THE COLLECT - 5th Sunday of Easter (Page 170 BCP) Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your

Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His

steps in the way that leads to eternal life: through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who

lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen. REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: This lesson recalls Paul’s missionary work and

adventures as he tells the good news of the gospel in the lands we know today as

Greece.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Leonie Gilkes 9:15a.m. - Sherryl Bishop

FIRSTFIRSTFIRSTFIRST LESSON: LESSON: LESSON: LESSON: Acts 17:1-15

Now when Paul and Silas had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to

Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And Paul went in, as was his

custom, and for three weeks he argued with them from the scriptures, explaining and

proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying,

"This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ." And some of them were persuaded,

and joined Paul and Silas; as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the

leading women. But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked fellows of the rabble,

they gathered a crowd, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking

to bring them out to the people. And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason

and some of the brethren before the city authorities, crying, "These men who have turned

the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them; and they are

all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." And the

people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard this. And when they had

taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. The brethren immediately sent

Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea; and when they arrived they went into the Jewish

synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they

received the word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things

were so. Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing

as well as men. But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God was

proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there too, stirring up and inciting the

crowds. Then the brethren immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and

Timothy remained there. Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and

receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they

departed.

majesty and delivers the Lord’s people.

PSALM:PSALM:PSALM:PSALM: 66:1-11 (7:30a.m. - Page 548 BCP)

1. O BE joyful in God, all ye lands : sing praises unto the honour of his Name, make his

praise to be glorious.

2. Say unto God, O how wonderful art thou in thy works : through the greatness of thy

power shall thine enemies be found liars unto thee.

3. For all the world shall worship thee : sing of thee, and praise thy Name.

4. O come hither, and behold the works of God : how wonderful he is in his doing toward

the children of men.

5. He turned the sea into dry land : so that they went through the water on foot; there did

we rejoice thereof.

6. He ruleth with his power for ever; his eyes behold the people : and such as will not

believe shall not be able to exalt themselves.

7. O praise our God, ye people : and make the voice of his praise to be heard;

8. Who holdeth our soul in life : and suffereth not our feet to slip.

9. For thou, O God, hast proved us : thou also hast tried us, like as silver is tried.

10. Thou broughtest us into the snare : and laidest trouble upon our loins.

11. Thou sufferedst men to ride over our heads : we went through fire and water, and thou

broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: The New Testament reading presents a series of

images from the Old Testament, describing Christians as a chosen people called to

God’s service.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Suzanne Belle 9:15a.m. - Church Army

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 2:1-10

Put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander. Like newborn

babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you

have tasted the kindness of the Lord. Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men

but in God's sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a

spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God

through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a

cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame."

To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very

stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner," and "A stone that

will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall"; for they stumble because they

disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priest-

hood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him

who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were no people but

now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received

mercy.

GRADUAL HYMN - 188

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel passage Jesus speaks with his disciples

shortly before his passion and tells them that he is the way, the truth and the life. He is

the way because he himself is going the way of the sacrifice of his death, so to prepare a

place for his disciples. In this way followers will discover the truth that Jesus so

intimately reflects the character of God that those who have seen him have seen the

Father. All who come to the Father through Jesus will find true life.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 14:1-14

Jesus said, "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my

Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to

prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again

and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way

where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going;

how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life;

no one comes to the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you would have known my

Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord,

show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you

so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father;

how can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the

Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the

Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the

Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves. "Truly, truly, I say

to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than

these will he do, because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it,

that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.

THE SERMON

THE NICENE CREED - Page 104

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray in faith to God for the Church and for the world.

Grant that the Church may always follow in the way of Christ, proclaim his truth and live

his risen life…Keep Christian people in knowledge and service of the Father, that his will

may be done on earth as it is in heaven.

As the disciples were led to understand and taught to seek God in prayer, so may those

who are counted wise in the world learn where true wisdom is to be found…Teach those

in position of authority to know that all earthly power is given from above.

