Message from the Editor in Chief

A very happy and prosperous 2013 to you and a hearty welcome to our re-launched magazine! The ushering of a New Year gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and simultaneously allows us to gain a new perspective on all aspects of our lives.

The arrival of each new year usually brings with it a desire to make changes. This year we intend to develop a more interactive and engaging relationship with all team members. This issue builds on the great legacy of the Sage and PanOrama as we build one communication channel that keeps our team members across the SLJ Group updated about the monthly happenings within the organisation.

This new e-zine plans to merge the best of both our old magazines and will feature updates about our new programmes and new partnerships, success stories from our divisional units and sporting teams, event information as well as industry related articles. This will be the platform for you to share your invaluable views with us. I encourage you to read our monthly Sage eZines and eagerly anticipate your feedback, suggestions and comments on all matters.

We believe that these enhancements will enable Group HR to improve its effectiveness as the common and unifying voice across the SLJ Group. Therefore, I encourage all of you to make use of this platform to remain connected with us. Let me reiterate that we welcome all contributions so that we can make this e-zine a place for our collective voices. If you have articles you wish to

share, please let us know.

If you miss an edition, you can catch up by visiting the Intranet to view the archives of our past e-zines.

On behalf of the NEW SAGE Committee, I would once again like to wish you a very successful and productive 2013.

Enjoy and we hope to hear from you soon.

1. What is a Unit Trust?

A Unit Trust is an investment instrument in which the savings of many individuals are pooled together in a Fund, and is managed by a professional fund manager. Investors’ ownership in the fund is determined by the number of units they hold. These investors are called unit holders. Unit Trusts in Jamaica are governed by the provisions of the Unit Trust & Securities Acts and are regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC), a government body established to regulate the operations of certain financial institutions.

HEALTH MATTERSKids Health: The ADHD Factor

With the beginning of a new year the preparations for GSAT should now be well underway. Extra lessons, increased study times, mounting peer pressure - with all this excitement, how do you know if your child is learning? Do they seem uninterested in going to school? Are they happy- or do they seem distracted or always distant? Do they show signs of impulsiveness or hyperactive? Well, it could be that your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder more commonly called ADHD.

ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it, though it’s not yet understood why.

You should note that kids with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what’s expected of them but have trouble following through because they cannot sit still, pay attention, or attend to details.

Of course, all kids (especially younger ones) act this way at times, particularly when they’re anxious or excited. However, the difference with ADHD is that symptoms are present over a longer period of time and occur in different settings. They impair a child’s ability to function socially, academically, and at home.

The good news is that with proper treatment, kids with ADHD can learn to successfully live with and manage their symptoms.

Causes of ADHD

True: ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, too much sugar, or vaccines.

ADHD has biological origins that are not yet clearly understood. No single cause has been identified, but researchers are exploring a number of possible genetic and environmental links. Studies have shown that many kids with ADHD have a close relative who also has the disorder.

Although experts are unsure whether this is a cause of the disorder, they have found that certain areas of the brain are about 5% to 10% smaller in size and activity in kids with ADHD. Chemical changes in the brain also have been found.

Research also links smoking during pregnancy to later ADHD in a child. Other risk factors may include premature delivery, very low birth weight, and injuries to the brain at birth. Some studies have even suggested a link between excessive early television watching and future attention problems.

Parents, should not confuse ADHD with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), Mood or Anxiety Disorders and Learning Disabilities especially Dyslexia.

Treating ADHD

ADHD can’t be cured, but it can be successfully managed. Your child’s doctor will work with you to develop an individualized, long-term plan. The goal is to help a child learn to control his or her own behavior and to help families create an atmosphere in which this is most likely to happen.

In most cases, ADHD is best treated with a combination of medication and behavior therapy. Any good treatment plan will require close follow-up and monitoring, and your doctor may make adjustments along the way. Because it’s important for parents to actively participate in their child’s treatment plan, parent education is also considered an important part of ADHD management.

Remember that, you are a stronger advocate for your child when you foster good partnerships with everyone involved in your child’s treatment — that includes teachers, doctors, therapists, and even other family members. Take advantage of all the support and education that’s available, and you’ll help your child navigate toward success.

