Youth Group Prayer

Almighty God, who, through your Son, sanctified the age of adolescence and young adulthood; look with favour on the youth of your world and more especially, in this parish and those who are banded together in this youth group; deepen, we pray, within us a sense of purpose in life, inspire us with the spirit of service and compassion, and unite us in loyalty to one another and to you; through the same, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Primary School Children

Heavenly Father, as we begin a new year, help us really to do our best. Help us to be kind and generous to our friends, patient and friendly with those who differ from us. May we listen carefully to our teachers, and do as they ask without arguing, not to talk when they are talking, but to listen attentively. May we say our prayers well and really mean them. Secondary School Children

Once more, dear Lord, we take up our academic endeavours. We ask your blessings on this new term; may we work diligently, understand thoroughly, and grow in stature and grace in your sight, and that of our neighbours. Holy Spirit, fill us with your wisdom and power. Teach us the right use of knowledge and growing strength; help us to keep things in proportion and to see that gaining heaven is the final purpose of all we do here, and so that everything we shall do this term is relative to that great goal. THE COLLECT - Proper 18 (Page 178 BCP) Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the Old Testament lessons Moses presents the

people with their choice: love and obey the Lord and find life, or turn away to other

gods and know death.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Janice Hassig 9:15a.m. - Anthony Griffith

FIRST LESSON: (Old Testament): FIRST LESSON: (Old Testament): FIRST LESSON: (Old Testament): FIRST LESSON: (Old Testament): Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Moses said to all Israel the words which the Lord commanded him: "See, I have set before you this day life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you this day, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his ordi-nances, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you this day, that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land which you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice, and cleaving to him; for that means life to you and length of days, that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."

REFLECTION THE PSALM: The Lord makes fruitful the lives of those who choose

the way of righteousness.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 1 (7:30a.m. - page 471 BCP)

1. BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners : and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. 2. But his delight is in the law of the Lord : and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. 3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side : that will bring forth his fruit in due season. 4. His leaf also shall not wither : and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.

BLESSING RECESSIONAL HYMN - 269 MP

I do not know what lies ahead, The way I cannot see; Yet one stands near to be my guide, He’ll show the way to me

I know who holds the future,

And he’ll guide me with His hand;

With God things don’t just happen,

Everything by Him is planned.

So as I face tomorrow,

With its problems large and small,

I’ll trust the God of miracles,

Give to Him my all.

I do not know how many days Of life are mine to spend; But one who knows and cares for me Will keep me to the end: I know who holds…………

I do not know the course ahead, What joys and griefs are there; But one is near who fully knows, I’ll trust His loving care: I know who holds…………

Prayers for Back to School

Leader: Let us pray.

All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Leader: As a new school year begins, we listen to what Jesus our good teacher taught his disciples.

Reading: Matthew 5:14-16

“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead he puts it on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.”

Leader: Lord we gather with a common heritage, our faith. We gather with a common purpose, to teach that faith.

All: Help us Jesus, to bring your light to our children.

Children: Help us to receive the light and share it with others.

Leader: Receive the light of Christ, and let it shine in your lives; as promised at your Baptism.

All: Thanks be to God.

Leader: We pray for all students, teachers, parents and those who administer education in our country.

All: That we may enjoy the fruits of God’s creation.

Leader: We pray for those children returning to school, and for those starting out on this important journey.

All: Let your light so shine in our lives.

Holy Spirit, make us wise, Holy Spirit, make us holy, Holy Spirit, help us to understand, Holy Spirit, help us to grow in grace.

O God, teach us goodness, O God, teach us to love your Son, O God, teach us the way to heaven. Amen.

5. As for the ungodly, it is not so with them : but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth. 6. Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgement : neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 7. But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous : and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: This reading contains most of the letter which Paul

sent to Philemon asking that he receive back in love the runaway slave Onesimus who

was voluntarily returning to him.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Joan Hinds 9:15a.m. - Rashena Ward

SECOND LESSON (Epistle): SECOND LESSON (Epistle): SECOND LESSON (Epistle): SECOND LESSON (Epistle): Philemon 1-20 Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may promote the knowledge of all the good that is ours in Christ. For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you -- I, Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus -- I appeal to you for my child, Ones'imus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment. (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own free will. Perhaps this is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back for ever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me. If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, write this with my own hand, I will repay it -- to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

GRADUAL HYMN - 424

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In our Gospel Jesus speaks of the necessity of counting

the full cost of discipleship. To follow Jesus in the way of the cross means to surrender

the whole of one’s life. Any relationship which interferes with this primary commitment

must be hated. Jesus tells the crowds two stories to make them consider carefully whether

they are ready and able to follow him completely.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 14:25-33 Great multitudes accompanied Jesus; and he turned and said to them, "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to

HYMN - 576 A&M

Lord, behold us with Thy blessing, Once again assembled here; Onward be our footsteps pressing, In Thy love and faith and fear; Still protect us, By Thy presence ever near.

For Thy mercy we adore Thee, For this rest upon our way; Lord, again we bow before Thee, Speed our labors day by day; Mind and spirit, With thy choicest gifts array.

Keep the spell of home affection Still alive in every heart; May its power, with mild direction, Draw our love from self apart, Till thy children, Feel that Thou their Father art.

Break temptation's fatal power, Shielding all with guardian care, Safe in every careless hour, Safe from sloth and sensual snare; Thou, our Savior, Still our failing strength repair.

mock him, saying, `This man began to build, and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace. So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Bidding Prayer

For perseverance in faith and service, let us pray to the Lord.

Bless the Church with resolve to hold nothing back from the duty to which she has been called…Fill her ministers with zeal for the gospel and strengthen them to follow where their Master has led.

We pray for the world where many strive for mastery and put their trust in the outward signs of power and wealth…Lead the rulers of nations into the way of peace to seek set-tlement before confrontation.

Bless our families, friends and neighbours with wisdom and discernment in all their deci-sions…As we give thanks for the human love that we have been given, we pray that it shall never cause us to neglect our love and duty to God.

Have mercy on all who have been ruined by their own folly and wrong judgement…Relieve their need and restore them to the good life which they have lost…Forgive those who have been false to the faith they once professed, and bring them back into the right way.

We pray for the departed who have sought to follow the way of Christ through this world and endured to the end…Receive them into the peace where all perils are past and all bur-dens are laid down.

We pray in the name of Christ who calls us to follow him as his disciples. Amen.
