To All Malden High School Staff, Students and Administrators:

Hello everyone,

May is one of the most wonderful months in our school community and there are plenty of reasons to be happy and positive as our school year begins the “final lap” of its stretch run. However, as our thoughts may catch us looking ahead to summer break, we all realize that there is plenty of work left to be done for this school year and the Fourth Quarter for the majority of our students in the ranks of the underclassmen. There is also a full slate of Final Exams for our graduating Class of 2018 Seniors this week, as they complete their academic obligations as Malden High School students, on the road to Graduation Day. Friday was the last official day of classes for our seniors and the final day was capped by the traditional Red Carpet extravaganza right here at Malden High School, followed by a splendid evening of dining and dancing for nearly 500 guests at the Boston Park Plaza for our Senior Prom. I would like to personally thank everyone who played a role in this terrific evening, administrators, faculty and staff. I continue to be amazed and truly grateful to all of you for the many ways you show our students how much you care about them and effort you continually make to nurture and mentor them, each and every day.

Mr. Mastrangelo - Principal

Plenty of reasons to be happy on this Monday in May; Our Senior Class of 2018 surely tops our list

‘PHOTO of the YEAR’ Contender: Title is… ‘Traveling is Hard Work’ Check out these Malden High School students during their recent April Vacation tour of Italy, along with their MHS faculty chaperones. It is easy to see that these folks did not spend a lot of their nighttime hours sleeping…. as they nearly totally conked out on the bus while going from one tour site to the next. If you look closely, however, not EVERYONE is catching ZZZZs here. Can you pick her out?

Time: 5:30 - 8:30pm

What is Flexible Spending? OPEN ENROLLMENT for FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS (FSA) CONNECTED TO YOUR HEALTH BENEFITS is until THURSDAY, MAY 31

Flexible Spending Account plans are a tremendous opportunity for you to enhance your health benefits package. Your employer is aware thatthese are highly beneficial programs and wants all of its employees to have the opportunity to participate in an IRS Section 125/Flexible. Most employees pay for dependent care and health care expenses on an after tax basis. Flex programs allow you to set aside a portion of your paycheck tax free to pay for these eligible expenses. The result is a reduction in your taxable income, which will give you an increase in your take home pay. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to save an average of 30%, depending on your tax status!

Health Care Account — Employees may set aside up to $2650 per plan year to pay for out-of-pocket health care/dental expenses for themselves and their family members. Examples include:

• Copays for office visits and prescription drugs

• Health and Dental Deductibles

• Orthodontia and other dental expenses

• Contact Lenses, eye glasses, laser eye surgery

• Visits for Chiropractic Care or Acupuncture

If you or your spouse are ‘contributing’ to a Health Savings Account (HSA), you are NOT ELIGIBLE for the FSA Health Care Account.

Dependent Care Account

Employees can set aside up to $5,000 per plan year to pay for out-of-pocket dependent care expenses for children under the age of 13 or elderly parents. This includes:

• Day Care • Before School Care & After School Care

• Summer Day Camp • Elder Care

Although you can claim dependent care expenses when you file your taxes, in most cases, people are able to save more money this way. Dependent Care participants must complete a Dependent Care Claim Form each new plan year for reimbursement.

Welcome! I'm Max Batista, the systems engineer, and student at Malden High. You are invited to the 2018 Maker Fair.

Maker Fair Tuesday, May 22, 8:40 - 11:15 a.m.

Nedlam's Workshop, basement of Malden High School

Come to the Maker Fair to see what we have made. Ashley Freeman's Creative Design and Engineering class have worked with Tufts, Beth Horwitz's App Inventor class, MIT, and Friends of the Malden River to create projects to make the Malden river more welcoming and to get more people excited about the river. Our goal is to get more people to come to the Malden River in the hopes that they take care of it. We are also displaying projects that other classes have made such as improving the bike path and building little free libraries in partnership with Malden Reads, Malden Arts, and Malden Cultural Council.

These projects were made possible by generous grants from TERC and the Nellie Mae Foundation.

At the same time, the Senior Internship Exhibition will be going on in the Malden High Gymnasium.

Hope to see you there!

MHS GUIDANCE TEAM on GRADING FOR NEW/TRANSFER STUDENTS Hello teachers,

As we approach final grading time, we ask that you please take a moment to check on the grades for any student who has entered your class as a new/transfer student during the year.

As you may know, some students enter with transfer grades while others may have incomplete records when they arrive. School Counselors make every effort to email grades (if they are available) at the time that the student enters for their first day. If you have not received grades, we may need to confirm with you how a student will be graded for the year.

If you have any questions in regard to how you will calculate a final grade for a new/transfer student, please email the student's House Principal and the House Counselor for clarification, at your earliest convenience. We hope that this will prepare us for a smooth final grading process for all. Thank you.

Kind regards,

Susan Lessard and the Guidance Team.
