At NESE, students learn more than just language; they learn American culture as well. Our students succeed
rapidly because intensive English language training combined with complete cultural immersion has proven
to maximize language learning. At NESE, students attend intensive classes during the day and have the
opportunity to go home to an American amily homestay or a dormitory in the evening. All day, every day

Small ClassesOur average class size is 10 students. Small classes ensure lively discussions, requent student participation
and intensive student-teacher interaction.
Intensive and Semi-Intensive Programs Five Days per Week
Students have a choice o participating in NESEs Intensive Program rom 9:00 to 3:15 each day or in NESESemi-Intensive Program rom 9:00 to 12:30 each day. Both programs oer 10 levels o language and culture
training, ull access to all NESE acilities, and a choice o either dormitory or homestay accommodation.
Elective and Ater-School CoursesIn addition to our Intensive and Semi-Intensive classes, students can choose Elective and Ater-School Course
to help them reach their goals more rapidly. Elective and Ater-School Courses include TOEFL Preparation
GMAT Preparation, Business English, Legal English, Workplace Communication, Pronunciation, and
University Preparation. NESEs advanced students can also take extra courses in their area o particular
interest at Harvard Extension School and at other area colleges. Please know each college has its own specic

Our intensive curriculum is specially designed to help students achieve their academic goals as rapidly as
possible. In addition to our intensive classes, we oer a TOEFL Preparation course, the Institutional TOEFL
exam each month, a University Preparation course, and a GMAT Preparation course. We also oer extensive

Recognition by Harvard University Law Schools International Tax ProgramThe International Tax Program at Harvard Universitys Law School has implemented a policy or their
incoming international students. This Harvard program has become a model or education programs in
taxation around the world. In order to be accepted into this program at Harvard, students are required to
have a 580 TOEFL (PBT) score. An exception to this requirement is made by attendance at a top English

heNESECurriculum Intensive or Semi-Intensive Instruction Five Days per WeekThe NESE curriculum is divided into 10 levels o instruction. In each level, you attend classes rom either 9:00
to 3:15 (the Intensive Program) or rom 9:00 to 12:30 (the Semi-Intensive Program) every day. Additionally,
depending on your own goals and needs, you may attend some o the Elective and Ater-School Courses we oer.
Complete Skills Assessment
Whether you take NESEs Intensive or Semi-Intensive Program, when you arrive at NESE, you will be given acomplete assessment to determine your level in all the skill areas. The results o this assessment might indicate
that you need to be placed into a dierent level or each skill, and the NESE curriculum easily accommodate
that possibility. For example, i you can speak better than you can write, you will be placed into a higher leve
or speaking and a lower level or writing. Whichever your skill level, you can be certain that by the time you
complete NESEs most advanced level, you will be able to speak English with the fuency necessary to pursue
your academic and proessional goals successully.
I you arrive at NESE with the minimal knowledge o English, it will take approximately one year to complete
the entire curriculum. I you already have some knowledge o English, we will place you into a level that
ensures that you will learn English in the shortest possible time.
Maximum Exposure to Authentic MaterialsAlthough you are required to have textbooks or classes, and you will be given homework rom them, you
should be prepared or much more! In class, you will read newspapers and magazines, watch videos, roleplay
do exercises in the computer lab, and interview Americans. The NESE curriculum is designed to give you
maximum exposure to authentic materials as soon as possible. The result: you learn English as quickly as
possible.

