Nothing is more important to the future of society than the safety of our children and nowhere is this more apparent than during their daily trips to school or travelling to events organised by their school or leisure association.

This aspect of modern life was the driving force behind the decision by Irisbus to introduce "Scolabus 24" to the UK market. The predecessors of the "Scolabus 24" have been operating in Europe for over six years and its credentials have been proved with more than three hundred vehicles in regular daily service.

They are built to meet the latest safety and environmental legislation and are designed to be developed to meet all known future legal expectations.

The first key safety feature is that the "Scolabus 24" has a high floor line to ensure that all the children are seated above the "crash zone" in the event of a front and side impact. Moreover, in the unlikely event of a vehicle rollover, it is satisfying to know that the body meets the European R66 legislation which specifies a construction strong enough to prevent the roof collapsing onto the children.

The seats are similarly built to high safety standards. Each seat is fitted with an "All Age" three point lap and diagonal seat belt so that, irrespective of the child's age or size, they can be transported with maximum comfort and security. The seats themselves are bolted directly to the floor which meets the relevant EU Directive 76/115 and is capable of withstanding a pull test of 4.5 tonnes per seat. All seats are individually numbered to permit personal allocation. This allows an easy check to be made to ensure that no-one is missed as well as guarding against vandalism.

This initial review of the benefits of the Irisbus "Scolabus 24" would be incomplete without referring to the contribution it makes to reducing congestion on the road. With its seating capacity of 68 passengers plus the driver, schools using the "Scolabus 24" will see a noticeable reduction in traffic around the school gates with the consequent improvement in safety and the surrounding air quality by allowing parents to leave their cars in the garage.

Read on to see how these benefits and many more make the Irisbus "Scolabus 24" the first choice for today's safety conscious environment.

The heart of the "Scolabus 24" is its engine and there is no bigger heart than the Iveco tector engine.

Designed to meet all the latest noise and emission legislation, the fundamentals of the power unit will ensure that it remains in profitable operation for years to come.

The "Scolabus 24" shares the engine with the Iveco Cargo, UK's biggest selling medium weight truck. Consequently, the engine is well known to service technicians up and down the country and support is never more than a phone call away.

The deep, one piece block with its parent bore construction, turbocharged and intercooled layout, makes the tector an impressively quiet unit - an ideal characteristic for a schoolbus engine.

The management of the many engine functions is in the hands of the latest electronic control unit. This talks to the other control units on the vehicle via a CAN bus network thereby ensuring that maximum operating efficiency is achieved at all times. This is true, not only when the vehicle is on the road but also when advantage is being taken of the latest Iveco diagnostic programme - MODUS.

The lowest possible fuel consumption is assured through the use of a high pressure, common rail, direct injection system. This allows the 240 horse power to be allied to a wide, usable torque curve making the "Scolabus 24" a very manageable vehicle - ideal for its primary role in urban environments

The 68 passenger seats are all mounted in channels directly to the totally flat floor structure. This is trimmed in non-slip grey vinyl and meets the European directive 76/115 which requires a pull test of 4.5 tonnes per seat. This high floor strength is the basis for a level of passenger security that is second to none in this sector.

To maintain a high quality level of comfort throughout their journey, whatever the length, three box type saloon heaters are provided together with two roof mounted ventilation hatchs and two electric extractor vents mounted at the rear of the saloon.

To ensure that aisles and the seating areas are kept clear, luggage racks are provided on both sides of the saloon.

Every aspect of vehicle specification that is key to the successful schoolbus operation has been taken into account with the "Scolabus 24". We have given the driver the ultimate in electronic engine, automatic gearbox and first rate brakes to make his life as drama free as possible.

The seats are made by leading suppliers of coach seats and each one meets the very tough M2 safety standard.

Every seat is fitted with a lap and diagonal seat belt. These are of the "All Age" design to ensure that irrespective of the size of the child, he or she can be transported in total safety. Moreover, each seat is individually numbered to aid child identification as well as guarding against vandalism.

The "Scolabus 24" chassis is built in our plant in Brescia, Italy whilst the bodywork is built in France. Using the highest quality standards of manufacture allows us to offer the ultimate in safe, comfortable transport for our schoolchildren.

The Benefits of Irisbus Technology

Power is transmitted through an Alison MD 3060 fully automatic gearbox with integral retarder. With its five speeds and torque converter it is a very simple unit to use.

Everything is taken care of by the electronic control unit. This makes a direct contribution to safety as it frees the driver to concentrate on the road conditions and ensure that the schoolchildren in his charge arrive at their destination safely.

Obviously, no schoolbus can be compromised by a braking system that is anything less than superb. The Irisbus "Scolabus 24" benefits from years of development expertise by Iveco engineers. The full air system benefits from a front axle having disc brakes carefully matched to drum brakes at the rear.

Passenger comfort is assured by the Irisbus "Scolabus 24" riding easily on full air suspension for both axles. Not only does this isolate the occupants from much of the worst of the road surfaces but it also offers protection to body and chassis components thereby contributing to reduced operating costs.

The bodywork is framed by a stainless steel structure with polyester body panels. The complete body meets the very stringent European R66 legislation. This lays down construction criteria to prevent the roof collapsing onto the occupants in the event of a rollover incident.

Safe entry to the saloon is guaranteed with the fitment of five non-slip steps (To DDA Requirements). The front row of seats has been carefully arranged to give a free flow of passengers to their seats under the watchful gaze of the driver.

The bodywork is manufactured by "Vehixel", a leading supplier in the French market. In addition to being a very attractive addition to the urban environment it cloaks a safe, sound design.

Security on board is assured by the driver-operated powered plug-type passenger door whilst a quick exit in the event of an incident can be made through the offside rear emergency door.

To ensure maximum safe all-round visibility, the "Scolabus 24" has a one-piece tintedwindscreen and bonded, tintedsaloon glazing. These aresupplemented by large rear viewmirrors providing a superb fieldof view.

The Irisbus Scolabus 24 - Seating plan

The strength of the "Scolabus 24" lies in its tough, "C" section chassis frame. Made from high tensile steel, it provides the integrity and reassurance that is so fundamental to the peace of mind of operators in this safety sensitive area.

Full corrosion protection is provided to ensure a long, trouble-free life leading to a high residual value.
