This project will provide you with the opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained in this course so far. You will create a booklet that illustrates and enacts the ideas of a chosen article, story, or other piece of literature while staying true to the content and communicating the message to a preselected audience.

The challenge of this project is to combine word and image to strike a balance between typographic legibility and the need for self-expression, without copying a style.

Estimated Time: Each section will take 7 – 10 hours to complete. You are encouraged to spend as much time as necessary to explore multiple solutions to this problem. Stay away from solutions that feel natural to you. Challenge yourself.

OBJECTIVEPart 1 (Unit 5)You will select an article, story, or other form of literature to use for the content of this booklet. The text you choose must clearly state a point of view. You MUST request written permission from the author to use his or her work for this project. The only way around this is to write your own literature.

Read and analyze the text, making sure that you really understand it. Outline it and think about its hierarchy of ideas. Before sketching the thumbnails, research experimental design. Look for inspiration and for ideas. Do not look for styles to copy.

You can choose the size and format, but consider several formats before you decide. This piece should have at least four panels. Imagery can be used as long as it is original work. Do not base your design on the imagery. The message is the most important element.

Part 2 (Unit 6)You will post thumbnails of at least three concepts for this project. Include grid developments and a list of the key elements you have chosen to emphasize (hierarchy). You will provide comments and feedback for three other postings. Thumbnails need to be to scale.

Part 3 (Unit 7)Based on feedback provided in the previous discussion, select one concept and proceed to rough stages. Post the roughs for all the pages. Your postings should include a clear description of the proposed design. Discuss the final format, materials, special papers, and/or type of binding techniques. Explain your choices. Provide comments and feedback for three other postings.

Part 4 (Unit 8)Finalize your design. Post the final piece to the unit discussion. Comment on three other designs.

When I begun this course I had just found I was pregnant with my third child and just before this project was assigned I learned I miscarried for a third time. It seemed very fitting for me to use words I wrote myself during the entire month of October as I overcame such a tough time in my life. Through out the experience I blogged as a way to express the trying moments I was experiencing but also as a way to keep our family and friends updated through a miscarriage, 3 surgeries and a return to the hospital where I was admitted due to an infection from the surgeries. It was an overwhelming month filled with many emotions and frustrations. The words would be used in conjunction with photography I had taken throughout the month to help tell my story of “The Neverending Miscarriage”.

The most inspiring examples I ran across while doing research used ink washes with type. I enjoyed seeing hand rendered versions of type as well as typographic illustrations.

To meet the four panel requirement I sketched out a few ideas for folding cards, booklets, and books. Knowing the amount of content I hoped to include in this project I felt the book would be the most appropriate choice. It would leave me with less restraints from including all the text written in October.

As a part of the process several ink washes were created to help create a sense of mood for the backgrounds of some of the project.

Originally I had hoped to handrender the entire book. Some type was constructed on the computer, printed, and then I transferred the type and inked it to have it composed in my layout similar to what I had envisioned. Some type was written “freehand” in my own writing. My goal was to have a more freeflowing, original and authentic look that helped established the mood typographically.

I began the book by hand rendering the type in a way that would help draw attention to some of the impactful things written. This process was incredibly time consuming and as I went along I found that some pages, especially those that had black backgrounds benefitted from hand rendering the type using a wacom tablet. Imagery helped convey the emotional impact made by the typography.

As I continued to hand render type both by hand and using the wacom I felt it gave the pages a more original and personal touch. Some type was composed on the computer first and then hand rendered. Other type was freely created by hand to give a more original appearance. I continued to use imagery that related to the words written. Illustrations were added where they complimented the message.

As I continued I began to compromised my composition due to the time constraints. More of the type was computer generated, though in some cases I still hand rendered key phrases and words to draw attention and give the words a more personal touch. As I added photos I created unique hand rendered frames and illustrative ways to include them so that they seemed thoughtfully placed onto the page.

As the pages were designed I used photos that were taken while writing the things in the book. So often times the imagery helped make the impact the typography made in writing more powerful. In some cases I framed imagery illustratively, in other cases I faded the imagery into the page to set the background and mood for the spread. Key words were brought out to draw attention to key words.

I waited until the very end to create the cover for the book. Honestly, coming up with the title for this project was one of the toughest parts. In the end, I felt “The Neverending Miscarriage” was fitting given the circumstances I went through. Not only was it a tremendous loss but it was one that truly felt as though it was never going to end. In time I hope to finish this book to include the events that followed my initial discovery of this miscarriage.

Once I completed the book I sent it to www.blurb.com to be printed professionally. In only a few days I’ve received an amazing response and have learned that hundreds have previewed the book. I’ve even had a few who have informed me they were planning to purchase a copy for themselves. It’s amazing for me to see how such personal and trying moments of mine have in turn touched others.

It was very rewarding to receive the final printed book printed by Blurb.com. After spending countless hours on thhis project it became something that would allow me to reflect on the experiences in October that have forever changed my life and me as a person. I photographed a the book along with just a few of the most memorable spread in the book to help you see how the final book turned out.
