Smile: Leo and Sam exited and locked the car in a hurry, forgetting to remove the key which was in the ignition. Realizing the mistake, Leo asked, "Why don't we get a coat hanger to open it." "No, that won't work" answered Sam. "People will think we're trying to break in." "Well," sighed Leo, "we'd better think of something fast. It's starting to rain, and the sun roof is open!"

GLUTTONY is inordinate desire for food or drink on account of the pleasure they give. Excessive eating and drinking are its chief manifestations; but drunkenness is its most common form.

AVARICE (covetousness) is an inordinate longing for worldly goods, with an immoderate desire to possess, keep and increase them. It leads to the service of Mammon instead of that of God. It may lead to lying, deceit, perjury, theft, treason, lack of charity and every form of injustice. The Bahamian word “GRABALICIOUS”, which means to want everything for oneself describes this attitude.

“The love of money grows as the money itself grows.” Juvenal.

SLOTH is sluggishness of soul which makes one shirk physical and mental labour in the fulfillment of duty and the practice of virtue. It may take the form either of lukewarm indifference to things or of disinclination for them, developing into positive aversion. Its result is spiritual and moral paralysis.

The above sins are also called CAPITAL because they are chief sins that engender other sins.

Scvcn Acts of Mcrcy

The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to aid others.

SPIRITUALLY BY: (1) Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting (2) Forgiving and bearing wrongs

CORPORALLY BY: (3) Feeding the hungry (4) Sheltering the homeless (5) Clothing the naked (6) Visiting the sick and the imprisioned (7) Burying the dead

THE COLLECT - 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany (Page 160 BCP) Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Saviour Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of His salvation that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of His marvellous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: Our Old Testament reading is a stern denunciation of

Israel for its failure to live up to its calling.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Olivia Brathwaithe 9:15a.m. - David Worrell

FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Amos 3:1-8

Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt: "You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. "Do two walk together, unless they have made an appointment? Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from his den, if he has taken nothing? Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth, when there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the ground, when it has taken nothing? Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does evil befall a city, unless the Lord has done it? Surely the Lord God does nothing, without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?"

REFLECTION THE PSALM: With marvellous wisdom God alone perceives the

heights and depths of life.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 139:1-17 (7:30a.m. - page 654 BCP)

1. O LORD, thou hast searched me out and known me : thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising, thou understandest my thoughts long before. 2. Thou art about my path, and about my bed : and spiest out all my ways. 3. For lo, there is not a word in my tongue : but thou, O Lord, knowest it altogether. 4. Thou hast fashioned me behind and before : and laid thine hand upon me. 5. Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me : I cannot attain unto it. 6. Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit : or whither shall I go then from thy presence? 7. If I climb up into heaven, thou art there : if I go down to hell, thou art there also. 8. If I take the wings of the morning : and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea; 9. Even there also shall thy hand lead me : and thy right hand shall hold me. 10. If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me : then shall my night be turned to day. 11. Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as the day : the darkness and light to thee are both alike.

TIIE SEVEN DEADLY SINS THE SEVEN OPPOSITE VIRTUES

(1) Pride (1) Humility (2) Anger (2) Patience — Long-tempered (3) Lust (3) Chastity (self control) (4) Envy (4) Brotherly Love — good will (5) Gluttony (5) Temperance (6) Avarice (6) Liberality (generosity) detachment (7) Sloth (7) Diligence — conscientiousness

Seven Deadly Or Capital Sins

(Seven That Pull Us Down)

PRIDE is inordinate self-esteem, with the desire to induce others to accept one’s exalted opinion of oneself.

(There is also a positive sense of pride in being satisfied in performing a job well, tidiness and observing just rules.) The danger of Pride lies in its turning one’s thoughts from God as the source of all we have and are, and in making one feel self-sufficient and independent, thus making repentance unlikely.

The basic sin for Adam and Eve was their pride which caused them to desire to be like God hence their rebellion. “You shall be like God “ Genesis 3:5

ANGER is craving for revenge. Abstractly considered it is not always a sin, for there is a “righteous anger” which is praiseworthy and the lack of which may be a sin, as when one is unmoved by evil acts.

