Blu-ray Disc — an overview

Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format supported by a group of theworld's leading consumer electronics and personal computer manufacturers, as well asmajor studios. It was developed to enable high-definition (HD) video and new forms ofinteractive entertainment.

Higher capacity, higher quality

BD uses a shorter-wavelength blue-violet laser that can focus to a muchsmaller spot size compared to DVD’sred laser. This allows data to bepacked more tightly and stored inless space, giving a BD disc morethan five times the capacity of a DVDVideo disc*1. One BD disc can holdup to two hours of HDTV material (oreleven hours of SDTV material)*2.
