    IN THIS TIME of moral and polit ical crises, it is the responsibi lity of the youth of America to

    WE, as young conservati ves, believe:

    THAT foremost among the transcendent values is the individuals use of his God-given freewill, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force;

    THAT l iberty is indivisible, and that polit ical freedom cannot long exist without economicfreedom;

    THAT the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation ofinternal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice;

    THAT when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, whichtends to diminish order and liberty;

    THAT the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for

    and abuse of power;

    THAT the genius of the Constitutionthe division of powersis summed up in the clause

    delegated to the Federal government;

    THAT the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand,is the single economic system compatible wit h the requirements of personal freedom andconstitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier ofhuman needs;

    THAT when government interferes wit h the work of the market economy, it tends to reducethe moral and physical strength of the nation; that when it takes from one man to bestow

    autonomy of both;

    THAT we wil l be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the UnitedStates is secure; that history shows periods of f reedom are rare, and can existonly when free cit izens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies;

    THAT the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatestsingle threat to these liberties;

    THAT the United States should stress victory over, rather than co-existencewith, this menace; and

    THAT American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does itserve the just interests of the United States?

    Adopted i n conference at Sharon, Connecti cut, 10-13 September 1960, at the estate of Wi ll iam F. Buckley, Jr.

    DeskT o call the past few months an incredible time for American Conservatism would be anunderstatement. In a crushing condemnation of the Ruling Class and their philosophyof European-style socialism, the American publ ic selected new men and women to servetheir i nterests in capitals across the country. And across the country and in Washington,DC, many of these brash, fresh usurpers have pledged to their constituents, their base and theirchildren, that the age of big government the age of legal plunder; the age of waste and corruption;the age of American decline has met its foe. In 2008, the American people had voted for a drasticshi ft in American poli tics, but when their new leaders and their radical agenda stared them in

    At the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Sharon Statement in September, Funding Fatherand early YAFer Richard Viguerie reminded those gathered that for every hour Conservatives andlibertarians rue the name of their president, they should spend three hours thanking God that hewas elected, for if John McCain had won in 2008, and continued, as he surely would, the slow andcreeping expansion of government witnessed over the past 234 years, by the time Americans realizedour mistakes it would be too late. President Obama has given YAF and her allies a chance not beforeseen in modern United States history- things got so bad so fast that the silent majori ty of our center-

    ccording to James Carvi lle, theDemocratic Party was goingto rule American politics forthe next forty years becauseof two words: young people.

    in the wake of t he 2008 elections. Af terall, two out of every three Americansbetween the ages of 18 and 30 voted forPresident Obama. Quite the blowout.

    But after the Republican gains madeon November 2, Carvilles proclaimedDemocratic dominance seems suspectat best, and it looks like the countrysdisenchantment with the Obamaadministration has spread down into even

    young America. Be it because they are

    disappointed with the economy, the failedpromise of comprehensive immigrationreform, or the continuation of the war inAfghanistan, young voters are now lessenthusiastic about t he Democratic part y.

    (read: decline) in Democratic supportwill remain immeasurable until the nextpresidential election, but most people agree

    As one who wants to see the Republ icanParty win in 2012, Im trying to not look thisgift-horse in the mouth. But the strategy of let the Democrats mess up whi le in powerand then reclaim the disgrunt led youngcentrists is hardly a sustainable modelfor Republicans. Instead, Republicans

    need to convince young voters that theRepublican Party is not just an alternativeparty, but a party that is meritorious init s own right. And how this can be done?

    1) Dispel the myth that young voters aremonolithically Democratic and alwayshave been. Many people toss away theyoung vote as a foregone conclusion.Young people will always vote Democrat.Just let them age a bit. But this simplyisnt true. In 1984, more young Americans

    voted for President Reagan than forDemocratic rival Walter Mondale (59-

    W. Bush and Michael Dukakis in 1988(53-47%). And even as recently as 2000,the under 30 vote split evenly betweenGeorge W. Bush and Al Gore (47-47%).

    By shattering the myth that Democrats ownthe youth vote, young voters are releasedfrom the feeling that they must voteDemocrat, and Republicans are encouragedto make a stronger play for the young vote.

    2) Convince young Americans theyre

    In the midterm elections of 2006 and

    the presidential election of 2008, theRepublican Party lost a combined 52House seats and 14 Senate seats. Theyalso gave away the White House in anhistoric election that saw states suchsafely red states as Virginia, NorthCarolina and Indiana, go blue. Itappeared to many particularly thosewho pride themselves as D.C. insidersand talking heads that the end ofthe Republican Party was near. Howwrong.

