Roosevelt Takes Charge FDR runs for president in 1932-

promised: “A new deal for the American

People.”

Many voters supported plan: Election of 1932 Roosevelt won

most of the votes in 42 of 48 states

Landslide victory

Taking Office Took office in March `33 on a gray day:

Cloudy sky seemed to capture the feelings of the country

FDR’s first speech as president gave Americans new hope: Carried over the radio “The only thing we have to fear is

fear itself.” Helped Americans feel that problems

caused by the GD could be solved: Plan became known as the 3 R’s

Roosevelt’s Plan3 R’s

1. Relief: give help immediately to jobless workers who were in need.

2. Recovery: give help to banks, businesses, farmers, and workers to recover from the GD.

3. Reform: make long-term changes in the economy so that a depression would never happen again.

The Brain Trust FDR asked many men and women (experts

in certain areas) to put his plans into action: College teachers Experts on the economy People who had worked with the poor

FDR chose Francis Perkins to join his cabinet: For many years Perkins found ways to

help people who were out of work She also worked for child labor reform Became secretary of labor:

The Hundred Days 5 days after FDR became president:

Called a special meeting of Congress President and Congress began to

work on his plan for the nation

FDR wanted to explain his plans to the people ASAP: March 12, 1933:

The Hundred Days cont. FDR and Congress began working

together to end the GD: Congress passed many laws The period during which these

bills were passed was from March 9 to June 16: Called the 100 days
