Get ready to Fly! This spring we are honoring Rina Liebeskind on her 10th anniversary as our Education Director. A spectacular afternoon and evening is in the works for you and your whole family to share. Flying Chai features an Israeli themed dinner, entertainment, a raffle, a fundraiser and more. There will be activities for both kids and adults. It is the definitive event to cap our special Scholar-in-Residence weekend. The Special Events Committee is working diligently to keep the cost of Flying Chai very reasonable, but we will need your help.

• The first thing you can do to join honoring Rina is to put the date on your calendar. Flying Chai will start at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 15th at the JCC.

• Next, we need pictures of Rina with your family (group or individual) for a montage. Old or new, we need them all! Send your pictures to Steve at [email protected]. Physical pictures can be sent to the office with your name and contact information on the back. We will scan and return them. We are aiming for hundreds of pictures, so every photo is important to the effort.

• We are asking every student that Rina has ever helped in her work at Or Chadash, THA, JCC and everywhere else she has served to add their name and a message (140 character maximum) to the Tribute Book. It will be a keepsake that Rina will truly treasure. The cost is $18 per name/message.

• If you have a company or an individual that wishes to have special recognition honoring Rina and help with the fundraising, we're providing a Digital Accolade Projection that will run on the big screen in the JCC's ballroom during Flying Chai. As an additional thank you, the program will be accessible through our website following the event. There will also be opportunities to be a key sponsor. The cost is very reasonable, so please contact Sheila Peress Velez at [email protected] for details.

Flying Chai is our spring event. You may attend Flying Chai without participating in the Scholar-in-Residence program. Please invite your friends and family to attend. Questions should be addressed to: Steve Schuldenfrei [email protected].

From Our President

2018 is off to a remarkable start and brings us even MORE GOOD NEWS! Over the last few years, we have been promising that we would contract for a full audit, and I am

very happy to let everyone know that the audit has been completed and, thanks to the extra efforts of Jim Neal and Marty Zuckerman, we have received very positive results. We will have more detailed report for everyone at the annual meeting on May 7th.

PARTICIPATE! I have been encouraging you all to get involved in our congregation activities, and we actually have

some exciting ways to do so. First on the calendar is the Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, February 10th. Whether you like to play cards or

not, this will be a great evening of food, friends, music and fun. Tickets available now. On Sunday, February 18th, we will have our Town Hall meeting on campus at 3:00 pm. This is your chance to not

only hear about the latest OC25 to provide long range strategic planning, but to also share your thoughts on the matter. Anybody interested in getting more involved can contact Jeff Jacobson or Alan Kalmikoff at the OC office during regular business hours.

Don’t forget about our second fundraising event on April 15th, when we will enjoy the Flying Chai event. This will culminate our Festival of Education weekend honoring Rina Liebeskind and the unbelievable work she has done with our religious school, the only accredited reformed Jewish religious school in Arizona.

In addition to these programs and events, there are opportunities get involved with the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and the Schmooze and Service group. We encourage everyone to be active in our beloved community, and EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THEIR OWN WAY!!

We really do have a warm and welcoming community where all can experience God, and the best way to experience it is to get involved and PARTICIPATE!

Benjamin Vogel, Congregation Or Chadash President

Casino Night registration is in full swing. The event promises to be one of our biggest fundraisers ever and is Saturday, February 10th, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Sign up today, and bring your friends to a great dinner dance with wonderful food and music, combined with fun for all, while contributing to our congregation! There will be tours of the incredible and historical Scottish Rite Cathedral, a hidden treasure of the Sonoran Desert.

I am very proud to be a part of OC25 which has been developing during the past couple of months. This program seeks your involvement as experienced, knowledgeable and resourceful members of the congregation, who yearn to have a voice in long range goals of Or Chadash. On

Sunday, February 18th at 3:00 p.m. in the community room, current OC25 participants will hold a Town Hall meeting. What does that mean? The expressed objective of OC25 is to create a long range strategic plan that will help guide the future board of directors and the congregation, as a whole. At this particular meeting, we want to hear from you, and we will do the listening!

Each of the OC25 Groups: governance, finance, operations and systems, properties and facilities, marketing and communications, fundraising and legacy and spiritual direction of the synagogue, are organizing to contribute their visions to the strategic plan, which will be a work in progress as we go forward.

[email protected] has been designated as the go to email address to inquire about joining one of the groups, asking questions about the initiative and its goals, and about Or Chadash in general. As staff liaison, I have enjoyed some wonderful discussions (and lunches), meeting and conversing with members of the congregation who are becoming reenergized about the future of Jewish life in Tucson and at Or Chadash.

Don’t sit around waiting for someone to call. Get up and take the initiative to join, as your voice is valued, and you have much to contribute. And please come to the Town Hall on Sunday, February 18th. This is your congregation. Be a part of it.

L’shalom, Alan Kalmikoff, Administrator

Synagogue Funding Group (SFG) Religious School and Family Education Programming

For the last several years, the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona has been subsidizing our Religious School through their Aaron Alexander Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. This year through the Planning and Allocations Committee, a new initiative was formed, and the SFG has allocated a sum based on the number of members 18 years old and younger. At Or Chadash, we have directed these funds towards expanding our outreach in the Northwest, strengthening our OCTY youth group and engaging young families. The money that the Federation and the SFG are contributing will help us reach a greater number of people who will benefit from our programming.

Tucson is successfully partnering with the Israeli communities of Kiryat Malachi and Hof Ashkelon, providing the opportunity for our

communities to connect and interpersonal relationships to flourish.