    In May of 2009, TIME Magazinenaively (but not surprisingly) putthe GOP elephant on its cover witha headline that read EndangeredSpecies? The lead article, by MichaelGrunwald, asked, Are the Republicansextinct? He came to this question byasserting that the Republican Partyhad become too radical, citing ArlenSpecters abandonment of the GOPfor the Democrats as an example thatperhaps the Republican Party wasmoving too far to the right. Shortly before this TIME article appeared,Republican governor and one timeshoo-in Senatorial candidate CharlieCrist of Florida, left the party to runas an independent. Both Specter andCrist were hailed as leaders who sawhow crazy the GOP had come, and theneed to leave the party was a step inthe right direction. In the midst ofsuch high profile defections, a generalconsensus began to take shape thatthe Republicans were experiencing

    so much internal strife that the

    Democrats would control the policyprocess for years to come. LongtimeDemocratic madman James Carvilleeven wrote a book entitled, 40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rulethe Next Generation. How brilliant.

    That brings us to Election Day,November 2nd, 2010. On this oneday the Republican Party picked upmore than 60 seats in the U.S. Houseof Representatives, seven seats in theU.S. Senate, and took control of at

    The answer is in plain sight. PresideObama and his far-left allies Congress completely misread tmandate that they thought was befo

The victors of 2008 conjurup some very unpopular bills and wsome success, jammed them down t American throats of the Ameripeople. THE YAF SCE

    As Young Americans for Freedom in the

    given freedom?Is it simply a belief thatour forefathers embraced in order to craftour founding documents, thereby only of

    age?Or is freedom what we, as the nextgeneration of American leadership, believeto be the best means by which to thrive

    as a truly blessed and unique society?For many of us, that answer is clear andconcise. H owever, there are those in ourgeneration who would subject us to thebeliefs of Communism- people like AnitaDunn, who declares that t yrannicaldictators such as Chairman M ao TseTung are inspirational. We in YAF do notadhere to that guiding policy.

    Who do we look to for our inspiration?Is it poli tical leaders such as the foundingfathers?Political leaders such as PresidentCalvin Coolidge, Senator Robert Taft,Senator Barry Goldwater, or PresidentRonald Reagan? Is it the economistsand political ideologues such as AdamSmith, John Locke, Frederick Hayek,Leo Strauss, William F. Buckley Jr. andRussell Ki rk? If it is a culmination ofthese two groups, then how do we reactwhen our conservative and libertarianheroes venture into uncertain territories?What do we do when one of ourchampions embraces an ideology which

    would suggest an increase in the size andscope of federal government as opposedto a decrease.

    My answer would be the very same asSenator Goldwaters in 1960. It would

    As the National Chairman of YoungAmericans for Freedom, I seek tomaximize freedom. I f we are to be ofany true relevance in this age, we mustcontinue stating this claim, for themaximizing of freedom is essential to theprosperity of any nation. Any person whoreads a survey of American history willnote that those who led with the intent ofminimizing government and maximizingfreedom proved to be among the most

    serve in this capacity not as one whodictates, but rather as one who presides

    Our dutifully imprudent policy

    further into the U.S. camp andsideline Hizballah, tried to prop upthe Lebanese Army (LA). Ignore thefact that the last time the U.S. wantedto use to the LA for its own interests(1983-1984), it split with half joiningthe pro-Syrian Amal Movement and

    the other half joining Christian forcesin East Beirut. In 1989 P.J. ORourke

    political stability in the region.

    After the end of the 1975-1990Lebanese Civil War and Syrias completecontrol over Lebanon, the army was

    to Syrian interests. Not much has beendone to change the Syrian-implantedethos.

    Equally amusing is the talk aboutintegrating pro-Iranian/pro-Syriangroups into the LA. After the Civil War,some four thousand Amal militiamenwere integrated into the LA. I wonder

    really lays?Is it even remotely realisticthat a Hizballah member, who believesthat Jews (especially their nation, Israel)must be destroyed, and who holdsallegiance to Iranian Supreme LeaderAyatollah Khamenei, could be, almostby magic, transformed into a peaceable

    member of a pluralistic civic society byhaving him join the LA? When halal

    With this plan in place, our policymisers somehow thought that sansintegration, Hizballah might bemilitarily mitigated by the LA. Eventhough policy makers would have abetter chance of catching a unicornby throwing pennies into a fountainat 11:11 every night, this strategywas continued in earnest. H istorically

    As Americans, we try hard to succeed,but that doesnt mean we shouldcontinue driving a square peg into around hole. Unfortunately, the Obamaadministration, which sees NASAas a tool for outreach for the Islamic

    community, is still seeing a lot ofhope for change in that peg.

