PERSPECTIVES
Improve traditional Myanmarmedicine to reach international level
Myanmar, a land resource-rich country, has high coverage of forests and vegetationin many regions. In the nation’s large wood-lands are a wide variety of species of invalu-able, rare herbs, from which traditionalmedicines can be manufactured to improvethe health of human beings.
Being compounded of herbs, tubers andbulbs that are available in many regionsacross the nation, traditional Myanmar medi-cines have only few side effects and are goodfor the health of the people.
Today, there has been a great change inlifestyles and cooking methods around theworld, thus culminating in many new dis-eases. In some cases, traditional medicinesare more effective than western ones.
Combined therapies of traditional andmodern medicines can make such diseases astuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, diarrhea, anddysentery go away.
Originally, traditional medicines are po-tent with fewer side effects. So, some coun-tries have turned to research on traditionalmedicine to produce traditional medicineson a broader scale in place of modern drugs.
So, all are to maintain methods of com-pounding effective traditional medicines andto conserve the sources of herbs and medici-nal components. And those responsible areto improve the traditional Myanmar medi-cine and nurture the youth for greater devel-opment of human resources for ensuringflourishing of traditional medicine.
Today, many other countries have recog-nized the effectiveness of traditionalMyanmar medicines. Therefore, traditionalMyanmar medicines will establish a foot-hold in the international drug market if tra-ditional Myanmar medicines, a legacy left byour forefathers, are produced with modernmethods of the international standard.

Coco Island in Myanmar watersByline & Photos: Yan Naing Win (Hline)
Cocogyun Township in southern Yangon Divisionis difficult of access because it is located between theBay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, 260 miles southwestof Yangon. Being composed of 12 islands, the townshipis bounded by Kyet Island on the east; AndamanIsland on the west; Phinat Island and Zabwe Island onthe north; and Jerry Island and Cocolay Island on thesouth.
In the township, low plains lie in the northeasternpart. The ground is even in the southern part. Theslope on the beach is rocky with many alluvial floodplains.
The seawater is transparent as deep as about 40feet. Around the Coco Island are coral reefs and rockmasses in high quantity. Mountain ranges stretchbetween north and south in the township. There, thehighest mountain is 366 feet high.
Being situated in the sea, it has a temperate climatepattern. Its average annual rainfall is about 95 inches, and average temperature is 28 degree centigrade. Itdoes not have any steams that flow all year round. So,Cocogyun Dam with a water storage capacity of 49million gallons was constructed in 1991, and the

project was completed in 1993. The earthen type damis some 800 feet from the sea. About 30,000 gallons offreshwater are pumped to the town a day with the useof a 52 HP waterworks.
It grows coconut, mango, guava, banana and fruittrees of many other species, landscaping plants, andshade trees. It also grows paddy just for localconsumption. It has a 10-acre farmland of seasonalcrops. It raises several species of farm animals such ascow, chicken and duck, especially goat. Its majorbusinesses are coconut farming, production ofmangrove tree trunks, and fishing.
The majority of its population is Bamar, and otherraces are Mon, Kayin, Rakhine and Chin. It has 180households or a population of about 1000—servicepersonnel, fishermen, sculptors, bead makers, livestockbreeders, and fishery entrepreneurs.
Since 1 June 1992, the Myanma Electric PowerEnterprise has supplied electric power to the townfrom 6 pm to 11 pm daily with the use of 150 KVA
generator. Now, the 14 miles and three furlongs longbypass is in the process of being upgraded into a 12-foot-wide gravel road.
It has a 1193 feet long landing stage, plus awooden landing stage. In the education sector, it has
a basic education high school furnished with threecomputer sets and a printer, and 25 teachers and over200 students. Now, the principal and teachers aretrying to improve the education of the township. It
opens a pre-primary school. Cocogyun TownshipHospital was opened in 1989, and it has beenupgraded to a 25-bed facility with a doctor, a dentist, two nurses, one assistant nurse, five general workers, and a clerk.
Staff member Daw Htay Yee Win of the MyanmaPosts and Telecommunications said that with four IPStars and 50 exchange phones, the township couldcontact any other place around the world.
Cocogyun Township has a fire service station. In2005, it got a fire engine. The fire service station isconstituted with an officer, five other ranks, and 50auxiliary fire brigade members.
The township has a police station, a townshipcourt, a township law office, Immigration and NationalRegistration Department, and Information and PublicRelations Department.
The IPRD has opened a library and a Myawadyand MRTV retransmitting station there to broaden thehorizons of the township dwellers.
Interesting places in the region are JinanarajinPagoda, Dipa Pagoda, the plain and Kywet island inthe eastern part of the township, Jerry Island in thesouthern part, and the lighthouse on Mingalar Island.
Therefore, it is fair to say that the existence ofCoco Island lends interest to the Myanmar’s waters.

