Finding InformationEfficiently and Accurately

You can find information in the manuals system in a number of ways.

Start by opening the TxDOT home page and clicking TxDOT Library.

Click the Manuals link.

Click the Manuals link.

Browse an alphabetical list of manuals

browse for manuals categorized by their collections

or browse for manuals revised in the past 90 days.

You can also search for a word or phrase. This search box appears

on every page.

We’ll discuss using the search feature in detail later in the presentation.

When opening a manual, you may choose an HTML format. . .

or a PDF format.

Open a manual.

From a manual’s title page, you’ll find

a link to a printer-friendly PDF

an expandable table of

contents

and “breadcrumbs,” or text that maps yourlocation in the site.

Expand the chapters in the table of contents to produce sections.

Expand the sections to produce subsections.

Open a page in a manual by clicking a heading title in the TOC.

Some icons appear to help you get around.

Use the scrollbars to adjust the content and the page as needed.

Maximize an image by clicking it. Print it using

the right-click menu.

Text associated with the latest revision is

highlighted in yellow.

Each Web page consists of one sectionin a manual.

Bookmark any heading by clicking it in the TOC to produce the ID number. . .

and adding it to your favorites.

Searching for a Word or Phrase

When you’re inside a manual, you may search just that manual. . .

or search all manuals on the site.

For this example, we’ll search across all manuals for guidelines used whenmowing invasive species of plants.

Three entries are returned, in order of their relevance.

An entry includes the following:

the URLof the page

a short blurb describing a page result

and the name of the manual and the

relevant section.

Click here to view the results

page with search terms highlighted

in blue.

The top of the page displays the number of hits a term or phrase receives.

Here, you can further refine how terms are displayed in the section.

Click an arrow bracketing a term to move to the next or previous term.

Jump to the home page for two additional options for searching the system.

Search a manual collection

or search manuals revised in the

past 90 days.

Before using search, visit Help to optimize your use of search terms.

There, you’ll discover how to use quotes, commas, case, plus/minus signs,

and Boolean operators to hone your search.

Visit Advanced Help to search various manual

components and for other options.

Printing a Manual

Print a manual from its PDF. A link is available on the HTML title page.

Print the PDF from the menu bar (File > Print).

Specify the page range for

printing.

Alternately, right-click a bookmark in the table of contents to print the entire manual or a

chapter, section, or subsection.

You may also print an HTML section of a manual by clicking File > Print.

The table of contents will not appear in the

hard copy.

Print a portion of an HTMLpage by highlightingthe text and clicking

File > Print > Selection.
