Updated March 2014

In June 2013 the 83rd Texas legislature passed HB 5 which made sweeping changes to Texas graduation requirements. Humble ISD will be implementing new graduation plans for the 2014-2015 school year. 1Three New Graduation PlansFoundation High School Program (FHSP)Foundation High School Program with an EndorsementDistinguished Level of Achievement

Students in Cohorts 2015, 2016 and 2017 have the option of graduating on either the Recommended High School Plan, the Distinguished High School Plan, the Minimum High School Plan, or the FHSP+ Endorsements. -Cohorts 2018 and beyond must meet the requirements of one of the new plans. Our default plan is that all students will begin high school on the Distinguished Level of Achievement.2 Comparison of Graduation Plans Minimum High School PlanRecommended High School PlanDistinguished Achievement PlanFoundation High School Program (FHSP)FHSP+EndorsementFHSP+Distinguished Level of AchievementHow many total credits are required on this plan?222626222626What are the core credit requirements for this plan?English- 4.0Math- 3.0Science- 2.0Soc Studies- 4.0English- 4.0Math- 4.0Science- 4.0Soc Studies- 4.0English- 4.0Math- 4.0Science- 4.0Soc Studies- 4.0English- 4.0Math- 3.0Science- 3.0Soc Studies- 3.0English- 4.0Math- 4.0Science- 4.0Soc Studies- 3.0(+)English- 4.0Math- 4.0Science- 4.0Soc Studies- 3.0(+)What are the foreign language requirements?None2 levels of the same foreign language3 levels of the same foreign language2 levels of the same foreign language with some exceptions2 levels of the same foreign language with some exceptions2 levels of the same foreign language with some exceptionsWhat effect does this plan have on college admissions?May not be eligible to enter a university upon graduationEligible for admission to a TX universityMakes students more competitive for admission to a TX universityEligible for admission to a TX universityMakes students more competitive for admission to any university and programMakes students more competitive for admission to any university and programAre students eligible for the Top Ten Percent?NoYesYesNoNoYesAre students eligible for the Texas Grant?NoYesYesYesYesYesWhich students can choose this plan?Students who entered high school prior to 14-15Students who entered high school prior to 14-15Students who entered high school prior to 14-15Cohorts 2015, 2016, and beyondCohorts 2015, 2016, and beyondCohorts 2015, 2016, and beyondIs this plan flexible enough to meet my students unique needs?Offers very little flexibilityOffers very little flexibilityOffers very little flexibilityOffers very little flexibilityOffers a number of plans that are designed to match each students interestsOffers a number of plans that are designed to match each students interests but requires all students to complete Alg 2Are there any extra requirements for this plan?NoNoYes, 4 Advanced MeasuresNo, but students are eligible for performance acknowledgementsNo, but students are eligible for performance acknowledgementsNo, but students are eligible for performance acknowledgementsDoes this plan affect the look of the diploma? All students diplomas look the same regardless of the planAll students diplomas look the same regardless of the planAll students diplomas look the same regardless of the planStudents diplomas will designate the endorsement and performance acknowledgementsStudents diplomas will designate the endorsement and performance acknowledgementsStudents diplomas will designate the endorsement and performance acknowledgementsIs there anything else I need to know?Must meet certain requirements to choose this plan with parent permissionMay choose after 10th grade ONLY with parent permission5 endorsement options: STEMBusiness and IndustryPublic ServiceArts and HumanitiesMulti-disciplinaryMust earn endorsementThis chart compares various aspects of the old and new graduation plans. It was designed for counselors to use when working with students in cohorts 2015, 2016, and 2017 to help students and parents choose a graduation plan.3EndorsementsA student entering Grade 9 in the 2014-2015 school year and thereafter shall enroll in the courses necessary to complete the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program specified in Section 74.12 of this title and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement specified in Section 74.13 of this title (relating to Endorsements).

Text of New 19 TACHumble ISD will provide students the opportunity to choose any of the 5 endorsements listed in House Bill 5.4So, whats an endorsement? An endorsement is a broad area of studyIts a bit like a college major

Why are students being pushed to choose a career pathway?Students with career goals are 16% more likely to graduate from high school.Students who participate in CTE courses are 30% more likely to complete high school.Students with well-defined career goals are more likely to persist in college.Students with well-defined career goals are more likely to attain jobs in their chosen career field after college.

Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA)A student may earn a distinguished level of achievement by successfully completing the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement required by the Texas Education code (TEC)including four credits in science and four credits in mathematics to include Algebra II. Text of New 19 TAC

Beginning with cohort 2018, students who wish to be eligible for the Texas Top 10% automatic admissions law must achieve the Distinguished Level of Achievement. The Distinguished Level of Achievement is the default plan for all Humble ISD students. Of course, as circumstances arise, we understand that not all students will be able to achieve this goal. At that time, the counselor should work with the student and his or her family to alter the students graduation plan to meet his or her individual circumstances. We would like for all students to graduate with at least one endorsement, but we also anticipate that some students will need to graduate on the FHSP without an endorsement. This circumstance should be fairly rare and should be handled on a case by case basis.7English Graduation RequirementsFour credits are required:

English I (EOC)English II (EOC)English III Additional English

Recommendations:Choose a challenging level of rigor that prepares you for your career goals. The 4th English should be a bridge between high school and post-secondary goals.8Math Graduation Requirements4 credits are required:Two of the credits must consist of Algebra I (EOC) and Geometry (Algebra I is a prerequisite for Geometry)The additional 2 credits may be selected from a number of math courses offered in Arp ISDRecommendations:Choose challenging math courses that will prepare you for your career goals. The 4th math course should be a bridge between high school and post-secondary goals.

Notice that the third and fourth math credits can be a combination of two half credit courses. Also, Math Models must be taken prior to September of 2015.9Science Graduation RequirementsFour credits are required:One credit must consist of Biology (EOC)One credit must be selected from the following laboratory-based courses:

IPCChemistryPhysics

The other 2 credits may be chosen from a number of science and CTE courses

12Notes on Endorsements A student shall specify in writing an endorsement the student intends to earn upon entering Grade 9.

A district shall permit a student to enroll in courses under more than one endorsement before the students junior year and to choose, at any time, to earn an endorsement other than the endorsement the student previously indicated.

A student must earn at least 26 credits to earn an endorsement.

An endorsement shows colleges and employers that the student is prepared to succeed at the postsecondary level and has a clear vision of what he or she wants to accomplish in school and in life!A guiding principle in creating a coherent sequence of courses for students in Humble ISD has been that every student will be able to earn an endorsement EVEN if that student does not have the opportunity to take a course such as Culinary Arts for which a limited number of seats are available and even if the student is not able to take advantage of a practicum course.13Areas of EndorsementsSTEM

Arts & Humanities

Multidisciplinary StudiesScience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) EndorsementStudents pursuing a STEM Endorsement must take Algebra II as their third math course and they must choose Chemistry and Physics as 2 of their science courses.

Arp ISD offers 3 options for earning a STEM Endorsement:Students can take a coherent sequence of course in the STEM cluster for 4 credits. In addition to the 4 math courses already required, students can take an additional math course. In addition to the 4 science courses already required, students can take an additional science course.

This chart illustrates the requirements for completing the STEM endorsement. The red line indicates the cumulative number of credits required in each area. There are three options in Humble ISD for earning a STEM endorsement. The first option is through a coherent sequence of courses for 4 or more credits in the STME or engineering cluster. The second and third options require students to earn 5 credits in either math or science courses. Students who earn a STEM endorsement will have met the requirements for the DLA without any additional course requirements and will be eligible for the Top 10%.15Business & Industry EndorsementStudents can write their own ticket to success in the Business and Industry Endorsement. Nearly half of all jobs are in managerial and professional occupations, and nearly one-fourth of all workers are self-employed.

This chart illustrates the requirements for completing the Business and Industry endorsement. Humble ISD anticipates that the B&I endorsement will have the largest number of students because there are a multitude of possibilities for students in this area. Because of the flexibility of the B&I endorsement with its many areas of interests, students in Humble ISD will be able to start in one cluster of this endorsement and then switch to another cluster as their needs and circumstances change. This flexibility will be explained in more detail later in this presentation.16What is a coherent sequence of courses for the B&I Agriculture Mechanics cluster?Students may earn a Business & Industry endorsement in the Architecture Mechanics cluster by successfully completing 4 or more credits. Notice that the flexibility of the Business cluster within the B&I endorsement is one pathway that will be allow students who may start in one cluster to switch to the Business cluster as their needs and circumstances change. The counselors role is to first make sure that students know that their plans are flexible and that changes are part of the career exploration process and therefore quite possible. And second, counselors should help students alter their 4 year plans in Bridges to reflect their new interests and/or circumstances.20Suggested Grade LevelCourseCredit(s)9Principles of Hospitality & Tourism110Hotel Management.5Travel & Tourism.511Business Information I112Business Information Systems II1Students may earn a Business & Industry endorsement in the Hospitality and Tourism cluster by successfully completing 4 or more credits. In addition, students with this endorsement may be serving as translators, ambassadors, teachers, and historians.

Arp ISD offers 2 different pathways for students interested in an Arts and Humanities Endorsement.
