The official newsletter of the Sisters Of Nazareth African Region since 1883
Dear Sisters, Board Members, Colleagues, Donors and Friends of Nazareth
It is with excitement that I officially announce some exhilarating changes to Nazareth House African Region. Within the next month, Nazareth House will be rebranded as Nazareth Care and will sport a fresh look and feel. The name change allows the organisation to fall in line with our global operations which has been operating under the
banner of Nazareth Care for many years. We believe the updated look will serve to reinvigorate our beloved organisation and that the change is conducive in reflecting the wide scope of services and unique person-centred care we offer.
Although the Nazareth Care branding will look different, the core values by which we have been operating for the last 150 years under the Sisters of Nazareth remain in place; namely love, justice, hospitality, respect, compassion and patience. We will continue to support and uplift the most vulnerable members of our community.
This month I would like to commend and thank all the families, friends and loved ones of each resident. Your participation and continued support is paramount in the daily enhancement and joy of each resident.
We strive to ensure that all our facilities are not just a place of refuge or care but a home, and that all relatives and friends
are part of our large and active family.
It must be noted that there are residents without family and friends, whereby all our staff try and fill that gap as best we
can. All volunteers, companions and staff play an important role in ensuring the best quality of life for each person. We salute you and thank you for your kindness, compassion and willingness to make a difference in someone's life.
One of my aims for this year is to try to do something good for someone each day. Try it, you will be surprised how a small gesture and acknowledgment of a person will make their day, and yours.
Best wishes

I A message from Sister Anne Margaret Craig Regional Superior Nazareth House African Region
On St Valentine's Day, I always remember a set of tiny twins who were born prematurely
several years ago. After six weeks in the hospital incubators, they were brought into us at
Nazareth House for ongoing care and hopefully with a view to adoption. Born on the
14th of February, the little boy had been given the name Valentino and the girl
Valentina!
Sadly, Valentino (who was the smaller and weaker of the two) battled to gain weight and to thrive. He also had a serious heart defect, and was in and out of hospital several times, finally losing the battle to live at just a few months old. Valentina on the other hand blossomed and grew by the day. She was eventually adopted into a loving family.
Saint Valentine, according to romantic legend, was a kind-hearted Roman priest who
married young couples against the wishes of Emperor Claudius 11, and was beheaded for
his deeds on the 14th of February around the year 270.
My friend Google tells me:
When EWlperor Claudius II decided that siV1.gle WleVI. Wlade better soldiers thaV1. those with wives and faWlilies, he outlawed Wlarriage for young WleV1.. ValeV1.tine, realiz.iV1.g the iV1.justice of the decree, defied Claudius and coV1.tiV1.ued to perforWl Wlarriages for young lovers iV1. secret. WheV1. ValeV1.tiV1.e's actioV\.S were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help
Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured.
Whatever the true story may be, we will never really know, but I am grateful to St
Valentine for helping me each year to have a very special memory of those very special
twins!

This past month, Nazareth House Durban launched Project Hope. It has been a very tough few years for Nazareth House Durban but we are embarking on a journey to bring this beacon back to life.
Project Hope is about not giving up, it's about us standing together to renew, refresh and re-ignite a dream to provide a home for those who can no longer care for themselves.
Reef Caterers spoiled our residents with a special Valentine's Day lunch which was followed by a music concert. Anneline Ball and Sanet Botha performed a piano duet and our residents' choir sang.