    To add insult to injury, if Obamacouldnt have been more naive goingin, he has wonderful intellectualslike his lead terrorism advisor, JohnBrennan advising him on how tofurther dig himself into a pit. Brennanwas intelligent enough, to t ry to buildup the more moderate elements insideHizballah. Lets disregard the fact thatHizballah views the destruction of Jews(especially Israel) as religious duty. Its

    possible that Brennan may have missedrallies that included denunciations ofal Shaytan al Akbar (the Great Satan)A.K.A. the U.S. together with theritualistic chants of mouwt li Amrika(death to America). Maybe Hizballahsdirect links to Tehran and their hopeto impose wilayat al faqih (the samegovernmental system found in Iran)makes them appealing?It may be evenmore likely that Johnny may havemissed that whole minor occurrencewhen Hizballah and their I ranian

    backers blew up 241 American Marinepeacekeepers in 1983, the U.S. embassy

    We are living in the age ofrelativi sm, the logicalend of Enlightenment

    there are objective virtues has been thrownaside, and the only virtue that remains is

    tolerance. Our modern society has becomeone of inclusion, where all is permittedexcept for those who think that there arecertain things that should not be permi tted.Such a society is divorced from truth, asit is incapable of asking itself one simplequestion: What if truth itself is exclusive?

    Tolerance is part of the Wests pluralisttradition and is the fulcrum of republicandemocracy. Unless all major parties respect

    rule by the people cannot be maintained. Atyranny of the majority threatens to form,depriving those who do not exist within thesocial norm of their rights. For a free societyto function, it must allow for the openexchange of opinions and ideas without thethreat of repercussions, thereby buildingthe basis for a democratic government.

    Tolerance is therefore of instrumental use;it s worth comes from its ability to serve as aframework for the only sort of governmentyet known to respect our natural rights.

    Our Founding Fathers each had an abiding

    belief that we had certain natural rightsthat existed prior to the creation of thestate; natural rights that we possessed fromnature and/or natures God. But since then,the left has progressively detached itselffrom natural law, embracing relativism

    and Humean (based on the writings ofScottish philosopher David Hume) ethics.When divorced from natural law, tolerancebecomes intri nsically valuable. Consensusbuilding and absolute tolerance become thevery foundations of society.

    Liberals have come to value tolerance for itsown sake. Rather t han being a means to themaintenance of a free and vibrant society,

    is an inherent dogmatism that exists at theheart of such a view. In contrast, right-wing political philosophies judge truth byremaining grounded in the moral orderderived from natural law.

    Within natural right philosophies, thereis constant, invigorating debate. However,liberalism, because it denies objectivemoral truths, has no grounding and isthus left to the mere philosophical whimsof man. Because theres no such thing asobjective morality, all beliefs are simplypreference-statements and are lit tered with

    Such a position has led to the clos

    n Whittaker Chamberss mostfamed work, Witness, he opens witha haunting letter to his children,recalling not only one of the darkest

    moments in his life, and possibly the historyof the United States, but also forewarningof the continued uncertainty of the survivalof Western Civilization. He writes:

    Much more than Alger H iss or Whit takerChambers was on trial in the trials of AlgerHiss. Two faiths were on trial. Humansocieties, like human beings, live by faithand die when faith dies. At issue in the HissCase was the question whether this sicksociety, which we call Western civilization,could in its extremity still cast up a man

    whose faith in it was so great that he wouldvoluntarily abandon those things whichmen hold good, including life, to defendit. At issue was the question whether thismans faith could prevail against a manwhose equal faith it was that this societyis sick beyond saving, and that mercyitself pleads for its swift extinction andreplacement by another.

    In Chamberss time, the free societies ofthe West were engaged in an apocalypticbattle with the forces of internationalcommunism, lead by what the late PresidentRonald Reagan termed the Evil Empire-the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.Now twenty-some years after the end of theCold War, we still may yet be at odds withold foes, specters of an enemy once thoughtrelegated to the ash bin of history.

    Today we face a creeping socialism fragmented ideas of long dead radicals

    In the 1920s and 1930s, the era Chambersaddressed in the beginning of Wi tness,there was undoubtedly a strong and deeplyrooted communist conspiracy active in theUnited States. Many of the communistoperatives and sympathizers were youngheirs of WASP families, perhaps morebored with Western culture --due to theirown arrogance-- than truly convinced of
