Introduction to a Small Home Interior Paint Project

Demonstrate using the church key prying the lid open working your way around the circumference of the lid. If paint still does not seem mixed well a stir stick from the paint store can be used.

X. Pour Paint into a panShow students by pointing to area of pan that paint should fill up the lower tub portion of the pan.

Suggestion: A cardboard surface can be used to protect the floor you are pouring on and to set the paint can on, as paint will likely run down the side.

XI. Painting with the Paint Brush

Emphasize that “cutting in” is the first technique we will use to apply paint and the picture is what the surface should look like after this step is completed.

XII. Cutting In

Note: Paint is only on the distal end of the bristles and then applied around the edges and corners.

Demonstrate the pencil grip, check the reference material for details.

XIII. What if I Make a Mistake?

Note: Notice the paint mark on the trim piece on the picture on the left. This is simply wiped away with a wet rag.

Add a wet rag to the list of supplies.

XIV.Using the Paint Roller

Demonstrate how to assemble the roller, the cartridge and the handle. Continue to show how painting a wall without the extension handle would require much more squatting and reaching which would leading to fatigue.

XV. Using the Paint Roller

Note: This slide is animated and the pictures will pop up in sequence. Heavily emphasize this sequence.

XVI. Using the Roller

Use Medium length strokes in an overlapping pattern to evenly spread the paint. You do not have to worry about edges or tight corners where you have already cut in.

XVII. Two Coats

Advise the attendees they will likely need to apply multiple coats of paint. Pictures in this slide show completed project. Notice there are no signs of cut in lines.

XVIII. Disposal

Discussion: Disposal of Hazardous Waste is a major issue.

What do we do with the paint?

XIX. Disposal of Paint in a Can

Kitty litter will only work if the paint can is less than half full. Add the Kitty Litter and stir or roll the can to achieve the pictured result.

Note: If you have a can of paint that you have solidified to share with the audience it will enhance the class, but it is not mandatory.

XX. Disposal of paint in a can

Recycle card board by making a berm with kitty litter and pouring paint in.

Mix the paint and kitty litter and let it solidify. Then dispose of it.
