PERSPECTIVES

Maintain transport facilitiesfor their durability

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Today, the government is working hard toshape the nation into a modern, developed one.As part of the lofty plan, it is improving allinfrastructures for equitable development of allparts of the Union.

As smooth transport is the mostfundamental requirement for regionaldevelopment, the government is buildingnetworks of transport facilities throughout thenation to achieve the goal. It is also building roadbridges. Katha and Bhamo are two of the regionswhere the government is constructinginfrastructural buildings for nationaldevelopment.

Katha and Bhamo are far from transportways, and in consequence, they once laggedbehind other regions in development. Katha-Moetagyi Railroad has been put into commissionrecently. The railroad is due to be extended toBhamo from Moetagyi. Katha-Sinkhan RoadProject is ongoing now.

Ayeyawady Bridge (Sinkhan) is underconstruction in Katha District. The broad cresttype bridge has a two-lane motorway and onerailroad on it. When the projects are completed, the transport of the regions will get smoother.

With Bhamo University, University ofComputer Studies, and TechnologicalUniversity, Bhamo is now in a position to makesubstantial contribution towards humanresource development of the nation. Thegovernment has opened many health carefacilities and upgraded many old ones includingBhamo General Hospital. So, local people nowhave easy access to better health care.

So far, the government has constructedgreat numbers of infrastructural buildingsacross the Union, regardless of location and size.In response, the people have to work togetherfor maintenance and durability of theconstructed infrastructural buildings in thetransport, economic, education, health and socialsectors, because they have begun to enjoyincreased trade, which is the fruit of the hardwork for better transport.

Ultimately Marjahcan only be stable oncethe local governmentprovides enough jobs andeconomic opportunities tokeep the local populationon its side, eradicatingconditions that breedmilitancy, analysts say.

“Population studieshad already shown thatusing this osteoporosisdrug ... was associatedwith a higher incidence ofarrhythmia, or atrial fi-brillation,” he said.

“What we’ve foundfor the first time in labo-ratory experiments is acause and effect.”

“It appears that thesedrugs trigger the heart’s

atrial cells to become agi-tated and overexcited,causing a pacemaker-likeeffect.”

Atrial fibrillation canallow blood to pool in ar-eas of the heart and, even-tually, these form clots. Astroke occurs if one ofthese clots breaks free andthen blocks an artery lead-ing to the brain.

3000-year-old city walldiscovered in Jerusalem

JERUSSALEM, 24 Feb— Israeli archaeologists dis-covered a section of an ancient city wall in Jerusalemthat is believed to be built by Biblical King Solomonaround the tenth century BC, The Hebrew Universityof Jerusalem said on Monday.

“A comparison of this latest finding with city wallsand gates from the period of the First Temple, as wellas pottery found at the site, enable us to postulatewith a great degree of assurance that the wall thathas been revealed is that which was built by KingSolomon in Jerusalem in the latter part of the tenthcentury BC,” said the excavation director Dr EilatMazar.

The revealed city wall, 70 metres long and sixmetres high, is located near the Mount Temple in theOld City of Jerusalem.

Archaeologists also found a royal building anda gatehouse at the site over the three-month excava-tion. Mazar and her colleagues discovered a largeamount of pottery shards, remnants of 1.5-meter-highstorage jars, at the ground floor of the royalbuilding.

They noted an inscription in ancient Hebrew onone of the jars, which indicates that it belonged to ahigh-level government official, as well as seal impres-sions on jar handles with the word “to the king.” Ar-chaeologists believe they are proofs that the jars wereused by the monarchy.

China to release pollution-fightingfish in lake

SHANGHAI, 24 Feb —Authorities in easternChina have said they willrelease 20 million algae-eating fish into one of thenation’s most scenic lakesthat has been ravaged bypollution.

Taihu Lake, whichstraddles Zhejiang andJiangsu Provinces, hasbeen severely polluted bysewage as well as indus-trial and agriculturalwaste, triggering a blue-green algae plague.

Authorities started us-ing fish to try to clean up

the lake in February lastyear when they released10 million mostly greenand silver carp into thewater, after the algaetainted the drinking sup-ply of millions of resi-dents.

Over the next fewdays, around 20 millionmore algae-eating fishwill be released into thewater, the Taihu LakeFisheries ManagementCommittee said in a state-ment on Monday.

The campaign, fundedby the government and

public donations, cost atotal of 8.6 million yuan(1.3 million dollars), ac-cording to the statement.

A silver carp can con-sume 50 kilogrammes(110 pounds) of algae andother plankton in its life-time while gaining onlyone kilogramme inweight, authorities havesaid.

Millions of algae-eat-ing fish have been used inthe past to clean up Taihuand other lakes, with pre-vious efforts hailed as aboon for the local fishingindustry despite concernsover consumption of fishthat have feasted on tox-ins.—Internet

HONG KONG, 24 Feb —Chinese researchers saygreen tea may help fightglaucoma and other eyediseases.

The study, published inthe American ChemicalSociety’s Journal of Agri-cultural and Food Chem-istry, finds the “catechins”in green tea — responsi-ble for much of its stronganti-oxidant effect — passfrom the stomach andgastrointestinal tract intothe tissues of the eye andraise the possibility drink-ing green tea may helpprevent eye diseases.

Chi Pui Pang of TheChinese University ofHong Kong and col-leagues analyzed the eyetissues of laboratory ratsthat drank green tea. Theyfound the retina absorbedthe highest levels of the

catchin gallocatechin, while the aqueous humortended to absorb anotherknown as epigallocate-chin.

The effects of greentea catechins in reducingharmful oxidative stressin the eye lasted for up to20 hours, the study says.

“Our results indicatethat green tea consump-tion could benefit the eyeagainst oxidative stress,”the study authors say in astatement.—Internet

COLD SPRING HARBOR, 24 Feb — USneuroscientists say their experiments withfruit flies have led to the discovery of aprotein that regulates the erasure of short-term memories.

The Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) Labo-ratory researchers say they’ve discoveredthat three kinds of forgetting — all involv-ing the erasure of short-term memory —are regulated within neurons by the activ-ity of a protein called Rac.

The team, led by Professor Yi Zhong, examined the molecular basis of three dif-ferent types of memory erasure. One kindof erasure is associated with gradual short-term memory loss; another entails an acute, rapid removal of short-term memory, andthe third involves a kind of erasure associ-

ated with new information that interfereswith an existing short-term memory.

In all three the team found the processof forgetting is mediated by a mechanismdependent upon the activity level of Rac,a type of protein known to act, among otherthings, as regulators of the cytoskeleton, the superstructure of cells.

“The molecular basis of short-termmemory really has been overlooked bythe neuroscience community,” Zhongsaid. “It has been widely assumed thatsuch memory is degraded through pas-sive cellular processes. Our experimentschallenge the notion by providing evi-dence of a dedicated mechanism for re-moving several kinds of short-termmemories.”—Internet

BEIJING, 24 Feb—It was the oddest of apologies. The words “deeply irresponsible” and “selfish” were used, as was a hand-
