Find hearts Of Gold

Located on the crossroads of the Newell and Mid western highways, west wyalong is the perfect stop on your journey – so why not have a rest and explore the fabulous features of the area.

West Wyalong is the main centre and largest town in the Bland Shire, which forms part of the Riverina region of NSW. The town has more accommodation for travellers and more shopping than you would expect in a vibrant town of just over 3,000 people. The town has a rich history of gold mining and the crooked Main Street reflects these early days as it follows the original bullock track that curved around trees and gold diggings.

The town of Wyalong contains many of the beautiful historic features of the area such as the Historic Court House and Council Chambers. It is in Wyalong that you will also find some very unique gifts from the Exclusive Hot Glass Gallery.

The Bland Shire encompasses the villages of Barmedman, Mirrool, Tallimba, Ungarie,

Weethalle, Kikiora and Naradhan. These villages are well worth a visit and contain many things to see and do including the Mineral Pool in Barmedman, The Weethalle Whistle Stop and the Silo Kick Challenge in Mirrool held in October each year.

Attractionswyalong museumThe Museum presents a broad spectrum of exhibits illustrating the growth of the town and district over the past century. www.wyalongmuseum.com.au

CENTRAL TABLELANDS024

Gold, gold and more gold! From the first diggings at Ophir and the poppet heads of Lucknow to the gigantic open cut of Cadia, gold has helped shape our landscape. Almost every city and town can trace our history through the rich vein of the local Gold Trails. Villages like Hill End, Sofala, Millthorpe and Carcoar offer a link to the gold rush days. When bushrangers like Ben Hall and Frank Gardiner roamed the hills, striking gold of their own when they robbed the mail coach at Escort Rocks near Eugowra, 150 years ago. They say some of this treasure might still lay buried in the Weddin Mountains! Don’t miss the marvellous display in Millthorpe’s Golden Memories Museum.

In Manildra there awaits a real treat, the Amusu Theatre. You can still catch a screening at one of Australia's oldest picture theatres or find a souvenir of your own favourite movie at the amazing Movie Poster Museum, next door.

Of course many believe Bathurst is the home of motor racing and visitors always enjoy a lap around the famous Mount Panorama circuit. It is a public road so enjoy the view from the mountain top and be sure to stop off at the National Motor Racing Museum. The Chrysler Car Museum in Grenfell and Charlie McCarron’s Holden collection in Canowindra should also be on your to-do list.

Taking us even further back in time is the fabulous display of bones and stones at the

Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum, where T-Rex stands tall in all his splendour. While long before the dinosaurs (360 million years ago!), the mighty inland rivers of this region were full of bizarre and dangerous creatures. The Age of Fishes Museum brings this period to life with their audio tour and display.

Christmas Parade, Carols & Carnival

The Parkes area saw its beginnings in 1862 when the discovery of gold led to a hastily erected ‘canvas’ town known as “Currajong”. A further discovery of gold in 1871 at the nearby Bushman’s Gold Mine helped the district to become one of the richest gold producing areas in the colony. In 1873 the then Prime Minister of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes, showed his interest in the district by visiting the diggings. On December 1, 1873 the name of the settlement was changed from Bushmans to Parkes in honour of the great statesman. As mining diminished in importance, the plough, the combine and the harvester became the new symbols of progress.

Today Parkes is well known for its economic strengths and diversity in the industries of mining (with a large Rio Tinto Gold/Copper Mine located north-west of town), agriculture, tourism, retail and its developing status as a national transport logistics hub.

Parkes is an ideal location to stop for a break from your travels with easy access to the many services on offer in town. You will find it relatively easy to find parking (even for long vehicles) within close distance to the retail centre. With Woolworths, Coles, Big W and Target, plus a unique range of specialty stores, banks and essential services – Parkes will be sure to fulfil your travelling needs.

Whilst in Parkes you are also encouraged to enjoy our surrounds and attractions. Memorial Hill, with vehicular access from Bushman Street provides the best vantage point for magnificent views over Parkes and the surrounding

Located between Parkes and Dubbo, Peak hill offers travellers an enticing break. Stop a while, stretch your legs and enjoy the main street’s craft, antiques and coffee shops. Peak hill is centrally located for overnight stays and day tripping to nearby attractions such as the Zoo, The Dish and Goobang National Park.