Beneath your personality, there’s a radiant field of awareness, free from negativity and connected to the aliveness of the present moment. Integral Jewish Meditation brings to life your potential for awakening in a direct and experiential way, freeing you from stress and opening you to joy, wellness, and peace. It includes chanting (t’filah), focused intention (kavanah) and silent, present moment awareness. Sample Reb Brian Yosef’s meditation online at: www.torahofawakening.com.

Saving lives after disasters and in remote areas of the world with Dr. Kenneth Iserson

We often see news videos and hear reports about doctors and nurses helping disaster victims and providing care throughout the world. What is it really like—especially in tourist sites that have been destroyed and in countries with marginal healthcare systems? Having worked on all seven continents (including a 1 ½ years in Antarctica), Ken Iserson, M.D., will recount his experiences after Hurricanes Katrina (New Orleans), Maria (Puerto Rico), and Ike (Galveston), as well as in the South Pacific, Asia, Africa, and rural Central and South America. Photos, videos and great stories. You’ll never look at the world quite the same way again.

Synagogue Life

Twenty of our sisters planned, bought, prepared, and served dinner and provided gifts on Christmas eve, and again on Christmas day, to

women who experience homelessness at the Sister Jose Women’s Center. On Sunday, December 24th, we met at 1:30 p.m. at the Center and rolled up our sleeves and began prepping the necessary ingredients, cooking and baking for both evenings. We served roast turkey, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots, cranberry sauce, homemade cornbread, and pies, pies, and more pies on Christmas Eve. Cantor Janece Cohen carved the four turkeys expertly, and then picked up her guitar and led the ladies in Christmas carols. They loved it! The next day, we served baked spiral hams (yes, none of us had ever done that before!) potatoes au gratin, broccoli, rolls, and tapioca pudding, and more pies. Gift bags with cosmetics were at each lady’s place. What a mitzvah! And very much appreciated. But most enjoyable was experiencing our Sisterhood’s outpouring generosity in time and donations – working together, laughing together, and really getting to know each other, all while bringing almost 50 smiles and thank yous from courageous, homeless women. A special thank you to Harriet Kronman for her commitment to Sisterhood, Sister Jose’s, and Social Action for organizing this huge undertaking, and to Jim Liebeskind for delivering everything to the Center.

WHAT’S NEXT?

• On Wednesday, February 7th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Or Chadash, we are encouraging all women, members or not, to join us for an open discussion, a brainstorming program designed to develop Sisterhood programs and activities for the coming year. What have we accomplished? Where can we improve? What would YOU like to do? WHO would you like to hear from? HOW can you be involved? All of these questions and topics will be addressed, so please join us. This is YOUR Sisterhood and your voice counts! RSVP [email protected] or 520-241-4381.

• SAVE THE DATE…Wednesday, March 7th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. will be the next Lilith Salon at the home of Dana Adler. Please note the time change, as requested from some of the participants. More information will be provided later.

SISTERHOOD AT ITS BEST

Tuesday, February 20th at 12:00 noon The Two Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman

Brooklyn, 1947: In the midst of a blizzard, in a two-family brownstone, two babies are born, minutes apart. The mothers are sisters by marriage: dutiful, quiet Rose, who wants nothing more than to please her difficult husband; and warm, generous Helen, the exhausted mother of four rambunctious boys who seem to need her less and less each day. Raising their families side by side, supporting one another, Rose and Helen share an impenetrable bond forged before and during that dramatic winter night.

Thirty congregants attended Shabbat services on January 20th, followed by a delicious brunch to honor and recognize the support that our many Solo Seniors have made to our Or Chadash family. We socialized and enjoyed music from Klezmerkaba, Tucson’s premier Klezmer ensemble.

The Social Action Committee’s Mission is to support the Jewish tenets of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Gimilut Chasidim (Acts of Loving Kindness). Our members participate individually and in group activities. We usually meet the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Check the Congregational calendar. Not a meeting person? That’s okay. You are still welcome to join us at any of the events below. At Wright Elementary, our members help students with reading and math in the classroom and in the remedial after-school program. We are planning a book drive for the end of the school year. We work together with PCICEO (Pima County Interfaith Civic Education Organization) to bring current issues of social justice to the Congregation. Recently, we held a forum on the issue of DACA (Deferred

Action for Childhood Arrivals) to make our congregants and the community aware of the situation, and to take action to contact our Congressmen and Congresswomen. We need to keep the pressure on.

Our sandwich team prepares a lunch for the men at Primavera Men’s Shelter once a month, and our Sisterhood coordinates volunteers at Sister Jose Women’s Center.

We expect to participate in Poz Café with TIHAN (Tucson Interfaith HIV/Aids Network) this spring.

We work with Habitat for Humanity twice a year, sometimes with other congregations. All skill levels are welcome. April 5th with be the next Habitat project.

You are more than welcome to join us for any of these projects. Please contact me with your interest and ideas.

FEEL THE CONNECTION (L'DOR V'DOR)

Yahrzeit/Memorial Plaques

"Feel" your loved one’s presence each time you come to synagogue.

It is a widely observed Jewish tradition to commemorate those who have departed on a dedicated memorial wall. At Congregation Or Chadash, such a wall graces our Community Room. Plaques are inscribed with the English and Hebrew names of the departed along with the date of passing. Beside each plaque is a memorial light, which is lit on the Yahrzeit and for Yizkor services. All this is available for a donation of $400. For additional information, please contact the office at 512-8500.