“Be ye angry and sin not.” Ephesians 4:26

But even this becomes a sin when it leads a person to loose control of himself/herself and harbour feelings of hatred and enmity. This is particularly true when anger lacks a just cause.

LUST is a form of inordinate desire which may lead to adultery or fornication if the opportunity presents itself. It may be either internal, confined to thoughts and desires, or external of words or acts. “He who looks at a woman (or man) and lusts after her (or him) has already committed adultery (or fornication) in his mind.” Matthew 5:27

ENVY is grief or jealousy because of another’s goods or success. Envy seeks another’s hurt or loss rather than his/her good and is therefore opposed to charity (love). From it springs hatred, revenge, false charges and slander.

It destroys interior peace.

allow the earlier services to remain. Therefore on the 16 February there will be one ser-vice at 7:30a.m. here at St. Peter’s. There will be no Evening Service as suggested last week. Organizations are asked to think about transportation. There is the possibility of chartering a bus to take persons to the Service.

5. Confirmation is set for the Sunday February 23 at 8:30a.m.

6. We are having a broadcast on CBC Radio on Sunday 02 March. Services for that Sunday will be 7:30a.m. and 9:00a.m. This is to allow adequate use of the allotted time slot. CBC allows one hour from 9:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. We look forward to working with their team.

DVD’s of the Opening Service of Congress 2013 are available at $30.00. It is worth buying a copy and becomes a part of the history of our Church.

I am looking for persons to form an Altar Guild, with specific reference to looking after the linens and items used at the altar. In previous years persons were allocated a month to help with the washing of the linens. Many of these persons have died and the burden now falls on a few persons. If you are interested in this particular ministry, kindly give your name to the Rector.

We need to update our Parish data. To this end, new forms with additional information are available. We need your help in providing the information. The last parish list was done some ten years ago and you will be aware that many changes have taken place over those years. Many of the persons have died, and many other new ones have moved into the parish. Thanks to the Publication Committee for their effort.

The Readers and Ushers Guild are asking for persons to join this important ministry. Persons are asked to give their names to Mrs. Juliette Hall.

12. For my reins are thine : thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 13. I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvellous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well. 14. My bones are not hid from thee : though I be made secretly, and fashioned beneath in the earth. 15. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect : and in thy book were all my members written; 16. Which day by day were fashioned : when as yet there was none of them. 17. How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God : O how great is the sum of them!

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this lesson we hear that Paul is disturbed by

news of factions in the young Corinthian church.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Sheryl Griffith 9:15a.m. - Mothers’ Union

SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): 1 Corinthians 1:10-17

I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Steph'anas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

GRADUAL HYMN - 515

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: The Gospel is a summary of the early ministry of

Jesus: his preaching, the calling of disciples and his acts of healing. After the arrest of

John the Baptist, Jesus withdrew to Galilee, an area in which many Gentiles lived. The

evangelist perceives in this a fulfilment of prophecy and a foreshadowing of the church’s

mission to bring the light of the gospel to darkened lives. Two sets of brothers are called

to leave their nets and become fishers of people.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 4:12-23

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles -- the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray to God who has called us to his service.

Give to the Church a burning zeal to win souls for Christ…Empower the shared ministry of all believers, so that human love may serve the love of God and make it known…Let your people never be deaf when you call them to your work, whether it is great or little.

May the people who sit in darkness see the great light of God and know his presence among them…Bless all our work in this world, but help us to know that it is not the whole of life…Enrich the skills and talents of daily labour, opening them to new service for the Kingdom.

Be present with our families and all the families of this community…Increase our love for one another but save us from the clinging selfishness that will not share our security with those who have none…When we are called to be apart from one another, keep us confident that we are not separated from your protecting love.

Come close to those who have had to leave their homes and love ones…Comfort parents who are lonely when children have gone away…As the disciples were given the power of healing, bless all those who care for the sick in mind or body.

Receive into heavenly light those who have passed through the shadow of death…Healed of all their infirmity, may they rejoice with those who first heard the call of Jesus and walked with him in Galilee.

We pray in the name of Christ, the source of all strength to those who hear his call.

Amen.