Visit www.kidshealth.org for more information on ADHD an more health issues affecting our children.

Have a good one!

While some children exhibit mostly inattentive behaviors and others predominantly hyperactive and impulsive, the majority of those with ADHD have a combination of both, which may make it very difficult for them to function in school, and create a lot of conflict at home.

Symptoms of hyperactive or impulsive ADHD:

• Fidgeting or squirming, trouble staying in one place or waiting his turn

• Excessive running and climbing

• Trouble playing quietly• Extreme impatience• Always seems to be “on the

go” or “driven by a motor”• Excessive talking or

interrupting, blurting out answers

Symptoms of inattentive ADHD:

• Makes careless mistakes• Is easily distracted• Has difficulty following

instructions• Doesn’t seem to be listening

when spoken to directly• Has trouble organizing• Avoids or dislikes sustained

effort• Is forgetful, always losing

things

Dear Mr. Williams,

Last week Monday my husband and I went to the 3rd floor of your organization to transact business. Somehow upon the completion of the transaction, my husband was unable to locate his keys and went back to the 3rd floor where he collapsed. It is against this background that I am writing this letter to express my appreciation for the care, nurture and excellent customer care that was displayed by the entire staff on the 3rd floor towards my husband, by the medical team who never left my husband’s side and the security personnel at Sagicor!

We all do it at the end of a day, week, month or year. Make plans to face another. It’s a tradition passed down through the years that constructs loft and ambitious ideas to be completed within a specified time. And this is assuming that Murphy doesn’t pay a visit to delay our “progress”... And we all know Murphy; he likes to stop by unannounced just when everything seems to be going right.

But even as we prepare for another day, week, month or year how many of us look back, look around, look within and look forward. Randall Pinkett in his presentation at the Sagicor 2013 Blast Off reminded us of the importance of pausing and looking. The message resonated and gave much food for thought; so much so that many of us became aware of our deficiencies. Honestly speaking and without judgment we get caught up in the chorus of life which is repetitive as much as it is mentally exhausting that we barely have time to pause and look.

According to the Mayans, Armageddon was scheduled for December 21, 2012 but we have been spared the worst and with the conclusion of 2012 it does provide us with time take lessons learnt and do better for 2013.

The challenge, if you choose to accept it is to pause, look back, look around, look within and look forward. Institute a review that will become your PMS (Performance Management System) but without the hormonal imbalance. You will determine the cycle and goals to be achieved. Goals can be set for anything be it fitness and health, sorting out finances, spending more time with family and friends, finding a new job or starting a new career whatever the goal may be attach a rating to it 1 – 5 (with 5 being the highest) and at the end of the cycle review and assess how far away you are from attainment.

You will that through constant monitoring and commitment success can and will achieved

Happy New Year!!!

Think you’re not in sales? Everyone is faced with sales-like situations on an almost daily basis. Whether you’re trying to get an extension on a deadline or trying to get extra ketchup for your fries, the principles for success are the same. In the corporate world the rainmaker is a key executive who attracts new business and keeps it coming through the door. Sell - Serve and Sell again!!

Tip! Tip!

Call for Action. Be brave.

5Prospective customers need to know exactly

what their role is in closing a deal - a call to action is very important to closing any sale. What documents are required to open an account? etc.

6Recommend, advise, and assist. Be change

agents who are not afraid to push when it’s in the best interest of the client.

7A good sales agent conquers their fears

and seeks actively to win the most fruitful sales opportunities no matter how difficult the challenges may be.

8A good Sales Agent respects and always tries

to satisfy, the best interests of prospects and clients (the “win-win” part). They are also extremely dedicated to becoming top performers (the “play to win” part).

Tip! Tip!

Believe in what you’re selling.

Know your competition.

1If you have even a hint of doubt about

the value, authenticity, or quality of your offering, it will come through.

2All Sellers are Buyers, so think buying first,

selling second. Identify the needs of your customers and devise products to satisfy them.

3In almost every sales situation, there is

competition. Knowing as much as you can about any potential competition is critical to remaining competitive and attractive to potential clients.

4Be a master of market knowledge, client needs,

products and services. Brag about Product. While you don’t want to overdo it, you do want to eliminate any doubt in your prospect’s mind about why he or she should take the action you want them to take.

