CHARGES AGAINST REV. C. E. PERRY

Bishop Julius, in his judgment on the charges against the Rev. C. E. Perry, of St. Michael's, Ch.ch., condemns the prosecution on the ground that it was common knowledge that Mr. Perry had been .a.Cfmonished and had agreed to the Bisho.p's ruling. _ _

In regard to 'the c1iarges of frregu a.rity in the celebration of the Sacrament, the Bishop ruled that som~ of the practices complained of w~re authorised, but he forhade others, a.bout which there was some doubt.

The Rev. C. E. Perry, vica.r of St. Michael's, made no a.nswer to the charges laid in the Bishop's Court by Archdeacon Gos.set. It only remamed for Bishop Julius t-0 hear argument hy counsel before coming to his decision. Mr. H. D. AcJ.and a.ppea.red for Archdeacon Gosset and Mr.

. J. H. Upham for Mir. Perry. The charges were fourteen in number, each one

alleging an offence or breach of ecclesiastical duty. · It wa.s stated that Mr. Per.ry lia.d reserved unconsumed portions of the consecrated bread and wine from the Sacra.ment and had ca.used them to be kept in a sped.al italbernacle, where he habitually genu.1ected or pro~trated himself, and caused others to do the same; that he advised a special invqcation of the Blessed Virgin at noon and six o'clo<:k; that he encouraged the idolatrous adoration or worship of the consecrated bread :;tnd wine; that he celebrated a Requiem Mass fo1· a dead person, a.nd enooUJI·.aged kneeling a.nd prostration during the Nicene Creed. Other oh~rges related to the use of illegal ornaments and light<!.

Mr. Upham contended that Mr. Perry was endeavouring, perhaps under a misapprehension, to co!ltinue practices which he had found in Oiooel'IV.anoe when he succeeded Canon H. D. Burton. The Rev. Cecil A. Mallett, C.F. (0. of E.), attd. to the Base Depot in Fmn1Je, lost his life recently in the burning of a hut. He was thirty-seven years of .age a.nd was cumte at Morrinsville. He had been for a ye.a.r with the N.Z.E.F.

Lt. C. R. Nichols, E. Surr. Rgt. (attd. T.M.B.), who is reported killed in action, was son of Col. J. C. Nicholls, C.B.E., O.C. Otag-0 District, and an O.B. of 'Christ's College. He came to Cam­berley for a regular commission early in 1915. 1Ie was wounded in 1917.

Capt. H:. L. Murgatroyd, M.C., Leicester Rgt., at. ~. 1cs.. Fusu son of M~. and Mrs. J. Murgat­royd, HoroI'ata, died M WO\Ul<i:o on Sepheill!Det 27, a rred twenty-three. He got his oommi•sion from tl~e Inns of Court in 1914, and served in Gallipoli and Eaypt before going to the Western front.

The "death occurred at Indianapolis, U.S.A., whille fiying, of Capt. J-0soph J. Harn1mon.d, R.A.F., one -0f the earliest N.Z. aviators. He commenc<Jd fiying w'ith the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and took one of the machines to N.Z. in April, 1915. He was commanding a war station in Scotland last year.