Peak Hill’s history is linked with the discovery of gold in 1889. The story of Peak Hill’s golden history is interestingly displayed at the Visitor Information Centre, which is a great place to pick up locally made cakes, preserves or a souvenir, along with antiques, collectables and memorabilia for you to enjoy here and throughout town.

The Peak Hill Tourist Drive from the Visitor Information Centre will guide you to explore treasures such as Australia’s first vertical cement wheat silos (1918) which are still operating today, and the hospital, which is visible on the southern approach to town, built in 1904 and now listed with the National Trust.

If you’re looking for a picnic spot, Memorial Park (on the main street adjacent to the Bowling Club) is well maintained with gardens, picnic tables, free BBQ, and toilets; or the picturesque Commercial Gardens in the town centre, with tables and toilets.

The Bogan River and Weir, 6km west of town, is popular with campers, twitchers, photographers and fishermen. Plenty of off-road parking for recreational vehicles.

The Golf Club boasts incredible views, overlooking the stunning Hervey Ranges to the east.

The Fauna and Flora Reserve features a variety of birdlife and flora with spectacular sunsets viewed from the wooden footbridge.

The specimens include some major groups of invertebrates such as trilobites and ammonites, through to the rise of fish, amphibians and dinosaurs. One dinosaur case features a giant rib of a sauropod dinosaur, similar to those discovered in Queensland over the past couple of years. The gigantic “star” of this collection is the largest fossil fish on display anywhere in Australia. It is called Xiphactinus, and lived during the time of the dinosaurs. This specimen is about 4.5 metres long and we imagine every fishing fanatic travelling the Newell Highway will want to see it close up.

No visit to Dubbo is complete without a visit to Dubbo’s iconic attraction, Taronga Western Plains Zoo. In 2012, the Zoo celebrated its 35th year! That’s 35 years of memories for over eight million visitors who have passed through the gates since 1977. Today it is home to well over 700 animals including Giraffes, Rhinos and Elephants. It is widely recognised as Australia’s greatest open range zoo and is a place most visitors have a fond memory of, whether it be of a close encounter with an animal, of time spent with family members and friends, or the thrill of exploring the Zoo by bike or electric cart.

The Zoo layout is unique, with a 6km ring road that can be traversed by car, bike or electric cart (both available for hire) or on foot. The Zoo also offers mobility scooters (or Zooters!) A range of daily activities including free keeper talks and animal feeds, as well as behind the scenes tours and encounters, ensure there is always plenty to see and do.

Tickets are valid for two consecutive days, giving visitors ample time to access all that is on offer. One of the most popular parts of the Zoo is the Savannah Visitor Plaza. This free access area features Zoo information, shop, café, playground and free barbecues. This is all set in landscaped, park-like surrounds overlooking the Savannah Lake and Primate Islands, home to Ring-tailed Lemurs and Spider Monkeys. The area also includes a free mobile home service point for your added convenience.

Renowned amongst astronomers worldwide who vie for time on the powerful telescopes, Siding Spring has been at the forefront of astronomy discoveries for almost fifty years. The hands-on “Exploratory Centre”, open daily from 9.30am-4pm, is a place to learn fascinating facts about the universe; a café and astro-focussed gift shop complete The Exploratory Centre. The AAT Visitors Gallery provides opportunities to see the massive 3.9 metre telescope.

Visitors should note that Siding Spring is a research facility and closed to the public from 4pm each day; for night time viewing try Warrumbungle Observatory.

Also note: the last 4kms to the observatory are windy and towing is not permitted along this road.

Warrumbungle National ParkTimor Road – John Renshaw Parkway, Coonabarabran Ph: 02 6825 4364 (37kms west of Coonabarabran on Tourist Drive 1)

Peaks, spires and rugged mountain scenery dominate the spectacular Warrumbungle National Park – the remnants of ancient volcanic action which occurred between 17 and 13 million years ago followed by erosion of the vast sandstone landscape. The park is an ideal destination for families, bushwalkers and photographers who enjoy the challenge of exploring or simply enjoying the peace and solitude of a place of great beauty. With excellent

camping, caravanning (powered sites available) and picnic facilities and more than 50kms of walking trails suitable for easy walking or longer hikes, the Warrumbungles is a great opportunity to get up close to wildlife in its natural habitat. The Warrumbungles is where east meets west and so is home to hundreds of bird species.