TOEFL PreparationThis super-intensive course is designed to ensure that you will signicantly increase your score on the iBT
TOEFL exam. In class, you will receive an in-depth skill review, learn test-taking techniques, and take many
practice exams to give you condence when taking the iBT TOEFL
exam. In these classes you will also havean opportunity to concentrate on your own particular mistakes and improve your score. The Institutional
TOEFL exam is oered every month at NESE to all interested intermediate and advanced level students.
Business EnglishIn this intensive course, case studies and current domestic and international business situations are presented.
Through texts, videos, and discussions, you will sharpen and rene your English language and business skills
in areas such as business writing, marketing, strategic planning, nance, international business, and human
resource development. The Harvard Management Update, Business Week, journal articles, and case studies as
well as other current media are used throughout this class. Because NESE maintains special relationships with
a number o MBA programs around the country, NESE students who are academically qualied can enter a
number o these programs without taking the ocial TOEFL exam.
GMAT PreparationThe GMAT, or Graduate Management Admissions Test, is an exam required or admission to most
MBA (Masters o Business Administration) programs as well as some graduate programs in related elds.
NESEs GMAT Preparation Course prepares students or success on each o three sections o the GMAT
(Quantitative, Verbal, and Analytical Writing). This course is one o NESEs Ater-School Courses and takes
place rom 3:30 to 6:30, twice each week.
University PreparationThis course will teach you how to prepare research and technical papers, theses, and dissertations to a
standard expected by United States universities. You will learn how to use an American university library or
research purposes, and these skills will help you complete your class assignment: a research paper complete
with ootnotes and bibliography.
PronunciationThis course is designed to give you extra practice and more sel-condence in conversations in both ormal
and inormal situations. A special emphasis is placed on the needs o each individual in the group.
Legal EnglishIn this course, you will be introduced to the American judicial and legislative systems. You will become
amiliar with legal terminology, learn how to analyze cases, and also understand how legal documents are

NESE University AdvisorA counselor in American university admissions will work closely with you to help you understand the

Meeting with University Admissions StaUniversity admissions ocers are always interested in visiting NESE to meet with students and answer their
questions. As a result, NESE conducts university airs three times a year, providing an ideal opportunity or

University Resource LibraryA resource library ull o hundreds o current university catalogs and guides and a large computer database
about applying to American colleges is available or your use at all times. In addition, you will nd many
guides and practice tests or standardized exams such as GMAT, GRE, SAT, and LSAT.
Admission to University without TOEFL
NESE has special relationships with a number o universities and colleges in the Boston area and across the
United States. These relationships make it possible or NESE students to apply and be accepted to a college or
university without taking the ocial TOEFL exam (and in some cases without taking the SAT or GMAT).
Depending on the individual university or college, there are two ways in which NESE students can replace
the ocial TOEFL exam. Student can either:

Complete NESEs highest level (or the NESE level required by the university or college o your choice)or
u Receive a required score on NESEs Institutional TOEFL
NESE students have continued their studies at many area universities such as Harvard University (adjacent
to NESE), MIT (2 kilometers rom NESE), Boston University (4 kilometers rom NESE), Northeastern
University (4 kilometers rom NESE), and Suolk University (4 kilometers rom NESE), as well as universities
throughout the United States such as the University o Caliornia/Berkley (San Francisco), RISD (Rhode

Use o the MIT Fitness CenterNESE has made special arrangements or its students to use the Fitness Center at MIT (Massachusetts Institute
o Technology), one o the most amous universities in the United States. Located only one subway stop rom
NESE (and a short walk rom Green Hall), the MIT Fitness Center oers a 50-meter swimming pool, personal
training, and a wide range o events and activities. Students can use the Nautilus machines, take aerobic
classes, and play basketball and soccer. MIT Fitness Center members can also arrange to take CPR and rst
aid classes. Students must have a NESE ID card to use the MIT Fitness Center and an extra ee is required.

Anna Shine, Ed.M., Harvard University
President o NESEAnna Shine, a successul and popular educator, holds a Masters degree in Education rom Harvard University
and a Bachelors degree in Psychology rom the University o Michigan. Her experience includes teaching anddirecting English language programs in both the United States and Europe. She also developed and directed
the English language program at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ms. Shine is British but she has lived in the United States (Hawaii, Kentucky, Michigan, New York
Massachusetts), Europe (Germany, France, England, Scotland, Wales), South America (Argentina and
Brazil), and the South Atlantic Ocean (St. Helena) during the past 30 years. As a result, she is particularly
sensitive to the problems, both linguistic and cultural, that a oreigner may have. And she knows personally
why it is so important to understand a culture to learn its language.
Ms. Shine brings to NESE a commitment to maintain the best possible learning environment: one that is
