THE COLLECT - Second Sunday of Easter (Page 169 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls.

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel presents two appearances of the risen Lord

to his disciples. The first takes place on the very evening of the day of his resurrection.

The disciples are gathered in fear, but Jesus brings them peace, gives them their mission

and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. A week later, Thomas, who had been absent when

Jesus first appeared and who doubted his resurrection, now knows Jesus by his wounds

and worships him as his Lord and God. Future disciples will not have Jesus’ physical

presence, but they will be blessed in their belief.

On the Evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing."

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Bidding Prayer

In the power of the Spirit, let us pray for grace to do the works of faith.

Grant to the Church, the gathered people of the gospel, wisdom to know and power to proclaim the good news of the Resurrection…Make her ministers strong in the Holy Spirit to bring pardon and healing in the name of Christ.

We pray for a world where many wish to believe but are held back by doubt…Open the way to the freedom that is in Christ, that peace may prevail among the nations and in the hearts of all people.

Grant to us, our families, friends and neighbours, the grace of the Resurrection…Break through the closed doors of our fear and doubt and give us the faith that needs no sign but knowledge of divine love present among us.

Have mercy on all who suffer persecution for their faith, who must meet in secret and cannot worship openly…Give them strength in their need, give light to those who oppress them, so that all who trust in the Resurrection may be free to share their joy.

We pray for the departed who trusted their Lord in this world and now see him in the full-ness of his glory…May their sins be forgiven and may we who now follow in faith share with them the promised blessing.

We pray in the name of Christ, by whose wounds we are healed. Amen.

Harvest Thanksgiving is on Sunday the 1st June. This year the Harvest will be combined with the 40th Celebrationof the Nation Cultural Foundation (NCF). The NCF Service will be at 9:30a.m., and there will also be a flower show. The Harvest will run throughout the day, with musical presentation, the viewing of flowers and our own Harvest Programme. A Tea Garden and the sale of produce will accompany the activities.

THE PASCHAL CANDLE

The Paschal candle is a large, white candle used at liturgy in the Western Rites of Christianity. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Paschal season which is during Easter and then throughout the year on special occasions, such as baptism and funerals.

The word paschal is derived from the Hebrew word for Passover “Pesach” and relates to the Paschal Mystery of salvation. The Christian Church connected this word with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus which took place at the time of the Jewish Passover. “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the Feast” (1 Corinthians

5:7). The tall white candle in many ways signifies the Divine pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that lead the Israelites in their Exodus from slavery in Egypt

The flame of the Paschal candle symbolizes the Risen Christ as light of the world and his presence in the midst of his people. The Paschal candle is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle." It has five marks containing incense grains representing the five wounds of Jesus: The Alpha and Omega, Christ the beginning and the end and the year marked on the wax indicate that Christ is the Lord of all times.

For churches that celebrate the Easter Vigil the ceremonial lighting of the Paschal candle is one of the most solemn moments of the service. On Maundy Thursday of the same week the entire church is darkened by extinguishing all candles and lamps. This

Smile: The Junior Sunday School Teacher asked her eight eager 10-year-olds if they would give $1,000,000 to the missionaries. "YES!" they all screamed!! "Would you give $1,000?" Again they shouted "YES!" How about $100?" "Oh, YES we would!" they all agreed!! "Would you give just a dollar to the missionaries?" she asked. The boys exclaimed "YES!" just as before except for Johnnie. "Johnnie," the teacher said as she noticed the boy clutching his pocket, "why didn't you say 'YES' this time?" "Well," he stammered, "I HAVE a dollar."

represents the darkness of a world without God. At the opening of the Easter Vigil a "new fire" is lit and blessed. The Paschal candle is the first candle to be lit with a flame from this sacred fire, representing the light of Christ coming into the world. This represents the risen Christ, as a symbol of light (life) dispelling darkness (death). As it is lit, the minister may say words similar to: "The light of Christ, rising in Glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds."

The minister will trace the symbols (mentioned above) on the Paschal candle, saying words similar to: "Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega. all time belongs to Him and all the ages; to Him be glory and power through every age for ever. Amen."

The candle remains lit at all worship services throughout Easter Season (or in some traditions until Ascension Day, when it is extinguished just after the Gospel), during which time it is located in the Sanctuary close to the altar. After the Easter season, it is frequently placed near the baptismal font. The Paschal candle is also lit during baptisms to signify the Holy Spirit and fire that John the Baptist promised to those who were baptised in Christ.

Believe in Yourself

There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren’t the way you had hoped they would be.

That’s when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There are times when people disappoint you and let you down.

But those are the times when you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and opinions, to keep your life focused on believing in yourself.

There will be challenges to face and changes to make in your life, and it is up to you to accept them.

Constantly keep yourself headed in the right direction for you. It may not be easy at times, but in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are.

So when the days come that are filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities, remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be.

Because the challenges and changes will only help you to find the goals that you know are meant to come true for you.
