THE NEW SYDNEY FISH MARKET
An iconic destination at the head of Blackwattle BayThe new Sydney Fish Market is a purpose built, authentic fish market fit for the 21st century, that will be a world-class food and dining attraction on Sydney’s inner harbour.
The stunning design will be an attraction in itself, united under a sweeping, environmentally sustainable roof which is one of the building’s most important sustainability features. It will provide natural light, shading, ventilation and allow for the harvesting and recycling of rainwater.
The delivery of the new market will improve visual and physical connections from Wentworth Park to the waters of Blackwattle Bay. A new section of the Blackwattle Bay foreshore promenade will also be completed, returning the foreshore to the public.
UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation is leading the project on behalf of the NSW Government. Construction is expected to commence mid-2019 and is due to open in 2023, subject to all necessary approvals.
Key featuresUrbanGrowth NSW and architects 3XN have approached the project with the specific goal of creating a new fish market that is more than just a fish market. The building will be:
• an authentic, working fish market • an exciting new public destination for Sydney • a cultural anchor and urban connector • a meeting place for community activities • an inspiring icon on Sydney’s world-renowned harbour.

• Basement level car parking • Ground floor auction house, wholesale tenancies, fishing vessel wharves
and loading dock • First floor market hall consisting of restaurants, food stalls, fresh

Roof features
A sweeping roof floats over the building like a canopy and consists of a timber beam structure, topped with 350 white triangular roof panels and skylights, creating both a warm and inviting space with natural, indirect daylight. Beyond design, the roof has five primary functions and sustainability attributes:
• shading
• natural light
• ventilation
• rainwater harvesting, and
• capture of solar energy.
SustainabilityThe sustainability features of the new building will work towards achieving a green star rating of 5 from the Green Building Council of Australia. The goals for the design include a reduction in energy, water and waste consumption compared with the existing fish market.
The new fish market design includes a number of key sustainability features:
• energy-efficient environmental design that utilises the sun, greenery and prevailing winds to environmental advantage
• innovative systems that minimise consumption and utilise ‘waste’ outputs
• productive landscapes and biodiverse aqua-scapes where native flora and fauna help in the filtration of water and the remediation of soil
• waste treated as a resource, with the collection and recycling of fish offal.
