REFLECTION FIRST LESSON:

In our first reading Elijah restores to life the son of the widow of Zarephath.

1st LESSON: 7:30 - Sonji Philips 9:15 - Youth

FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): 1 Kings 17:17-24

The son of the widow of Zarephath, the mistress of the house, became ill; and his illness

was so severe that there was no breath left in him. And she said to Elijah, "What have you

against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to

cause the death of my son!" And he said to her, "Give me your son." And he took him

from her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber, where he lodged, and laid

him upon his own bed. And he cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, hast thou brought

calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?" Then he

stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God,

let this child's soul come into him again." And the LORD hearkened to the voice of

Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Elijah took the

child, and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and delivered him to

his mother; and Elijah said, "See, your son lives." And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I

know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth."

REFLECTION: THE PSALM

A hymn of praise and thanksgiving by one whom the Lord has saved from death.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 30 (7:30a.m. - page 502)

1. I WILL magnify thee, O Lord, for thou hast set me up : and not made my foes to

triumph over me.

2. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee : and thou hast healed me.

3. Thou, Lord, hast brought my soul out of hell : thou hast kept my life from them that go

down to the pit.

4. Sing praises unto the Lord, O ye saints of his : and give thanks unto him for a

remembrance of his holiness.

5. For his wrath endureth but the twinkling of an eye, and in his pleasure is life :

heaviness may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

6. And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be removed : thou, Lord, of thy goodness hast

Youth Prayer

Almighty God, who, through your Son, sanctified the age of adolescence and young

adulthood; look with favour on the youth of your world and more especially, in this parish

and those who are banded together in this youth group; deepen, we pray, within us, a

sense of purpose in life, inspire us with the spirit of service and compassion, and unite us

in loyalty to one another and to you; through the same, your Son, Jesus Christ, our

Lord. Amen

Letter from the Rector

Dear Members,

Offering Envelopes for 2014

The Church Council has made a decision to use only monthly envelopes from next year.

This means that we are discontinuing the weekly envelopes. A number of reasons have

resulted in this decision:-

1. The cost of the envelopes.

2. The cost of bulk postage from the USA.

3. The monthly envelopes will be cheaper to produce and to post.

4. The wastage of these envelopes, with many of them left unused every year.

5. Persons in many cases have been using one for the month, and leaving the others empty

and attached to the one which carries the money.

It is hoped that we all would be able to make a calculation of the exact monthly figure.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON:

In this lesson Paul reminds the Galatians that the gospel he preached to them did not

come through human authority but was revealed to him by Jesus.

2nd LESSON: 7:30 - Judith Yearwood 9:15 - Youth

SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): Galatians 1:11-24

I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's

gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a

revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I

persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism

beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the

traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had

called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might

preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to

Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I

returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and

remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the

Lord's brother. (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) Then I went into

the regions of Syria and Cilicia. And I was still not known by sight to the churches of

Christ in Judea; they only heard it said, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the

faith he once tried to destroy." And they glorified God because of me.

GRADUAL HYMN - 314

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL:

Our Gospel is the story of Jesus’ raising to life of the son of the widow of Nain. This

narrative would have been told in the early church to emphasize the new authority over

death which had been shown forth in Jesus’ own resurrection. It also represents a

fulfilment of Old Testament stories and prophecies and is a sign of the beginning of the

new age to which the people respond with awe by glorifying God. A special feature of the

account is the description of Jesus’ compassion.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 7:11-17

Soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went

with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being

carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the

city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her,

"Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he

said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And

he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray to God for the needs of the Church and the world.

Guide and strengthen the Church to live the new life of the gospel…Give grace to her

ministers to serve in love and humility, and faithfully to preach the word of God.

Hear our prayers for the people of the world in the trials and sorrows of their daily lives…

Heal the divisions which tear nations and races asunder…Grant that wisdom and

compassion shall guide all who are in authority.

We pray for our families, friends and neighbours…Protect them from harm, guide them in

temptations and comfort them in trouble…We pray for the wellbeing of all who live and

work in this community.

Have mercy on all who mourn, the widows, the orphans, parents who have lost children…

Bless them with the healing touch of love and the hope of resurrection.

Receive into rest and peace the souls of those who have died to this world and risen to

new life…Keep us firm in faith, that we may be brought at last into the fellowship of the

redeemed.

We pray in the name of Christ, the power of resurrection to eternal life. Amen.