The Visitor Centre located in the park is open each day from 9-4pm with an informative display re-telling stories of the geological and cultural histories of the area. Maps and gifts as well as Annual Parks Passes can be purchased. Camping fees are payable at the Centre.

NARRABRI054

CSIRO’s Australia Telescope Compact Array is the most advanced radio telescope in the southern hemisphere, located 25km west of Narrabri at the Paul Wild Observatory. The instrument detects radio waves from space which are converted to images for interpretation by visiting scientists from around the world.

These signals reveal structures and objects in space that are not visible through an optical telescope and help to unlock the secrets of the universe. The Compact Array consists of six 22m dish antennas that work together to simulate a much larger antenna, allowing astronomers to observe very fine details. Five of the antennas sit on a giant railway track 3km long and are often moved to different configurations. The observatory also hosts telescopes for the University of Sydney, the University of Birmingham and a solar observatory of IPS Radio and Space Services.

A Visitor Centre is situated on site in pleasant bush surroundings with free gas BBQs, picnic facilities and amenities, but no refreshments are sold. Exhibits provide information about astronomy, the telescope and how the instrument works; including a video presentation, garden sculptures and outdoor interactive displays. The viewing platform provides a great outlook to track where one or more antennas are usually located nearby.

The Centre is open each day during daylight hours but normally unstaffed. General admission is free.

newstead homestead tours

Visit this historic home, garden and Shearing Shed in a lovely valley east of Inverell. Situated on the banks of the Newstead Creek, the house and garden have many layers of history. Once the home of the Anderson and Bucknell Families, their stories come alive through the interpretation panels created by the NSW History Houses Trust.

Although the house is unfurnished, private collections provide information and photos of life on one of the earliest properties. The tour outlines the property from 1838 and also includes a visit to the Shearing Shed immortalised by artist TOM ROBERTS in his painting “The Golden Fleece”.

FossickingFossicking is available at several locations, free of charge, where you can try your luck looking for sapphires, zircons, quartz crystals, tin crystals, tourmaline and even diamonds.

If you need a little help there are private parks located around the area where they will help you with equipment, advice and demonstrations on how to sieve to get these fabulous gems and minerals.

7 Oaks Fossicking Park & Frazer Creek Sapphires are two great destinations for the fossicker. There are people on hand to show you all about rock hunting and how to go about it

and seasonal waterfalls. This is an important conservation area which protects mature old ironbark trees and cypress pines. Camping is available with no facilities.

Barayamal National Park is accessed only by foot through the Lake Inverell Reserve. This park has the grassy white box which it protects. This tree was usually the first to be cleared for farming. This area, since been under conservation law, has seen native wildlife flourish and visitors can now appreciate the walking track through the park.

Lake Inverell was formed when the Macintyre River was dammed upstream from Inverell to supply water to the town. Since 1983 water has been piped from Copeton Dam, so Lake Inverell is now a beautiful wildlife refuge, recreation area and a very popular birdwatching location. This area has bbqs, toilets, picnic tables and walking tracks which allows for a great day out close to town.

Goonoowigall Reserve is located in scenic granite country with low hills and large boulders. The main entrance located just south of town offers a number of picnic areas, toilets and 10km of walking tracks which covers scenic and historic sites. Birdlife is abundant and also present are rock wallabies, swamp wallabies and kangaroos.

Pindari Dam is a lovely part of the world north of Inverell and is a boating and fishing haven. Streams running into the dam offer the angler good fishing and a good spot to camp. Solar powered showers, toilets, picnic and bbq areas, and boat ramp are provided.

FossickingWhether you’re a beginner or a seasoned fossicker, there are plenty of opportunities for you to take home a beautiful piece of Inverell.

correctly. With everything on site, these private properties are open for you to try your luck.

