as I get underway, and within minutes slips into a peaceful doze, which continues until my sermon concludes. When gentlemen of the road call, before you open the door, make a series of very audible commands that imply you are restraining a ravenous beast. That your ravenous beast is smiling and tail-wagging, is irrelevant. It will make your caller hesitate to ring the bell another time.Dogs also provide an excellent excuse for terminating endless meetings, overlong phone calls, parish socials and even visits to the bishop. Even the hardest of hearts cannot stop you from dashing home to give your pet a toilet break, much, of course, as you would like to continue enjoying yourself with whoever it is you are obliged to flee from. But do not take them to your church council meetings. When difficult decisions have to be made, you can never rely on them voting the way you want. My Labrador will wag her tail and agree with anyone.

Your loving uncle,EustaceYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