It’s a new year! It’s time to think smarter for better results.

Although 2012 was a bit tough for investors worldwide, there is no certain forecast for 2013.

It is therefore important that we try to develop and practice smart investment strategies to improve our chances of achieving our goals for the new year.

With the uncertain global situation, the best advice is to keep funds liquid so we have cash available to invest when good opportunities present themselves.

Start by identifying your objectives and try to stick to your financial resolutions for future stability. Stick to your budget and try to reduce your debt. Control your spending. Less debt means more funds available to invest.

You don’t need to have large sums of cash to invest. There are investment options available for a wide range of investors.

It’s a good idea to at least have a basic understanding of the financial products in which you are investing and try to stay up to date with current market trends. The more knowledgeable

you are, the more realistic your expectation will be.

It’s not advisable that we invest funds that we cannot afford to lose. Decide how much risk you are willing to take, do your regular research and learn the costs associated with investing. Try to also set aside funds for emergencies.

If you are already invested, it’s best to stay invested. Don’t pull out of the market in low periods, instead hold on for better opportunities.

For expert advice, feel free to speak with a Sagicor Investments advisor. They will make recommendations and create a tailored guide to help you Build your Success.

SPORTS RAVEInternational Football Review

English Premier LeaguePeter Odemwingie’s late equaliser earned West Brom a share of the spoils as Aston Villa let slip a two-goal lead to remain in the Barclays Premier League bottom three. Christian Benteke opened the scoring with a superb finish and Gabriel Agbonlahor doubled Villa’s lead before half-time. Albion skipper Chris Brunt pulled a goal back early in the second half and then QPR transfer window target Odemwingie equalised seven minutes from time.

Joe Cole’s first West Ham goal since his return to the club earned the hosts a deserved point as Loic Remy was denied a dream debut for QPR in the Premier League clash at Upton Park. Remy scored 14 minutes into his maiden appearance following his £8 million signing from Marseille, but the Hammers were on top throughout, only to find Julio Cesar in inspired form as he twice denied Marouane Chamakh, who might have had a first-half penalty when Clint Hill wrestled him to the ground.

Jonathan de Guzman netted a second half double as Swansea warmed up for their midweek cup date against Chelsea with victory over Stoke at the Liberty Stadium. After a sluggish, goalless first half, Ben Davies gave the hosts the lead shortly after the break with his first senior goal. De Guzman dispatched a curling free-kick into the top corner just before the hour, then coolly finished from Danny Graham’s lovely pass before Michael Owen got a late consolation with his first goal for Stoke.

David Silva struck in each half as champions Manchester City cut Manchester United’s lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League to four points. The Spaniard fired home a rebound after just two minutes and then struck a sublime second in the 69th minute as the champions enjoyed a comfortable win over Fulham at the Etihad Stadium. City will hope the victory puts pressure back on United ahead of their tricky trip to Tottenham.

Norwich must be sick of the sight of striker Luis Suarez as he scored his seventh goal in three matches against them to help Liverpool return to winning ways. The Canaries’ nemesis, after hat-tricks in his previous two outings against them, struck the second after Jordan Henderson’s well-taken opener. New £12million signing Daniel Sturridge became the first Reds player since Ray Kennedy in 1974 to score in his first three matches before Steven Gerrard’s strike and Ryan Bennett’s own goal completed the rout. It took Liverpool’s tally against Norwich in the last three league matches to 13, most of which have gone to Suarez.

Clint Dempsey struck two minutes into injury time for Tottenham to rain on Robin van Persie’s parade at White Hart Lane. Van Persie had put Manchester United on course for a vital win when he scored his sixth goal against Spurs, but after a sustained period of pressure, Dempsey delivered Andre Villas-Boas’

men a thrilling equaliser with less than 60 seconds of the match remaining. The draw means United are now just five points ahead of Manchester City after Roberto Mancini’s men after their win over Fulham.