View the local sapphires and other gems at The Gem Centre, Billabong Blue Sapphires, DeJon Sapphire Centre, Inverell Gem & Mineral Shop and all Jewellery Shops in town. A lot of these sites also have a cutter on hand to show you how they start from a rough stone through to the sparkling finished product.

The Great OutdoorsThere are a number of great parks around where you can either stay the night or spend a pleasant day trekking.

Kwiambal National Park lies north west of Inverell 25km from the township of Ashford. The park is located at the junction of the Macintyre and Severn Rivers. This woodland park includes rugged gorge country, waterfalls, walking tracks and Limestone Caves which are home to some rare bats and, of course, limestone formations.

All weather gravel roads lead to the lookouts at the Macintyre Falls area and why not stay the night at the Lemon Tree Flat picnic and camping area which has toilets and bbqs right beside the Severn River. Don’t forget to bring all your own supplies for your stay. You can now stay in cottages at the park as well. These are very well appointed and cater from families up to large groups. Bookings can be made at the Tenterfield National Parks Office.

Kings Plains National Park to the east of Inverell is a rocky woodland best known for its still pools

Copeton Dam Northern Foreshores is just 17km

from Inverell with powered sites and plenty of

bush camping available with an amenities block

located within the park. Good fishing, skiing,

birdwatching and maybe a fossick around the

dam awaits your next visit. Playground, picnic

areas, boat ramp and an onsite Manager is

there to assist you. Please note that dogs are

not permitted.

Copeton State Park is a huge area surrounding

the dam of 900 hectares with accommodation,

powered sites, amenities scattered throughout

the park, bunkhouse, administration centre

featuring a well stocked kiosk, laundry, tennis

courts, playgrounds, water spray park, golf

course, camp kitchen and of course all water

activities to be enjoyed.

Arts – Crafts – Antiques – woodturningInverell has some very talented people which

allows for some fantastic works to be displayed

and sold. The Inverell Art Gallery allows many

of these people to showcase their works in

the Gallery and throughout the year they will

often have special exhibitions from local and

visiting artists.

New England Wood Turning is a short drive south

to Gilgai. Here you will see a true craftsman at

work and take in some of his great creations.

Rob is also a very good didgeridoo maker and

an accomplished player.

There are also a couple of Antique Shops in the

area which have some fantastic items from the

local area and beyond.

wine – Olives The New England Area is now a recognised

wine region and we are very lucky to have

several vineyards/wineries within our Shire.

The wines are unique due to the cool climate

and high altitude and, in fact, a long history of

wine production goes back to 1870 when George

Wyndham, founder of Wyndham Estate Wines,

planted vines just north of Inverell.

New England Estate Wines, Gilgai Estate, Zappa Wines & Reedy Creek Vineyard all offer Cellar

Door Sales with sampling before buying and Mt. Topper Vineyard is open by appointment. A big

variety of both reds and whites are available

along with tasty fortified wines and liqueurs. In

fact the vineyards grow some rare and exotic

grapes to tantalise all tastebuds.

Wine and olives go hand in hand and Inverell

has many olive groves planted in the hillsides

around the district. Olives of Beaulieu allows

you to walk through the grove and sample many

varieties of oils and olives and learn the benefits

of using olive oil products.

Places to Eat

This rich agricultural area allows the local

produce from the district to be served in the

local restaurants, cafes and cosy country pubs. Of

course many restaurants serve the district’s wines

which go beautifully with a locally grown steak.

Lovely little cafes dotted throughout the business

centre offer a lovely experience and of course

a good coffee, all with a smile.

Accommodation

Often the most important decision to make is

where to lay your head for the night. Inverell

has a full range that will meet all needs, from

the budget conscious with several caravan parks

and country pubs available.

Another way is to stay in one of the cottages

which are located throughout the town and

district. This allows you to self cater and this

type suits families requiring a little extra room.

A great selection of motels all have excellent

facilities and offer all the services that you

would expect. The standard ranges from budget

through to four star.

We have some lovely historic homes that offer

B&B style accommodation, which gives you a

special, personal touch.

Don’t forget the camp sites scattered throughout

the shire in some beautiful and peaceful spots.