When our hearts are troubled, bless us with faith to offer strength and assurance in our

homes and in our work…Bless those in this community who help by teaching or example

to bring people to know God and to walk in his ways.

Hear the prayers of those who cry out for relief in their afflictions, in sickness, in poverty,

loneliness, uncertainty…Grant them the assurance that Christ, who has gone before them

through suffering to glory, is near to them and will bring them home.

We pray for the departed who have come to the place which Christ has prepared for them,

where they shall be with him for ever…We pray that we may so follow him in this world

that we too shall be gathered into the Father’s house.

We pray in the name of Christ the Way, the Truth and the Life. Amen.

1. I wish to thank those persons who contributed to the service on Mothers’ Day in

speaking about their mothers. These personal tributes and testimonies were well received

and very moving for all who were at the services. We appreciated their thoughts, which

made us think of our own relationships with our mothers. It is suggested that we do a

similar thing for Fathers’ Day next month.

2. The company working on the decoration of the interior of the Church Tower in order

495 Mission Praise

O for a heart to praise my God,

A heart from sin set free,

A heart that always feels Thy blood

So freely shed for me.

A heart resigned, submissive, meek,

My great Redeemer’s throne,

Where only Christ is heard to speak,

Where Jesus reigns alone.

A humble, lowly, contrite, heart,

Believing, true and clean,

Which neither life nor death can part

From Him that dwells within.

A heart in every thought renewed

And full of love divine,

Perfect and right and pure and good,

A copy, Lord, of Thine.

Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;

Come quickly from above;

Write Thy new name upon my heart,

Thy new, best name of Love.

Smile: The Sunday school teacher was carefully explaining the story of Elijah the

Prophet and the false prophets of Baal. She explained how Elijah built the altar, put wood

upon it, cut the steer in pieces and laid it upon the altar. And then Elijah commanded the

people of God to fill four barrels of water and pour it over the altar. He had them do this

four times. "Now, said the teacher, "can anyone in the class tell me why the Lord would

have Elijah pour water over the steer on the altar?" A little girl in the back of the room

raised her hand with great enthusiasm. "To make the gravy."

KNOW YOUR CHURCH

PRACTICES AND CUSTOMS

Anglican worship makes use of maternal things and the senses in its praise of God. The

various actions in our worship enable our bodies to join with our spirit in the total

worship of God. The whoJe body participates as we meet to worship God in Spirit and in

truth.

The Sign of the Cross: We make the sign of the cross, by putting the right hand to the

forehead, then to the breast, and then to the left and right shoulders respectively, saying

quietly, “In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Amen.

To make the sign of the cross says we are Christians. The cross is the Universal sign of

Christianity. We make the sign of the cross at the beginning of our prayers and the Mass,

to fix our mind on Jesus. At the reading of the Gospel three small crosses are made on the

forehead, lips and breast to remind us that we are to use our minds, mouths and wills in

the reception of the Gospel of Christ and make it a part of our total lives. At the end of

the Creed we make the sign of the cross to remind us that we share in the resurrected life

of Christ. At the words of institution. “This is my body, this is my blood” we make the

sign of the cross as an act of devotion, a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice for salvation of the

world. The sign of the cross is made at the absolution (after the confession) to reassure us

of Gods forgiveness; before and after receiving Holy Communion; and at the end of

Mass, invoking God’s blessing on our lives. Wherever the sign of the cross is made it

reminds us of our baptism into the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Holy Water: On entering and leaving the Church we dip our hands in the holy-water

stoup and make the sign of the cross. This act calls to mind our baptism and commitment

to the Christian faith. Holy water is used in blessing objects, things and persons; an act of

sanctification and protection from the power of evil.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER - Page 147-148

Dedication Prayer Lord, be with us this day and throughout the week; Within us to purify us; Above us to

draw us up; Before us to lead us; Behind us to restrain us; Around us to protect us.

Amen.