Rafael Benitez finally enjoyed some home comfort as Chelsea avoided throwing away another two-goal lead by clinging on to beat Arsenal. It was very nearly Groundhog Day at snowy Stamford Bridge, with the Gunners making amends for an appalling first-half performance through Theo Walcott’s first goal since signing his new contract. But it was not enough to overturn the two-goal head start they gifted Chelsea, with Juan Mata’s strike and Frank Lampard’s penalty - his 195th goal for the club - ultimately proving the difference. A Premier League double over Arsenal also saw the third-placed Blues move 11 points clear of their opponents and cast serious doubt over the top-four credentials of Arsene Wenger’s men.

Arsenal kickstarted their Premier League campaign as they blew West Ham away with four goals in the space of 11 minutes at the start of the second half to run out 5-1 winners at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners had slumped to successive defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea to leave them facing an uphill battle to regain a place in the top four.

English FA CupFernando Torres rescued Chelsea and Rafael Benitez from FA Cup humiliation as the holders denied Brentford arguably the biggest scalp of all in this season of shocks in a 2-2 draw. Torres broke his latest miserable run in front of goal with his first of 2013, and one of the most important of his Blues career, to prevent the European champions crashing out of their second competition in five days and sixth in just six months.

Tottenham bowed out of the FA Cup at the fourth-round stage as they were beaten at Championship side Leeds. With Jermain Defoe reportedly injured and Emmanuel Adebayor on international duty, manager Andre Villas-Boas went into the Elland Road clash without a recognised striker and it showed as Spurs, Clint Dempsey’s consolation strike aside, repeatedly failed in front of goal.

Striker Matt Smith chose the perfect occasion to score his first goals at Boundary Park as his first-half double helped League One Oldham produce an FA Cup upset in beating Liverpool. The 23-year-old, who 18 months ago was playing non-league football with Solihull Moors, had the best day of his fragmented professional career after giving the Reds’ defence a torrid time. It was the first time Liverpool had been beaten away from home in the FA Cup by a team at least two divisions below them since defeat at non-league Worcester City in 1959. Oldham, with only one win in their last nine games, had beaten progressively higher-ranked opposition in Kidderminster, Doncaster and Nottingham Forest to reach the fourth round for the first time

in five years.

Elsewhere Manchester City beat Stoke 1-0; Arsenal earned a 3-2 victory over Brighton and Manchester ran out 4-1 winners over Fulham to all book their places in the fifth round.

Notable matches in the next round are Arsenal v Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates Stadium, Manchester City v Leeds United at Etihad Stadium, Oldham Athletic host Everton and Manchester United take on Reading at Old Trafford. Defending Champions Chelsea will have to overcome a fourth replay in order to take on Middlesborough at The Riverside Stadium. All these matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday February 16, 2013.

Spanish Primera DivisionReal Madrid set aside their off-field distractions to sweep aside Getafe in a one-sided Primera Division encounter. Cristiano Ronaldo took centre stage for Jose Mourinho’s side as he fired in a second-half hat-trick to take his tally in the league this season to 21 from as many games. This display will go some way to improving the mood in the Madrid camp, after a week spent denying allegations of a rift between Mourinho and a group of key players at the Bernabeu.

Lionel Messi celebrated another goalscoring milestone with four more as Barcelona demolished 10-man Osasuna 5-1 at the Nou Camp. The Argentinian went one better than great rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick earlier in the evening as he was part of a Barca side who utterly outclassed woefully inferior opposition. His second was his 200th goal in the Primera Division, another landmark feat in his ever-growing list of achievements. The fourth brought his total in the league this term to 33 and he is on track to match last season’s barely-believable 50. Seventeen more are needed from 17 games; only for Messi would that be considered simple. And next up for him, albeit in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals: Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Athletic Bilbao gained some measure of revenge for last season’s Europa League final as they inflicted just a fourth league defeat of the season on Atletico Madrid with a 3-0 win at San Mames. Both Thibaut Courtois and Gorka Iraizoz had produced remarkable saves from Markel Susaeta and Emre respectively to keep the scores level at half-time, but the hosts were in front within five minutes of the restart as Mikel San Jose nodded home from Susaeta’s corner. With Barcelona having already won earlier in the day, Atletico knew the pressure was on to keep the gap at the top down to eight points but - without the injured Radamel Falcao - they never really got going and indeed could have been on the end of an even heavier beating had it not been for some heroics by Courtois.