Lebanon’s Hariri onlandmark Syria visitDAMASCUS, 20 Dec — Lebanese Prime Minister
Saad Hariri began a landmark visit to his country’sformer powerbroker Syria on Saturday, on a two-daymission aimed at rebuilding ties between the two Arabneighbours.
It was Hariri’s first trip to Damascus since the 2005assassination of his father, ex-prime minister RafiqHariri — a killing that he and his US-backed allies inBeirut blamed on Syria.
Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad gave Hariri awarm welcome at the capital’s Tishrin palace, wherethe two young leaders shook hands and embracedbefore going into one-on-one talks.
They met for three hours, stressing the need to setup “privileged and strategic ties” between the twocountries to overcome years of tensions, officials said.
The meeting between Assad and Hariri, who be-came Lebanon’s Premier last month, helped to “dis-pel the past (differences),” Syrian presidential adviserBouthaina Shaaban told reporters after the talks.
“There is no doubt that the ice has been brokenbetween the two sides,” she said.
Shaaban also noted that Syria “broke with proto-col” by inviting Hariri to stay at the Tishrin guest pal-ace which is usually reserved for visiting monarchsand heads of state.—Internet

The international cli-mate talks that broughtmore than 110 leaderstogether in Copenhagenproduced “significantand positive” results,Foreign Minister YangJiechi said.

LOS ANGELES, 20Dec—US scientists havediscovered fog movingacross the south pole ofSaturn’s largest moon,Titan.
Titan looks to be theonly place in the solar sys-tem aside from Earth tohave copious quantities ofliquid (largely, liquidmethane and ethane) sit-ting on its surface.
The new discoverysuggests that Earth andTitan share yet anotherfeature, which is inextri-cably linked with that sur-
face liquid: common fog, according to researchersat the California Instituteof Technology (Caltech).
The presence of fogprovides the first directevidence for the exchangeof material between thesurface and the atmos-phere, and thus of an ac-tive hydrological cycle, which previously hadonly been known to existon Earth, the researcherssaid in a paper publishedin the latest issue ofAstrophysical JournalLetters.
Titan’s south pole isspotted “more or less eve-rywhere” with puddles ofmethane that give rise tosporadic layers of fog, said planetary astronomerMike Brown of Caltech.
The researchers madetheir discovery using datafrom the VisualandInfrared MappingSpectrometer (VIMS)onboard the Cassinispacecraft, which hasbeen observing Saturn’ssystem for the past fiveyears.

The shift to eucalyptusdiet was probablycaused, the article says,by the drift north of theAustralian continent, causing a retreat of itsrain forests and domi-nance of eucalyptustrees.
Coping with the newdiet caused adaptivechanges in the digestiveand anatomical structureof the koalas. When sci-entists measured skulls
of ancient and modernanimals, they noticeddramatic differences inthe facial skeleton, whichthey noted were probablydue to the change to atougher diet of eucalyp-tus leaves.
And the low nutritionlevels of eucalyptusleaves caused the ani-mals to develop a moresedentary, energy-con-serving lifestyle, theysaid.
“In order to accommo-date both the mechanicaldemands of their newdiet, as well as maintain-ing their auditory sophis-tication, the koala under-went substantial changesto its cranial anatomy, inparticular that of the fa-cial skeleton,”says DrJulien Louys of Univer-sity of New SouthWales’s School of Bio-logical, Earth and Envi-ronmental Sciences.
