THE COLLECTS - Proper 29 (Page 181 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

Independence

O God our Father, whose will it is that your people should live in ordered societies; inspire the people of this nation with the spirit of justice, truth and love; and so guide our leaders, and all who make decisions on our behalf, that they may direct our affairs in righteousness and peace; that we may live in peace and harmony and to your honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our opening lesson the Lord denounces the rulers

who have so poorly shepherded the people Israel. God will gather the flock together and

give them new shepherds, especially a just ruler in the line of David.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Margo Clarke 9:15a.m. - Michael Hoyte

FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Jeremiah 23:1-6

"Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, says the LORD. "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: `The LORD is our righteousness.'

REFLECTION THE PSALM: The earth may be moved and kingdoms shaken, but God

is our refuge. God is exalted among the nations of the earth.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 46 (7:30a.m. - page 527 BCP)

3. Though the waters thereof rage and swell : and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same. 4. The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God : the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. 5. God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed : God shall help her, and that right early. 6. The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved : but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away. 7. The Lord of hosts is with us : the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8. O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord : what destruction he hath brought upon the earth. 9. He maketh wars to cease in all the world : he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire. 10. Be still then, and know that I am God : I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth. 11. The Lord of hosts is with us : the God of Jacob is our refuge.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul prays that the Colossians may

be strengthened to meet whatever is to come, and he praises the Son as the visible like-

ness of the invisible God through whom all things were created. He is the head of his

body, the church, and the source of its life.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Sandra Waterman 9:15a.m. - Mother’s Union

SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): Colossians 1:11-20

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities -- all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in everything he might be pre-eminent. For in him all the fulness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

GRADUAL HYMN - 193

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel Jesus, as he hangs upon the cross, is

mocked as the Christ and the King of the Jews. To a thief crucified with him he

promises Paradise. The story forces us also to ask, “What kind of ruler is this? What

royal power does he have? What sort of God would allow God’s chosen one to die like

this?” Clearly the strength of God revealed in Christ is very different from human under-

standing of kingship. Jesus’ words to the thief are words of hope to all who die in every

manner of circumstance.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 23:35-43

The people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the

Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." And he said to him, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Bidding Prayer

In penitence and faith, let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Grant that the Church shall be worthy of the sufferings of her Lord, shall honour him in worship and serve him humbly in his people...Give her ministers grace to declare the forgivness of sins to all who are penitent and to comfort those who are in despair.

Bless all who are in authority, that they shall rule with mercy and with respect for those who are under them...We pray for soldiers, and for all who must carry out the works of judgement.

Be with us, with our families, friends and neighbours at this time...As we come near to celebrate the birth of our Lord, help us to remember his suffering for our sake and to sorrow for our sins even as we rejoice in his glory.

We pray for all who suffer from the cruelty of power...Lead back into joy those who seek pardon for their sins...Give peace and comfort to those who are near to death.

Receive the souls of those who have died in faith, and look with compassion on those who have died without repentance...May the everlasting mercy open the gates of Paradise when we have passed from this world.

We pray in the name of Christ, the King who reigns from the Cross. Amen.
